What is your rod finish of choice for the no bubble / no heat effect? I am trying to start my commercial operation on a retiree's budget on and just do not have the startup capital to purchase one of everything to test it myself.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I think I can speak for all "newbies" (and maybe some old hats also) for the numerous ways to skin this cat. God bless each of you.

Thanks for reply. It is seems phenomenal to me that experts following this forum are so willing and so prompt in sending out answers. I hope to be able to share with someone in the near future about something that works for me. I may publish a book titled "What Not To Do In Rod building". I am accumulalting a great deal of knowledge in this area.
Thanks again

I have found much info about bursting bubbles in the rod wrap with an alcohol burner. What distance is the flame positioned below the rod wrapping when bursting bubbles? I know a small flame will be best for me , and I need to start cautiously, but I do not want to ruin a wrap job or blank or not get enough heat to do the desired job.

Several years I built a spinning rod for my wife - she must have a custom rod butt because of physical difficulties.
Included in the St. Croix kit I bought was the manufactured handle and a tapered plug apparently for covering the hole in the butt ring.
Question 1 - How do you trim this plug to fit the handle after the handle is installed on the rod? The rod will extend to within 1/16"

Thanks for rapid feedback from all you guys.
I will continue to look for something other than RIT. For anything to work on cork, it seems as if the rings must be turned as a handle unit and then dye the rings & glue them together. This will be a time consuming process, but it might help sell more of the custom rods to the ladies anyway.
Side note - I discovered years ago that if want

The FlexCoat video shows their "hot glue" stick to be the cat's meow for attaching guides to the blank instead of using masking tape.
Anyone used this prodluct?

I have been "dabbling" with building rods for nearly 40 years - started with a Herter's kit. However, it is never too late to look into something new. I would like to find a supplier for protective inserts for fishing rod racks made from wood. I have looked at teh internet until I am nearly crosseyed. Now is the time to yell for help.
Can anyone give me the name of a supplier where

I will soon be turning a handle grip made from EVA. This is my first attempt at making a grip using good materials and tools. I will be turning a 2 X 2 X 12 block of EVA into a straight spinning rod handle
1: The MudHole material I have located says to coat the mandrel with Steel Turning Mandrel Wax at $10.00. This sounds a lot like applying release compound on a rifle action before epoxy be

I must rebuild the handle on my wife's ultralite spinning rod. She must have a 10-11 inch handle behind the reel seat because of some physical limitations. She wants a foam handle instead of cork if possible.
The rod measures 9/32-inch OD approx. 1 1/4-inch in front of the cucrrent handle. I am assuming I need 1/4-inch ID material for the handle.
I have been unable to locate any EVA or Hapal
