Thanks Ron. Cheng, what do you use to remove the epoxy without spreading it around on the blank or disturbing the epoxy on the wrap? Bill, I only have a 6rpm dryer...do you use a special tool or just a brush/mixing stick? Thanks, Ken

I know wraps need to be sealed completely to ensure that they are protected. However, this picture: looks better than this: to me...is the first completely sealed? It almost seems like it could allow moisture in...while the second picture seems to be completely sealed...but on bare graphite, I think the first method would look better...how does one seal the wrap without that slope of epoxy/fi

Anyone build a fly rod with single foot wire guides, who also uses the Sharkskin line? Have you noticed any wear on the wraps and whatever product you use to coat the wraps? Thanks.

I love my 9' 4wt Winston B2x...it's very fast, yet very soft...though I find that once you get proficient at casting, you can adjust your stroke to fit any actioned rod...it really is personal preference...I've cast 113' with a Winston B2mx...but I don't fish that far out...so I fish with a 9' scott G2 5 wt if I need a 5 wt...what random strangers on the Internet say shouldn't affect your likes/d

Mudhole said those blanks are/will be special order...bingham says they won't have them for a while, and don't know the prices yet... Are these blanks the IM material? Any estimate on prices/delivery to dealers?

Depends on your casting stroke and what you want the rod to do...all of these rods will cast a 5 weight line...but where it feels best for you will be different for you than it will for me... I actually built a RX8+ a year ago...I had a factory Sage Z-Axis 6 weight rod at the time, and the 5 weight RX8+ was heavier in physical weight than the 6 weight Sage, and it just didn't feel right for me

Thanks guys for your impressions...I ordered a 7wt FR3PA from Mudhole at the 20% discount, and I got it today...it is very straight, straighter than any other blank I've built on...the tip has a spline, but it does not have a "dominant" spline for lack of a better word...there are two directions it will jump to, but it doesn't favor one side to the other...the middle section doesn't app

Wow...I ask a simple question, one which I was not able to find when I searched for the answer using the product I am asking about, and I got two helpful responses, Chad, who showed me where I could find related information, and Tom, who gave me the answer I was looking for... The rest of you were not helpful...just saying, "look harder", "search better", or reiterating inf

I did read the link that was provided...and prior to my post, searching for "flex coat weight" resulted in nothing...I don't use threadmaster...and did not search for "threadmaster weight", so I did not find that thread... I always do a search before I ask a question, but I cannot control the results I get, or the fact that content I am looking for might be under a differen

Hey, Does anyone know if the hardener and the resin in flex coat light weigh the same? If so, why not get an accurate scale, and measure out the amount of flex coat based not on volume, but on weight...this would be much more accurate than eyeing the volume with the syringes...but, if the two parts don't weigh the same, I suppose this wouldn't work...

Thanks for all the advice and info! So will a new, extremely thin coat of lite build solve the tackiness issue, or will I just need to rewrap? Thanks, Ken
Forum: rodboard

Ken Tong
So I followed the mixing instructions on the box for the lite build flexcoat, and mixed thoroughly...put a saturating coat on the wraps...used a brush to remove the excess after coating all wraps...the rod is a split grip there are winding checks that I wrapped against each grip...and those were the two wraps I started coating...those two wraps are tacky to the touch...the wraps and logo sticker

The 5" spacing was what I started out with...once the rod was under load, I moved the guides...and that was what I ended up with...

I had the rod loaded from the tip with a little baggy of quarters for weight, it hung from a section of line and a hook attached to the tip. Then I ran the line I wanted to use through the guides, with a little weight on the end to keep the line taut, but not a lot of weight.

So I'm still working on my 6' ultralight spinning rod. In the course of using the Static Guide Placement method, along with the New Guide Concept, I ended up putting 8 guides on the rod in order to get the line to follow the blank's curve under load. There was more moving of guides than I expected. Also, in one area, the distance between guides shrank. The first guide from the tip is 4"

So I'm using a Rainshadow SP720-4, a nice little 6' 4 piece ultralight blank, and I wanted to use the 4lb test braids (not 4lb diameter braids), which are really thin, because it's easier to cast the very light lures with thinner line. I was hoping to use wire guides, as they are the lightest, and I understand the lighter the rod the better. I have heard of grooving wire guides, and was hoping

Hello, I was wondering which guide do you think experiences the most friction when the line runs along the guides? This is in reference to an ultra-light spinning rod. Intuitively, I'd say the tip guide would get the most friction, though I could be wrong. If that is the case, would it make sense to use an SiC tip, and lighter guides on the rest of the rod, as the SiC's are much heavier than

Hello, So I bought this blank, and went online to find the spacing for it. The G.Loomis site no longer has their guide spacing charts listed; I got an error message when I searched that website. I emailed their customer service last week, and have not gotten any response. I used the search feature on this website for relevant information before making this request, but got no results from t

I was reading on another forum where a guy bought a 9' 6 weight 4 piece, and just left the butt section off to make a shorter rod, and claimed it was now a 7'6" 8 weight...that was what was confusing me. Is there any validity to this claim? Thanks, Ken
