What has been your experience with various brands of silver metallic thread with regard to fading? Particularly under something like Perma Gloss, which does not have any UV protection. Is it something I need to be concerned about? Thanks to all

Help!!! I am building a light retro rod for my son based on his beloved silver & black, and was thinking about using perma gloss on the threads, rather than varnish which yellows. But it offers NO UV protection! How do you guys deal with this? I’ve been told not to use Flex coat color preserver on the black because of white spots. But I feel that I need to protect the colors from fadin

36. Re: Fuzzies
Kevin,
Welcome to the insainity that we all enjoy; at least some times!!!
I would be willing to bet that you are using too much tension on you thread, that plus it sounds as if your thread tensioner is the type that squeezes the thread, causing fuzzies. I just reciently got ahold of the new @#$%& thread tensioner, wow!!! I discovered that I was putting way too much tension on my own wraps. Y

38. Champagne Corks
Has anyone ever tried using champagne corks instead of traditional butt caps? I've seen several with interesting designs and thought it would be a bit different. I'm talking about salmon/steelhead and lighter rods only, used for throwing artificals, so the rod would never be placed in a holder or on the ground as in bait fishing. Just woundering if they would hold up at least as well as regula

I too have tried many of the preceeding ideas, all of which work to some degree. But I recently tried dental floss. Easy and cheep to obtain, and very easy to use. Just a couple of wraps on the foot to hold it, then slide the end of the dental floss under the other end of the foot to secure it. I may have to try the ultra thin floss on the really small fly type guides.

Just build up with drywall mesh tape and use rodbond to glue it all together.

I still have serveral boat rods that I built the way you described back in the mid '70's. They have seen severe service and are just fine. And yes, easeally refurbished or changed at a whim. My latest project will be finished this way also. It's just that most folks go with the epoxie for longevity. I don't like it on small lite weight stuff, but use it otherwise.

Marcel;
I've not see this done, but I have read that a lot of wood turners leave the cherry on the lathe, turning, and burnish it with a piece of soft pine. Just lightly rubbing it back and forth. Like I said, I've not done it nor seen it done; but I've read about it in several wood working magazines. It supposedly burnishes the cherry, warming it up and drawing the oils to the surface and g

45. EVA glue?
On to my next project. What do you guys and gals use to glue up your EVA Handles? Want to add some color banding cut on an angle, nothing fancy, just to spice it up a bit. Would Tight Bond III work on that as well as it did on cork? I'll be shaping on a mandrel prior to mounting it on the rod, if it makes a differance.
Thanks in advance.

I just finished a burl cork handle with ruberzied end pieces. Have always wanted to try the True-Oil I hear so much about. Is it compatable with the ruberized cork or should I aviod it and use cork seal instead? BTW also tried Tite Bond III--Loved it--NO GLUE LINES what-so-ever!!!
Welcome back all, it sounds as if the East coast show was a smashing success!!!

I believe the wooden handles were finished with varnish. As for buffing up the old bright work, try using Brasso, or a silver polish. Just don't use an abrasive type of cleaner, commit, etc. Should work just fine.
