I do the same as Jack. But occasionally the pesky tag end slips through the wrap and sticks out defying you to try and trim/burn it off. I eventually learned to ignore it at this point and attack it later. Just go ahead and apply the epoxy as normal but after the first coat cures break out the razor blade and carefully trim the tag off and finish with a second coat. The two coats will blend toget

I rotate the first guide 60 degrees, the second 120 degrees and the third is at 180. I don't use micro guides. It is important that the direction of rotation is to the left for a right hand reel and to the right for a lefty. The argument can be made that if you use a reel with a level wind feature the first guide should be at 0 degrees to relieve pressure on the level wind as it won't have to

Jon, You should have drilled the hole as close to the blank diameter as possible before you turned the handle. After you drill the hole the unturned grip is put on a mandril then turned to final shape. There are lots of youtube videos that detail step by step how it id done. Don

I didn't say that I received a defective blank, just asked a hypothetical question. I'm sorry if any of my posts read as though I did. The following is what initiated my post; I read a post in another sight stating that a badly bent blank was received from a vendor and the recipient was asking what he should do. The resolution; He called the vendor and told them what he received. They

>"The bottom line is that the buyers must cover all the vendors costs or the vendor goes out of business."< I agree. The buyer must cover the legitimate costs but not those that might happen because the vendor doesn't check his product prior to shipping. If the vendor inspected the blank before he ships it there would never be a return because of a defect in the blank. If

Mr Staples, I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I received a defective rod blank, I didn't, a post on another sight brought the question to mind. I thought that there would be some interesting comments so I posted the question. Don

If you receive a defective mail order rod blank that has to be sent back for exchange, who do you think should pay the return postage? It is my opinion that the seller has the responsibility to check the blank for defects before selling/sending them therefore the the seller should assume all the costs of an exchange. Don

I use all of the above but mostly sandpaper. Vary the grit starting with 80 and down to 220. I don't like to glue the rings together with epoxy as It dries harder than the cork and is hard to sand even with the softer cork. I use titebond 3, it dries softer and isn't effected by water. Don

Wow!! that's not much to work with. If you are going to slide everything over the butt end I don't think that a cork grip reamed to fit over the larger diameter butt will work. The "ID" of the grip will be way to large at the reel seat end and will require building a shim that will follow the rods taper to fit between it and the grip. The arbor has to contact and support the whole grip

If you put the spine and the running guides on the bottom you will have two means of countering rotational torque. This seems to me a better way to build a spiral than just sticking stuff on any place and it doesn't take any more effort. Don

I'm having problems with reels loosening on my spin rod builds. I've been using Fuji reel seats on most of my builds. With a Shimano Stella 5000 reel the fit is sloppy and loosens while reeling in fish. My last build was a shark spinning rod using an Alps reel seat and a Shimano Saragosa 1800 reel. I can't tighten the reel in the seat enough to stop the reel from wobbling in the seat and eventual

Thanks for the info Roger, It sounds more complicated than I want to deal with so I think that I'm just going to build a platform to mount the motor on and turn it around when I want to change the direction of rotation. Don

I want to be able to switch the direction of rotation back and forth on my Renzetti lathe without eliminating the foot pedal. Can this be done? Don

I just finished a spinning rod on that blank it will be used for sharking. I used double foot Fuji K guides because I want to be sure that I'm not going to have problems should I be fortunate enough to hook a Mako Casting performance isn't as important as it's ability to fight fish so I didn't worry about additional weight or adding stiffness. If I were building a spiral on that blank it woul

I recently purchased one. No foot control was avaliable from Renzetti so I did some searching. I ended up at a sewing machine sales/repair shop and this is where I solved the problem and saved myself over $100. I bought a used motor with a foot control unit for $35. The motor fits on the Renzetti bradket so the only stuff that you have to buy from Renzetti is the motor bracket (SKU MM3003) and th

When I strip the guides from a rod and replace them (in the same location) I only remove rhe epoxy forn the threads. If as Billy said above doesn't work I leave the epoxy that extends past the wrap alone if it is in good condition. I use a fingernail card to lightly sand inside the bands of good epoxy level being careful not to scratch the blank or the epoxy bands. Don't wory that there is some e

I would test glue a couple scraps with contact cement and another pair with Titebond III to see how it works. Two part epoxy will certainly bond them together but I see a big mess trying to stack them on a mandrill to allign them then removing the mandrill. I see another possible problem with the epoxy and titebond. The liquid will seep into the EVA and cure hard possibly causing problems with fi

I've used it successfully in the same wrap with Madera. Covered it with Threadmaster and ChromaSeal. Lots of colors and shades at a local sewing machine store. I'm going to stay with Madera but I will not hesitate to use it in a pinch. Don
