Hello, I did a search on the forum, but there were no results on what happens when a blank is shortened. I have read conflicting things about shortening blanks. While all said that shortening a blank will make it slower, I read one post where the blank's ern goes up, and one where it goes down. I can see how it would get slower, but I don't know how it would get more power by being shorter.

Hello, There isn't much data on the CCS about the Lami XMG50 fly blanks...I was wondering what people think about the blank, and what other manufacturer's blanks it is comparable to? Like the GLX or Z-axis blanks? Or is it closer to IMX and XP blanks? How about compared to Dan Craft FT? How about the physical weight of the blank compared to others? I'm thinking about the 9' 7 weight in

Hello, I tried to look at the Lami fly and spin/casting blanks on your site, and the link doesn't display any blanks or prices. Just letting you know. Thanks, Ken

That's because I'm a child of the internet age; I am more inclined to ask those who know more than I do first...if that fails to produce information, THEN I might do it myself...

Hello, I have been doing some tournament casting, and one of the events is called 5/8ths plug accuracy, where you use baitcasters and most use a blank made specifically for this event made by G. Loomis. However, they do not recommend fishing with this blank, as it was not built for that use, and may fail. See: I really like this blank, and want to build a rod that is as close as

Hello, I was wondering what experiences people have had with different fiberglass fly rod blanks. I am considering either a Thomas and Thomas Heirloom or a Lamiglass Fiberglass blank in a three weight. The Thomas and Thomas costs more than 3x as the Lamiglass ($92.34 vs $310). Thanks, Ken

Thanks for the reply, This is for a fly rod. I was hoping to keep the color of the silk, which is why I asked about the CP. Thanks, Ken

Hello, I was just wondering about the pros and cons of silk vs nylon when wrapping a rod. Which is stronger? Which one lasts longer? Can you use flex coat on silk, or do you need another material/mixture? Do you need to use color preserver? If you do need to use color preserver, is there color preserver made just for silk, or will the stuff for nylon work just as well? Is the

Hello, I have been able to find the guide spacing for Loomis and Sage, but I can't find it for the Winston blanks. If anyone knows where I can find it, I would appreciate it. (I have emailed the company, but since it's the holidays, they're not open). Thanks, Ken

Thanks for the link, but that still does not show the weights for either the GLX or the IMX blanks...which is what I was looking for. I also prefer rods that fit my casting stroke, which is why I'm building another rod. I don't fish with 100ft of line out, in fact very rarely is there more than 40ft of line out with the 4wt or 6wt when I'm fishing, someday I might fish that far with my 8wt,

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had the weight in ounces of a few different fly blanks. I've looked around, but I can't seem to find it anywhere (on either the manufacturer's or retailer's sites). I would appreciate any information you could provide. I'm thinking of building a 9ft 5wt. I built a Rainshadow RX8 9ft 4pc 5wt, the blank is supposed to be 2 ounces, and when I finished it, it

Hello, I was wondering what size the guides are on rods like the Sage TXL series, and where are they available? Thanks, Ken

So, on my first rod, I had a little blunder involving drying flex coat and a synthetic fleece sweater...on the area where the logo of the rod maker's name, so there is a lot of flex coat and no wraps in that area. I tried to burn off the little fibers that got stuck, and ended up scorching the flex coat somewhat before the flex coat had a chance to set, but couldn't think of a way to remove it w

I spoke with a local fly casting competitor who builds his own rods, and he said that he never uses snake guides on his distance casting rods, because when he competes with the shooting heads with mono running line, the snake guides allow the mono to slip between the two feet and cause extra friction that he feels reduces distance. He said that on accuracy and fishing rods, he sees no difference

Hello, I was wondering which people prefer and why? I understand that for lightness, the single foot guides are better, but the salesman at a rod building shop told me that the snake guides in larger sizes are better for casting, as they prevent the line from hitting the blank when casting. He said because the single foot guides are lower that the line will rub on the wraps and slow the li

Hello, If I decided that I wanted to change the grip and reel seat on a factory rod, what is the best way to go about doing this? Is it even advisable? Thanks, Ken

Hello, I am interested in building a 2wt. I'm thinking around 8 feet long, give or take a few inches. At least 3 pieces. I really like my 9' 4wt Winston BIIx, so I guess that I'd like a rod with a similar action and feel, except they don't make a 2wt in that series. I also tried casting a Sage TXL 7'10" 2wt and a Scott G2 7'7" 2wt, both of which were nice to cast, but I'd like
