I've dealt with Jann's for as long as I can remember. They were a small shop on the side streets of Toledo when I started building. Now they have a big place of the turnpike. The one thing they never lost was customer service. i drive past Janns about twice a month and i can't count the times i've called an order in from the car and 20 min later it was waiting for me at the desk.

Let me start off with these facts.
over 75% of my rod work is repair/restoration of classic cane rods
another 10% is graphite/glass repair
the remainder is custom builds.
Most of the new builds are for past clients who I've done work for.
my question is. how do I get my name/business out there for more custom work.
The area i'm in is very into fly rods which is great. there i

BPS lists that model as a med action IM7 blank. Judging by the price It's not their top of the line and many of the reviews state problems with breakage. If he likes the action I'd look for something similar in a quality blank from one of the sponsors.

I'm about to redo an older fiberglass fly rod. the original finish is scuffed and dirty. I'm going to 3M it down and then recoat before wrapping.
Question is, what finish to use.
Perma gloss, maybe too "Hot" and screw things up if I don't get all the original finish off.
Clear coat auto finish. Done this before on blanks and am ok with it.
Spar varnish probably what is on

I've got a bunch of discs that are punched out of those auto gaskets. I think they are about 1/16" thick. you could glue two together. Let me know if you want a couple.

I've got a couple of BBQ motors but i thought the microwave one would be a good option. Knowing now that it will take more fiddleing to make it work I may pass and just buy one from one of the sponsors next time I place an order.
Maybe the thrill of the hunt was the best part.

OK so I couldn't resist the chance to pirate the mototr from the broken microwave since I heard they can be used for dryers. However, looking at the motor specs it says
"AC 21V 3.0W. Now I'm not a electrical genius but I'm guessing that if I plug this into a 120 outlet I'll either fry it or it will spin like the devil.
Is this really ok to wire up for a dryer or did I just waste s

Maybe I'm slow and this has been done but...
I needed to replace the spigot ferrule on one of my old favotire rods due to the fact that the male was worn down.
I was just getting ready to start work on it when I eyeballed the tube of gap filling CA glue that I used to finish a reel seat.
Thinking I had nothing to lose I chucked the rod in the dryer and painted a couple of even coats of t

Thanks Bob. I'll go down that road.
What other blanks have you found.
I only know of about 4 that are available.
Would you be willing to share your list?
Thanks

I've got a customer who just took a switch casting class and really wants a custom version of the TFO 11' 7wt Deer Creek rod.
I've done some searching but can't find a supplier. Any help!!
Thanks

And then there is the "how it's made " video on you tube that shows the guy at Thomas and Thomas using a turkey baster full of varnish to coat the rod.
I alyways use the dip tank or the drain tank method.

552. Re: Just pondering,
I agree with Jim on the portfolio vs. actual rods idea Ther is a local fly shop that carries some fairly pricey rods and he has consignments of several bamboo makers. I've seen thses rods and other custom graphite rods sit on his rack for over a year. I made a deal withthe owner to get all the repair businees that comes in. I had my son make up a really nice brochure with pictures and examp

Robbie,
Thanks for the update. I didn't see the varigated or twists on the web site. Is this something new and if so who will be carrying it.
Thanks

When you say Verigated do you mean that the color changes every few inches of are you talking about a "jasper" twist. If it's a twist I would vote for that. It's great thing for us restorers.

Having done this a few times, I would not dril all the way through from the broken side. If the other side is dimples enough to see it you are going to have to smooth that out anyway..
Are you taking the ferrule off to reseat it or do you jaust want to make the ferrule look original??
You could carefully drill the pin from the broken side with a small bit. I would go with a .038 and slo

I'm guessing by the cracked ferrule that the rod is a Montague or South Bend. I have some NOS Montagure bamboo ferrules. Send me a drawing with measurement and I'll dig around the stash. No telling what's in there. we may have what you need.

Thanks Joe,
It took me a minute to figure out your measurements.
If I figure it right your measurements will put the first stripper guide about 40" from the reel. Dous this work for you? To me 40" seems like a long distance wiout a guide. But then again, what do I know!

I'm looking for a baseline starting point for guide spacing for a 13' 7/8 wt spey rod.
I know i'll probably tweak it to make it work but I need a starting point. BTW. I'm using single foot guides
Thanks

We're talking in excess of 30" and they are not the stupid pond carp from the park. Drop the fly a little too close and the whole pod scatters.

I'm thinking of building a switch rod and was originally going to use it for salmon/steelhead. Then I got the idea that" hey this could work for carp in the bay." anybody tried this. I'm thinking the Batson 7 wt and if need be could move up to a heavier line.
All thoughts and comments are welcome
Thanks

561. Re: Orvis Blanks
I have a local club that orders a rod every year as a prize. for years they have wanted a custom Orvis but I couldn't offer it. When I got myy Mud Hole catalog last week I saw the blanks. I called my contact and they are thrilled. We are working on the details this weekend. Woo Hoo.

any kind of alcohol will disolve the finish on Heddon, South bend and Shakespear rods. It does not seem to effect the finish on H & I. For a quick cleaning use mineral spirits. for a deeper clean try Meguires (car care) cleaner.

OK this is just something I can't wrap my head around so I'll ask the REALLY DUMB question.
I'm looking at getting a power wrapper to speed up production.
What I cannot get a grip on is that since the rod is now moving fast. what prevents the thread from either stacking up on top of itself or from just spirialing up the guide?
When hand wrapping I have complete control but I feel like I'll

I do mostly bamboo fly rod repair. In the past I've always hand wrapped. Now I'm faced with the fact that i've got 10 rods to completely redo. I'm thinking about a power wrapper but have a few questions.
Can I use a power wrapper on cane without it going bumpity bumpity bump in the rollers?
since most or the wraps are fairly short, is there really an advantage to power wrapping
can I get th

For the fly blank don't forget to look at the Lamiglas fiberglass. 7.5' 4 wt 6 pc and 8' 5 wt 6 pc. I've built the 8' and taken it out West several times. A very nice blank with a slightly slower action that is a joy to cast.

Now that it's over I can laugh this one off but...
I needed to glue up some reel seats and went to mix up some rod bond. Sat down at the bench and grabbed the two containers. Opened the first and thought "that's getting towasrds the bottom of the jar".
Gradded the next one and thinking it was low tipped it sideways and twisted the cap off in one good turn.

I've built two of thses this year on the 8'9" blank one for a customer and one for myself.
On the customers rod he insisted on chrome snakes guides. we did it with a REC uplocking seat aluminum clear finish with green stablized insert. Dark green wraps tipped in light grey almost silver.
On mine I used a TiCh seat hardware with a swirled green plastic insert that had shades of

I built one a few years ago on the Lamiglas im700 9'7 wt blank. I went with a full wells grip. 2" fighting butt and alconite guides. It works great for Lake Michigan run steelies and is a good back up salmon rod with an 8 wt. . the nice thing about single foots is that if you "chuck and duck" you will notice the increase in distance.
For reels I use a Ross Cimmaron or a
