Yesterday I bought a Seeker B S-706 EXS which is a spinning blank. Next to it was a BC-706 EXS casting blank. Now I was thinking if I was to build a spiral/acid rod would I want to use the spinning blank or the casting blank? I know the casting blank is stiffer but since it would a spiral it would be more like a spinning rod! Would you just pick if you had to choose the better feeling blank? Or a

One thing I like to mention becareful if you strip a blank and scuff or sand with steel wool. The steel can inbed it self in to the fiberglass if your down to the bare blank. You won't notice it really until you add a clear finish.

This question is like the wrap a ferrule question. I don't use them because of the added weight and wonder at times if I should! I think if your guides are preped right you don't need them. I haven't had a problem not using them... Yet! I'm going to use them on my tuna Strokers though.

I don't think there would be any reason to do it on a conventional rod or a way to. I would say the Concept is to spinning rods what a spiral wrap is to a conventional rod. BTW if you have never built a rod using the concept you will like it. I built one kind of thinking "It's not going to make a difference" I was wrong! The rod....... can't say casts farther (Surf rod ) but casts smoo

I to have used Duplicolor and have had very good luck. I have asked Duplicolor about flex agents in the rattle can and they said that the formula used in the spray can can be used on plastic bumpers. I have not had this paint crack on me yet! The only thing is the limited colors!

It might be cheaper to build all new blanks but... If the rods are what you like you might not find another like it easily.

Just built one in a spiral last month. I used HNSG on it but for a heavy set up you might want to use LRSG. Also the HBSG or BHBNG if you want chrome. All would work fine. These are great rods with great actions one of my favorites.

Your going to have to coat the painted section with a clear coat of some kind I would think . I would use a airbrush to apply the paint to help with thin coats.

Not being a Rod expert but I have used auto touch up with success and regular oil type enamals also work. For what your doing it sounds like you want to blend a color in, I would get a bunch of model builders enamals in colors close and maybe other colors to mix a small batch and see if you can match it before you paint the blank. The auto type sprays can be wet sanded and blended in pretty good

Ok! Thanks guys! I'll change out the 12s for all 10s. This rod is for plugging and I really don't use a large leader(5ft on this rod) that passes through the guides although I like to have the option which is why I use larger guides. Most of my bait rods have 16's or 12s due to the long leader which I use on my soaking rods. Chris I'm with you on the weight thing that's one reason I started bui

In Toms book he says when using the Fugi guide concept that from the choke guide to tip use the same size guide. Question is, Will it hurt to change down one size? On one surf rod I'm building I'm going from 12 size choke,12,12,to 10, 10 ,10, tip 10. I have test casted yesterday and all seems fine. I figured he had a reason for saying so in the book . Should I just switch the 12's out for 10s??

Intresting, Because I just saw Sulky thread at a craft store and was wondering if it to was a lubricated type of thread. I know some use this thread but I never have. The alcohol wipe method for the Maderia sounds like a bother.

Check out the Fuji Concept guide system. I will start with say a 40 high frame, 30, 25 or 20, to a 16 or 12 and continue the same size all way to the tip. The 16 or 12 are called the choke guide. The 16 or 12 will depend on whether I will pass a knot through the guides. A 16 will pass easier but 12 work as well with a small knot. If you can get it try to find Tom Kirklman's book "Rod Building

There is a soft like grip tape that is sold for drummers to use on bass drum pedals that sounds like what you want. You might find it at a music store. There also is a thinner tape that is used for drum sticks that is about as wide as electrical tape that would work as a grip material and comes in colors. The names of the products elude me right now but most well stock music stores have it.

Treadline?? Is that a Aussie spinning reel? If so I would say no with most spinning outfits I use I try to stay below a 40 and better yet a 30. Though I use the Concept system which on a 10' surf I'll only use say no more then four front ( gathering )guides all spinning type until I hit my choke guide and then I switch to boat style guides of no more then a 16 ring and mostly 12ring. I have foun

^ what he said above! Get a cannon and shoot the bait out and get a good stiff rod. I didn't think you were looking to throw that much weight. And The sturgeon rods I have used can't cast that weight but can handle a drop and drift type of boat fishing with 10 to 12 oz.

There were a few good choices All Star's Super Surfs or Hawaii Surfs 2 pc if you can find them. Seeker's CSU 2pc British surf blanks which are discontinued but can be found. Also Pacbay/ Sabre E-glass SU138MH-b 1pc rated 3 to 5 oz but can handle a bit more. Versitex has these still. Most blanks rated for Heavy weight are over 11' and are E or S-glass or composites. The Sturgeon blanks are another

I have a Pac Bay XL wrapper and dryer and as I type this I have a rod drying on it. The problem is that when ever I set it to spin on dry after about 20 min The rod comes out of the chuck. It's kind of like the supports kind of thread it out after a while.I'm afraid to leave a rod dry without checking it every 15 mins. It's happened to every rod I have built and I'm wondering if anyone has a solu

I don't think Guberod going out of buisness would do any one any good! They need to get up to speed with their products for sure. Using their HT braid, "which looks great" is the biggest PIA ever. It twists and unspools itself driving me nuts. I also have started useing B thread which is much easier then A to use with my fat fingers! Versitex has some in stock as well!

Not a pro builder and do not sell, But the place I buy my supplies from also builds customs and they say they are doing very well and have for the past few years. As a fisherman and with the price of fuel I pick and choose my time carefully over years before where I would just go no matter the conditions. I beleive many are doing the same. Also it seems a lot of people (like me) Are starting to b

Joseph, I'm with you on that. I'm saying that Seeker fiberglass rods compared to some others that I toyed with seem lighter and have nice actions to them. As for the Super Seekers for jigging and live bait I love them. they are light, powerful, and sensitive. That being said I haven't tried any from ATC or GUSA and have heard great things about them as well. I have used Lami and an old Fenwick g

I to will have to agree that Seeker makes some tuff and usable blanks. I have found that I prefer their E-glass blanks over Lami E-glass. For most boat rods I have built so far the Super Seekers are a great blank! The only problem with Seeker is that they tend to discontinue alot of models and I would like to see them expand on some (surf type).I'm also waiting to see what Harnell comes out with

I have built and used several Super Seeker blanks and all are real nice. SSCJBF65H, SSCJBF70 and H and several other models. Love the action of these rods also feels like you can pull the bottom of the ocean up with them. I want to try a GUSA and ATC blanks as well. They all make nice stuff really!
