31. Re: sally hansen
Sally Hansen 'hard as nails is IMO the best head cement out there. BUT, it thins with acetone and I don't want acetone on/near my rods/blanks.

More information first. Thin budget. I,ve heard that (answer[?]) too often. Thanks, Bobby, you posted while I was writing.

Thank you, Buddy. I agree. I, too, believe the benefits outweigh the slight added effort. I have a pet peeve concerning "quicker better, easier better", when it affects quality. "I can't walk a block or two, I must drive/be driven". I even wrap by hand, by prefernce.

I 've used nothing smaller than #6 running guides so far but this sounds interesting. For #10 and heavier monofilament I use #7 or #8 running guides and tip ring to get the best casting distance. I can see using these tiny guides for #2 or #4 lb. mono, maybe #6, but isn't there a point of diminishing return on guide size? I know the small hole in the front of a push button (spincast) reel is an e

Harold, it reads like you are putting too much finish on those longer sections of wrap. perhaps if you stop the dryer with the guides up and remove what excess finish gathers underneath and then resume turning the rod. Some call this wicking off the excess.

The Rainforest spin blanks #RF2SP600 & #RF2SP601 are as close as I know of to what you want. Both are 1pc. and you could trim the butt to get under 5ft. I built the #RF2SP600 as a fly/spin combination rod for Bluelining, and with #2 Stren and/or a 2wt. line this rod Rocks! The 601 will probably be more to your liking, me being an ultra-light fanatic. I used Alconite, a #20 & #12 BYAG &

It's too new to know yet. But, like almost all techniques this should get easier with practice. I've read the article in Rodmaker (thrice) and most everything else on these foam grips and I believe we (rodbuilders) have a winner. Whether or not more work is involved probably remains to be seen. Tom, you type faster than I do.

I just tell my customers to bring me the reel they will use on the rod I'm building. This takes all the hassle out of it.

I have the Flex Coat SW-1 wrapper which has a rail down the center for the supports & thread carriage. I eyeball the guide alignment to tape & wrap, then, after wrapping the guides I line up the rod and my good eye with the shiny spot on the wall where the ceiling light is reflected. Now I adjust each guide so it lines up with the tip and butt guides. Holding the rod at a slight angle to

I love ultra-light spinning and light/ultra-light fly fishing. I recently built this blank as a spinning rod for Bluegill for a friend and have an extra blank, I bought two. I have a matched pair of Matrix 6' 6" 2wt., one fly one spinning. The spinning built 6' 6" rod is a great bream rod! So is the fly rod. I prefer slow to moderate action rods for myself.

Has anyone built this 5ft. 1pc. blank as a fly rod? How does it perform?

I don't know if this will help, but the wheels on my Flex-Coat SW1 wrapper are 2 1/2 in. in diameter. I bought mine at Custom Tackle Supply, on the left. I hope this helps.

How does this 'spider thread' compare with Pearsalls gossamer(6/0) & naples(4/0) silk thread?

49. Re: warped cork
I bought 31 grips that way. At a yard sale for $20. with a few other rod repair goodies in the same box. They are casting/spinning butt grips 7in. to 8in. long, pre-shaped with a 3/8in, inside diameter. When I got this treasure home I discovered that most of these grips are as crooked as W.C.Fields' pool cue. Crooked enough that normal reaming, hand or power, leaves the cork grip almost as crooke

I recently purchased several 7 & 8in. casting butt grips for making repairs on bass rods. I want to find an easy way to straighten these grips to make reaming work right. I haven't used pre-made grips, except in repairs, for a while and I don't remember finding this problem before. I reamed one of these grips the normal way and installed it on a repair and the grip looked like a snake cra

I drill out the rings to the size mandrel just smaller than the blank. Then I sand the flats of the rings smooth with 220 grit paper. I wax the correct size mandrel and thinly epoxy the rings on until the grip is complete, then clamp tightly to compress enough to press out as much epoxy as possible, about an 1/8th to 1/4 inch for a 7 1/2 fly grip, wipe with an alcohol dampened paper towel & s

I've been a satisfied customer of Custom Tackle Supply for years now. Any problems were taken care of immediately, but there have been few. The years of excellent service have proven Custom Tackle supply and Bob to be one of the best.

Use a Forhan locking wrap and place the guide as close as possible to the end of the tip. When you add finish coat the tip of the blank too.

Jason, I drill out the cork rings with the largest size drill bit that is just smaller than the blank and epoxy the rings together on that size mandrel and compress them untill cured. Then I hand ream to fit the blank. For arbors I drill them out the same way and, again, hand ream to fit. When you speed up you make errors and the product, in this case a custom rod, is NOT as well made as it is i

I just hand ream the grip very carefully. I also like reaming a shorter section if the grip is longer than 10 inches or so. Welcome.

The formula for the approximate maximum casting weight is: the fly rod weight as the numerator and 16 as the denominator. 9/16th ounce, yes, but don't mutilate the poor rod tip. I've made spinning rods from 6'6'' 2wt. to 9' 10 weight for self, friends & customers. Cutting off part of the tip is counter productive, IMO, unless test casting proves this to be necessary. If you're wrong you ca
