Help!!! I am building a light retro rod for my son based on his beloved silver & black, and was thinking about using perma gloss on the threads, rather than varnish which yellows. But it offers NO UV protection! How do you guys deal with this? I’ve been told not to use Flex coat color preserver on the black because of white spots. But I feel that I need to protect the colors from fading. What are my options as you see it??? Fred Crum Dixon, Ca. Re: No UV protection? Help!!!

No finish will protect against UV damage/fading. Cp will not protect colors from fading. Cp is intended to maintain spool color and to prevent the thread from darkening and turning translucentwhen finis is applied to the thread, not to prevent fading. Since black thread can't get any darker. CP isn't needed and won't affect it.

Black is not going to be a problem, but over time, many silver metallics do tend to fade out to a gentle grey or even somewhat white. It will take some time.
You might be better off asking the board users what has been their experience with various brands of silver metallic thread with regard to fading. .................. Re: No UV protection? Help!!!
