no i was only able to outcast my friends with the 1/8 ounce. with the 1/16 we were generally fairly close but i really don't think i got any farther then them. now if i had a smaller casting setup it might be different and i'm actually looking into buying a daiwa sol because it is a little smaller then my 153 so i should be able to throw even lighter weights farther because of the smaller spool.

i throw alot of soft plastics in the bays. most of the time i use 1/16 or 1/8 ounce jig heads but have been known to throw them weightless occasionally. with 1/8 ounce jigs i have been known to get more distance then my friends using spinning reels. main thing is when you buy a baitcaster pull the spool bearings out clean them with brake parts cleaner to get the factories crappy oil out of them t

oh also this is gonna be for fishing the bays for trout and redfish so any suggestions on reel seats that won't bind up and corrode like nickle or aluminum seats do?

67. rating a blank
ok with all this talk about resonant frequencies and class ratings on blanks i decided to finally ask a question i've been pondering for awhile. last year i bought a few unmarked blanks from andy before he turned distributor only. he wasn't sure what the blanks were or the ratings on them but they felt good to me and the price was right so i picked them up. anyways i was wondering since i have th

i built a speck rod out of a med light 7' cts pro series for myself and that has to be the most impressive and lightest rod i've ever fished in that size of blank. can't think of the model number off hand but i bought it from andy and he said it would handle 1/4 to 1/2 ounce which it has done just fine. anyways some of my more serious fishing buddies have tried it out and loved it enough to want

i was looking through acid rods website and came across an automatic finish mixer and was wondering what ya'lls opinion of this little tool is. i've gotten pretty good at mixing threadmaster and getting it on the blank mostly bubble free but was curious if this little gadget would make it any easier

what about using sewing thread for wrapping guides? i've heard some threads aren't strong enough to wrap guides with and recently had an eye in the middle of a blank come out for some unknown reason. was a single foot eye wrapped with the locking frohan

i wouldn't worry about the hardware too much. nick uses mostly batson components on his customs so chances are the guides and reel seat on the hdx are batson as well but i don't know for certain.

toms right the adjustable reel seats are the way to go for what your wanting to do and you don't have to worry about it moving on you during a fight. a few people that i've met recently in my area have let me test them out so i could see for myself that the reel wouldn't slip when fighting a big fish. the backcast is alot easier then it looks. i just learned it recently and am slinging lead fairl

sorry andy i should have specificied that you weren't the person who said it would cast farther and be more sensitive. i've actually talked to a couple other builders and 1 of them told me about the sensitivity thing and it getting more distance. matter of fact those are some of his selling points when he spams the fishing boards i'm on. ya'll might have heard of him he makes "billystix"

any big fish i've ever caught were on conventional reels. i have a nice medium heavy blank that i think i'm gonna turn into a kayak rod and will wrap it in a spiral setup just so i can see exactly what you guys are talking about.. now i just need to research where to start the spiral and how to set it up

78. spiral wrap
ok so i must be an idiot or something but could somebody please explain why you guys seem to like the spiral wrap so much? i've caught some rather big fish including some really large sharks and i've never felt a rod try and twist out of my grip which is 1 of the reasons given for using a spiral wrap. does it really get you any real extra distance on casting compared to a normal wrap? how much mo

i just started doing this a couple months ago and i've been progressively trying more time consuming butt wraps and have a few questions
1. when doing a 4 axis wrap do you guys just mark your centers for your first cross?or do ya'll mark the center of the blank all the way down for every axis to make sure you cross in the exact center every time?
2. what type of pencil do most use? i have

could really use some advice on this cause well i'm kind of a perfectionist and until i can get the string laying right i'll never get this rod finish

stopped by andy's shop last night (ya i'm lucky he's only 45 minutes away) and damn you wanna talk about customer service. not only did he have everything i needed but he straightened me out on alot of things i was unsure about and even took the time to teach me a few things to make my life easier and make my rods look better. dude's got a customer for life now or atleast as long as i build rods.

thanks for the info and images guys. today at work i realised i had a couple drill's with busted chucks laying around that had good motors so i'm gonna rig up some kinda mount for those motors with a reostat and sewing machine peddle and i do believe that'll fix my dryer motor issue along with making my wrapping easier.
so just outta curiousity what are the more common well liked bass/ inshor

hi folks i just recieved my first wrapper this week and have a couple questions that i haven't found answers for.
i'm gonna be building some rainshadow surf rods soon cause i really like how they cast and such but they don't seem to make a blank for 1 of the length lure ratings i'm looking for so was wondering if i could cut a blank down to increase it's lure rating. for instance can i take a
