I built my own wrapper (non-power) and use my home built thread carriage when wrapping most stuff. I do use bobbins when wrapping decorative wraps though. :)

Have heard the XC731 is a killer black fish stick. Cut the butt down 3" to make it 7' and it also balances better. Norman Miller Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > RodGeeks XComp series. > > Norm

I used a knife and whittled it down on the rod I'm rebuilding now. The epoxy they used turned hard over the years as well. After knife scraping I went at it with some sandpaper glued to a piece of wood to smooth it down.

Yeah, warm it up in the microwave for 15 or 20 seconds and stir. Try that to start and repeat if necessary.

Wrapped single foot for a tip is old school. I stopped doing that a while ago. I now run 20, 12, 8 in mid/high frames and then change to single foot fly guides on out to the tip and use a normal tip top. Don't have any drag issues and the single foot fly guides are noticeably lighter giving you a crisper feeling rod.

This is my new wrapper I just finished building. And here are a couple of closeups of my thread carriage to give you another idea. I'm used to having my thread come up from the bottom. You can see the eye I used to transition across the lathe bed.

Same blanks I use for pike and lakers here in Yellowknife. They are great sticks for the job. :) I order from Utmost Enterprises and they are nice enough to cut them down for me so I pay less shipping because of length. I get them to just toss the off cut to save weight. ;) roger wilson Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Justin, > By far, the most p

Yes, It really makes a wonderfully quirky build that is sure to set your builds apart from the masses!!!! I have been using husky hair in my builds!!!! You can make some nice wraps with the long tail hairs!!! ^_^

You might want to look into the FG knot. Run braid to your heavier mono/flouro leader ending at your sinker. The FG is the smallest cleanest knot for connecting braid to heavy leader material.

Thanks for the response Russ. A lot of what you wrote I have already thought about. Especially the hydration thing. I always drink a ton when fishing in the tropics. I also have a full compliment of micro fiber shirts, shorts and buffs to go along with some good hats. I also have a drawer full of good quality polarized glasses from Smith, Ray Ban, Haber and of course Costa. :) I will also be

Hey all Been a while since I have posted here, I am however looking at posts daily. ;) I live in the Great White North in Canada's Arctic but have started planning for retirement and have decided I will take my leave from the frozen barrens in the NWT when retirement time finally comes. The plan is to change it up and move to Panama to chase salty fish and as such will need a ton of new gear (

I've actually got a 9 1/2' MHX rod that I have used as a CP as well as bottom bouncing rod. It works great. Lots of good Rainshadow options too. Personally I hate rings. They are always coming loose and as said need to be taped. This is especially true as the rod gets older and the cork starts to deform from being under pressure. I only use proper reel seats on my rods for this reason. I typically use spey skeleton seats like Batsons RA8.5L2 SKELETON SERIES. I then turn my own inserts. Here are a few pics of the seats I'm talking

I fish 13'-15' rods mostly from shore and 9'-11 1/2' rods when boat fishing steelies/trout/salmon.

I use 20, 12, 8, running guides, tip. Depending on use I will use #6, #7 or #8 running guides and tip. No need for all those extra intermediate guides. I'm with Brian on the running guides as well. About 95% of the time I use single foot fly guides. I have been making more and more rods with minnima guides to cut down one weight on the tip of the rod also. As a bonus you can step down to a s

Another thing that may work well is Spider Thread that is an elastic self cinching thread used for tying spawn sacks for trout and salmon fishing. Just wrap a few turns over it's self and pull to seat and break. Sort of like the elastic beading thread without having to tie any knots. Guess I'll have to see if I have any at home and try it. ;)

I've always done my weaves after the handle has been installed. I figure there is less chance of messing up the weave if the handle is on already.

Moved to the Arctic and needed more hobbies to fill the long dark winters. I also find that custom rods fish much better and are built much better with higher quality materials. The artistic side is also a big plus. Nothing like a nice custom turned reel seat insert finished with 20 or 30 coats of CA and then polished to a mirror shine with some 12,000 grit micro mesh!!! :)

I'm with Billy on the flocking. All of my ice rods use flocked cork grips with regular reel seats. I even started flocking the reel seats. Keeps the old fingers a lot warmer. Here's a rod handle on a stick I built for a friend.
