Hi Scott, I have no idea what a frog rod is all about as I only fish salt water. Just checked and I have the C470HF in stock. I hang sinkers on the tips of all the models I stock to find the sweet spot for fishing bottom. This blank I like for 4-6 oz sinkers and if I trimmed the tip an 11/2" or so it would handle 8 oz load. It will make a nice fluke, sea bass and porgy rod. These

Hi Scott, I have built on many of the models, C2SW, C4, SG79HM, SG70MHM, prototype musky series and the XC prototype. The owners love them. I like the SG79HM for 6-8 oz sinkers that I trimmed. These are being used all around Long Island in shallow and deep waters under varied conditions. They work!!! The are sensitive, light weight and load up just fine. Go for it! Hope this helps.

Hi Jim, Go thru your blank catalogs and pick out the blank that you think is the best for the criteria. Post it here and hopefully you will get gopo input both positive and negative. It can be a great learning experience for you.

Good morning, Great thread. I have broken two about 15 years ago and I have been fishing over 65 years. Both were while running a party boat drift jigging for blue fish. Was having a difficult day finding the blues. Grabbed one of my light sticks, tied on a 4 oz diamond jig and tried to hook a blue. Was jigging in deep water while watching the scope and noticed one green dot at about 40'

Hi Matt, You might be joking but it is an excellent idea. Yes, triple the price as being the builder you can charge what ever you want. The buyer either accepts the price of goes away. Look at the extra cost as an insurance policy. Ed, why did you not tell the owner it was his responsibility to send the blank back to the factory as they warrantee the blank..Let the factory tell him the d

Hi Mike, Cutting about 3 " off tip make for a #7 tip barrel. Cutting 9" would be about a #9+. I have these blanks in house. If you are any wheres near Sayville, NY 11782 you are welcome to come by and pull on them.

Hi Mike, I did not have a long piece of mono in front of the braid. If I had the reaction to the porgys fighting would have been softer. For the test I grabbed a reel loaded with braid and used it as it was. If you like a blank with a soft flex this is a good one. I bounced a 10 and a 12 oz sinker at the 6" position down from the tip. The tip handled both and the tip was still so

Hi Mike, I build boat rods for bottom fishing so I am very interested in what size sinkers will work on the blanks I buy. The RODgeek SG79HM is a good 2-5 oz sinker rod. The beauty of the blank being 7'9" is that I can cut several blanks from it. I have built several where I cut the tip back to a #7 tip top and cut the butt for 61/2' and 7'. I wanted to be able to use 6 and 8 oz sink

Hi Kevin, Sounds like you want a RCLB model. I build on the RCLB 70XL for local fishing around Long Island New York and it is a great blank. I was told a few years ago that this model in higher pound class catches many big fish in the Pacific North west. Call the Batson brothers as I am sure they have used these blanks for halibut.

Hi John, Yes, two dozen rods that I used as a test half are used on a party boatout of Port Jefferson on Long Island Sound and the other half are on a party boat out of Captree on the south side of long island in the ocean. Many times being used with 6-8 oz sinkers for fluke, sea bass, porgys, tog, blues and bass. I stay as best as I can with the Minima 4's as the ring flange flairs aroun

Hi Joe, I have used the Minima tip tops on every rod that used the guides. I use them on my own rods and also customer rods. Have not had a rod come back for tip top problems. They work. Sometimes hard to convince people that they do work.

Hi Kevin, I would use the Pac bay Minima 4 guides. They work, are very reasonably priced and best yet is that the rings can not pop out. Don't let the metal ring trouble you. You can use braid with these guides. I rewrapped 24 party boat rods with the Minima 4 guides. 5 years later they are still in use and not one has been returned for service.

Hi Nate, Are you stripping just the guides and rewrapping? Are the guides going back into the same areas? Is the exposed part of the blank area damaged? Many times the guides can go back into the same place and just extend the wraps enough to cover the finish line if you can't get all the finish off the blank. Just stripped an old Fenwick surf rod today. First cut all the wraps off.

Hi Bill, I think so. After I figured out what I think happened I felt sorry for the poor tog. It fought like a big one, very powerful. Ha, ha, probably a 3 lber! If I gotten that tog up and to the net and he was large I would have released it. But boy I sure enjoyed experiencing that togs power.

Hi Jim, Next time you order components order a cheap set of guides, #20-16-12-10-10-10-10-10-8-8-8-8-6-6. Now you will have a Static Deflection guide kit. This will enable you to do the Static Deflection and then know exactly which guides and how many of each. This is for a casting rod. You can order a set for spinning or any other type of rods.

Hi Barry, I built on a prototype Mojo Muskie blank, 950MM72MHF. In the present catalog it is the MKY72MHF, 7'2", 30-65#, 3/4-3oz. It is a Carbon 2 series blank. I never fished a musky rod so I was interested especially since the blank only weighed 4+ ounces, very light. It handles 6-9 oz. sinkers easily. Just before tog season ended i was on a party boat deep in the Sound eas

Hi Bill, The RODgeeks blanks are designed by the St Croix designer but to specs desired by the RODgeeks people. I am very happy with the tog stick I made last Fall. Just finished an S Glass porgy/fluke/sea bass rod that I can't wait to use. Have a couple more I want to build for myself to use this Summer/Fall. Love the colors and color combinations.

Hi Nate, After sending the bad blank/rod back to the manufacturer and if they offer a replacement I would ask them to cut the butt off the defective blank. Then ask them to send you the new blank and the butt end of the defective blank back to you and you offer to pay for the shipping costs. Even offer to pay something for the old butt with your custom grip. If you get the new blank and y

Hi Kerry, Good info presented. I do what others do, 18-24" area. This is a good starting point. I agree make sure the line does not score the fore grip under a heavy load or your hand. As I deflect the rod under a load I make sure that the line comes in contact with the butt guide ring.

Hi Ken, I found the Stuart tackle web site and it still shows the "tuff butts". Here is their phone # 305-651-3474. I hope the fact that the web site is still up means that they are still in business. Neil

Hi Ken, Had to go back to my 2009 Merrick Tackle catalog to reinforce my memory about the "tuff butts". Seems like many years ago that I may have used one. The price was right and easier to install. Looks like you are right, they may be gone. Didn't some one buy Stuart Tackle a few years ago? I hope some one has a few left in stock for you. Neil

Hi Ken, I have you contacted Batson. Got the slick butts from them the last time. It would be a loss if they no longer existed as they work great in rod holders.

Hi Jason, If it was me I would call AFTCO. This way you will get an exact answer from the Company. Here is their phone #, 949-660-8757. While talking with them ask for a copy of their new catalog. As always it contains lots of good info and specs that are helpful to us rod designer/builders. I have always found them to be very helpful.
