good point. I can see lots of examples here of it done right. Can anyone post pics of guides that are misplaced with an explanation of how they're wrong?
I do my load test (these are spinning rods) and adjust the guides but can't really tell if I'm making them better or worse.
thx

does any one have pictures illustrating proper and improper guide placement on a rod under load? spinning and casting?
I've read the descriptions but a picture or drawing would be very helpful
thx

You hit my problem square on the head. (You also caught me trying to stretch the lure weight 1/2 oz.)
I'm continuing my quest to replicate my old loomis l844-2 10-20lb 5/8-2.5oz with a 3piece. that rod has caught striped marlin, pacific sails and 80lb yellowfin though I admit, never a tarpon. I've tried though & they don't scare me.
bps advertises a travel rod in this range but I've nev

It makes sense to me to set guides based on the reel we use, if we expect to use the same reel over time or if we only want to use the rod during the life of the reel.
but most of my rods out live my reels or sometimes I switch reels on the same rod for different conditions. The guides will no longer be optimum and could be way off if reel design changes over time, etc.
could we be better

Throwing 1/2-3/4 oz spoons and crankbaits to steelhead & salmon is popular on the piers here in Chicago. distance is key.
9 ft spinning gear with 30lb powerpro is standard. You can also add a flouro leader and float spawn, cooked shrimp, etc.
however I think 1 or 2 piece rods are a PAIN and 1 or 2 piece 9 ft rods are a 9ft PAIN so I built a batson IF907-3 (3 piece 7wt fly rod rx7) an

I've used your blanks but not components. As a very occasional builder, I like to fit components to the blank and reel before I buy them. that means a trip to the rodbuilding shop and since you don't distribute in the Chicago area....well...I'm sure you understand.
This also makes it hard for me to buy your blanks. Since I can't see them, I have to trust faith that I'll like the feel while I c

I'm looking for a general purpose 3 or 4 piece light saltwater or musky blank.
(those who saw my L844-2 post, this is another presentation to see if I can get any more hook ups)
I want it to be my all around travel rod for everything between 12-20lb line though it will probably mostly get 15 or 20. I'll troll cuda tubes, rapala magnums, and throw a variety of lighter musky lures(mostly spin

I'm looking to replicate a loomis l844-2 gray blank (gl3? about 16 yrs old) with a 3 or 4 piece blank. I love that l844-2 but want something more travel friendly.
This rod was built as a tarpon and musky inline spinner & sucker rod and has even caught a 140lb class striped marlin.
rating from loomis was 3/8- 2 1/4 oz 10-20lb line.
I'll probably build it as a casting rod but may buil
