Hi, I use a Russell International Utility knife # P94807. It can also be called an offset knife and also a sandwich knife. The handle is offset about 40* from the blade. This has a serrated cutting edge. I lay the flat of the knife on the blank and saw my way thru the grip. Hi JB, Rod varnish is what they used. I would dip my finger in the bottle and then rub it into the wraps. We would redo this every so often. As a young boy my father would fish with linen line. At the end of the trip he would rinse the line in fresh water and then spool it on a line drying spool. When the line was dry he would respool it onto the reel. If he did not do this the line w

Hi Russ, I have hundreds of those wooden butts, mostly longer ones. Will you believe that I have lots of the wooden hosels they used? The ones where you wrapped the thread up on them. They will probably end up in my casket for ballast, ha,ha!

Hi, These rods were sold around the 1950's in the New York area. Many rods like that were 2 piece rods. Someone else may be better able to pin point the date better.

Hi, I use 2 coats of flat white paint. Then 1 coat of Fex Coat color preserver. This coats the white paint with a hard coating. Now the pull thru string will not pull white paint off with it. HTA pearl or white nylon A shows up pure white. Capt Neil

Hi, Always an interesting topic. I was told that Diawa offered spiral wrapped rods for a couple of years in the late 80's. I did not see them so I am unable to confirm this info. Anyone remember these? I love it when guys on a party boat try to realign my guides thinking they are helping me out. And this is a one piece rod.
