I had also heard that Robert Redford offered to give Bob Taylor credit on the movie if he was given a rod. Bob replied, "Nope, you have plenty of money and you can pay me my asking price if you want a rod." Robert Redford did just that!

Herb, Take a look at the FishHawk #212 3/0 Natural silk for transparent wraps. A lot of guys use white for transparent wraps but I have learned from hanging out with the bamboo builders that they prefer the #212 natural silk.

Take a look at Hopkins and Holloway. They maintain a nice inventory of rod whipping thread and other components dedicated to rodbuilding.

Bill, I have a Batson 10' 9" 8wt, 4 piece RX7 switch blank that I use for the same purpose and it is wonderful. I took it Steelheading two weeks ago and used it for redfishing this week. You can add a fighting butt which can also allow you the opportunity to two hand or spey cast. It can act as a fly rod or "spey" rod. I am a big fan of this switch style concept.

Ken, NCP thread has chalk in the dye. Nylon thread is translucent therefore light can pass through it and affect the color. The introduction of chalk in the dye bath keeps light from passing through therefore "no color preserver (NCP)" is required. The chalk will give the thread a pastel or dull appearance. Regular nylon will be much brighter but CP is recommended in order to maintain

Bill, I believe you are looking for a Rice made product but it is no longer made. It was slightly smaller than "A". It was made with three stands but gave the appearance of two strands. Versitex might be a good option for you to hunt this material!

Mike, I know that Madeira uses a poly core but I am not sure what type of metal foil they use.

Ron, The FishHawk metallic thread is made with a silver alloy, therefore, it will not tarnish or lose it`s luster. It is not made with aluminum film. This silver alloy is laminated to a carrier film and then placed over a nylon core. The nylon core is wrapped in rice paper to prevent fraying and delamination when the thread is stretched.

There is a difference between rod building nylon and regular nylon and I will give an example from which I have had personal experience. Rice at one time offered rod winding nylon. This was a thread that was designed and twisted for embroidery applications but there was no silicone used in the dye bath so it became compatible for rod building. FishHawk produces a nylon thread which is twisted e

I have a 8 wt and 9 wt fly rod made of silk only thread. These rods have seen their fair share of steelhead, redfish, etc action with no issue. Silk is one of the strongest natural fibers in the world and can hold up to many tasks although I have never heard of using it on a 12 wt rod! It breaks easier than nylon since it has no stretch but once wrapped, it is plenty strong. Redrocks has been a

Ken,I have an old surf rod which is similar in description but not identical. My rod is a 12' Berkley Pro Fisher. I ill be happy to forward you photos of the wraps and label if you think it is a possible match. I am guessing this rod is also 30 yrs old.

FishHawk offers nylon thread made, dyed, twisted, and wound in the US (The Carolina`s). This has been the case for almost 14 years. NAFTA has impacted the embroidery and finished goods market but not the rod building thread market. 80% of of the rod building thread market is black thread. It is very difficult for any dedicated rod market thread producer to effectively supply the custom market wit

I am getting ready to start building some of my first rods and want to focus on travel flyrods....3-4 pieces. I have all of my components picked out except for the blanks. In your opinion what is a nice 3-4 piece blank for 3-5 wt travel fly rod?? I also plan to move up to 8-12 wt rod very soon and would like opinions on those blanks as well. I prefer fast action blanks. Thanks!!

Bill, Take a look at these two options...1) Silk Sparkle from FishHawk. It is two strands (not three) and it is made by twisting 3/0 silk with a very fine strand of metallic. It might do well with Micros and will be slightly smaller than size "A" thread. 2) Rice made a three strand classic twist in an "A" and I have had some folks describe it as slightly smaller then "A&

Properly twisted nylon is definitely stronger. However, pure silk when twisted correctly can be stronger then some nylons made exclusively for embroidery applications.

In my opinion I like silk with the right blank ( you will most likely see the blank below the thread with silk so chose a pretty blank!!). However, nylon is used more and most people will tend to use nylon because it is easier to wrap. Since silk has no stretch, it can break if you are not careful. Nylon can be a little more forgiving. I would recommend wrapping with both on a test blank and expe

Frank, I hope this helps... In regard to sizing comparisons....Silk 50 = "A", Silk 100 = 3/0....which is also half the diameter of "A". Many bamboo fly rod builders prefer 3/0 as it is ideal for translucent wraps. A properly thinned finish will allow the silk to "melt into" the blank. Silk is the strongest natural fiber in the world and when properly twisted, it ser

Frank, Last week I fished with a fly rod with a wood grip (Chestnut) for the first time and I loved it. Tom`s account for increased control and greater efficiency are dead on. I had never fished with such a handle but am now a believer that a wood or rattan grip provide superior performance plus look wonderful. You will end up with a high performance piece of art!!

I am almost certain this is a Rice thread. Rice is one of the oldest thread producers in the US and did supply Herter`s...some of the old boxes still exist! This green/black classic twist was still produced until around 2004-5 and was run in an "A" and a "D". Rice supplied rod winding threads in A - EE. If this thread was not produced by Rice then it was produced by an English

Thankfully, I feel like an adopted son of Mary Lou`s. The postman delivered today a custom fly rod from MLV with a bag of fresh coffee from Montana! She is a wonderful friend and a talented rod builder. You should all be so lucky to see her work in person...and rumor has it that she will attend her first ICRBE in 2011!

Nylon threads can come in several forms...1) basic nylon twisted for sewing applications with silicone ( silicone aids in processing through machines), 2) basic nylon twisted for sewing applications with no silicone ( this material is sold for rod winding applications...think Rice), 3) nylon twisted exclusively for rod winding applications with no silicone...think FishHawk. This style of thread

Reflections was once provided to the market as a quilting thread but did not do well and was being discontinued. We decided to reintroduce it in Feb as a rodbuilding thread as it is made in the same manner as our metallic threads. The only difference is that we use an iridescent film instead of a metallic film. We offer this thread in seven colors and you can also purchase it in assortment tubes.

Rohit, Reflections is so new that the distributors might not have it on their site yet. They can all get it for you. I also failed to mention Custom Tackle as a FishHawk distributor. I know that they and Fishsticks have some in stock unless they sold out at the ICBRE in High Point.

Rohit, YLI and FishHawk Threads are one and the same but operate as two different business units. Reflections is a new product which was introduced to rodbuilders at the Expo in HighPoint. The following sponsers carry FishHawk Threads...@#$%&, Bingham Enterprises, Dons Tackle, Fishsticks, Hook and Hackle, and Versitex. Thank you for the interest and supporting our fine distributors!!
