Since I mostly build fly rods I need some help here.
I've got a regular customer who wants a 7' UL spinning rod
He's probably going with the MHX 7' 1 pc blank
here's what I'm thinking for guides
Fuji alconite
byag 25
byag 16
byag 10
bunag 8
glag 7
blag 6 the rest of the way
does this sound right/make sense?
what should I change if anything?
Thanks

Try Kettle Creek rods.
Phil does glass and his stuff is great. I've built several rods on his blanks and my customers love them.
I think this is his current info. he does not have a web site or E mail so phone is the best way and it may take several tries before you get in touch with him.

I've started teaching classes ,not rod building, at the local community college. A few things I learned by doing this.
1. always practice what you are going to teach before you get to class.
2. do it the right way first and show short cuts later.
3. it's easier if everyone is doing the same thing. applied to rods, everyone does fly rods or spinning rods. don't mix.
4. some people get

With out CP I'd go bright red with gold accents. That would be my first choice
second would be med blue with the metallic blue accents or the gold accents.
Straight up metallic is too much bling for a fly rod.

I've got a collection of old varnish, lacquer and CP bottles on the shelf in my shop. If you go back to that place and they are still there I'd pay you to pick up 2 of them for me.

I'm just going to throw out an idea here.
Does anyone from the Mi Ohio area want to get together just to say hi and put names and faces together and maybe talk a little shop.
While I appreciate the Chicago offer, I think some of us just can't make it.
Since it sounds like Jann's is not receptive how about meeting somewhere around Cabelas in Dundee. there's a bob evans right there

South East Michigan near that yellow and blue school but don't hold that against me since one son goes to school in Ohio and the other one to MSU.
From my house to Jann's is about 45 min.
Cabelas in 25 min.
I was maybe going to Chicago on business but Oct 30 is the wrong weekend. Darn!!

492. Re: fishing shows
I did my first show last January so I probably don't have much to talk about but...
the show was a "fly tying expo" since I build mostly fly rods it worked out.
The organizers were looking for people to tie different styles/kinds of flies.
I asked about rod building. they thought it was a great idea.
booth space was free(a bonus) and I took along some rods to sell a

I build fly rods almost exclusively. I t seems that fly fisherman are more picky about the cork in their grips then others.
I usually use the best grade I can get and if I need to fill I use Elmers light oak like others suggest.
The only sealer I use is to cove the grip in heat shrink plastic to keep it clean for delivery.
I put it on as soon as the grip is shaped so my grubby mitts

Dental floss loop here to. I grabbed a wooden bead and a few small beads from the wife's jewelery stuff and crimped them on the end. two years and still haven't lost it.

496. Re: Reader Letter
I did a few shows early on in my rod building but soon found that they were a waste of time. Out of every 100 people that stopped by I would get maybe 2 calls. most people are just browsing and looking for bargains.
Because the economy is in the dumps and people are not buying new they are holding on to their old stuff longer. Instead of marketing new builds I turned to repairs.

I just finished out a 6' bamboo"banty" rod last week for a customer and used Perma gloss for the finish. I would have normally varnished the rod but the customer wanted to take it on a trip and my so the drying time for varnish was out out the question. Anyway, bottom line is that the perma gloss did a great job. 2 coats and it's tougher than spar varnish.

I had a customer come in last week with a Diamondback"Sue Burgess" 9 1/2' fly rod.
He wanted all new guide(the old ones were worn) and a new reel seat to replace the "cheap graphite"(his words) one.
the first interesting thing was that the rod was rated for 6-9 wt line.
I went to pull the seat and it only took seconds for the glue to give. Then I found out

I'll put this out there. I know all the Toledo area guys know there is Jann's and a BassPro. I think Bass Pro has free meeting rooms.

I'm about 40 min north of Toledo. If there was something in the Toledo/ perrysburg area I'd drive down.

I'm presuming that the bass aren't big ole' hogs.
i would go with a 8 1/2'-9' 5 wt.
It's a good all around rod. I would not go for a faster action but stay toward the moderate side.
In fact i just delivered a 8 1/2 ' 5 wt Batson if 865 that the guy is using as an all around rod.
There are a ton of blanks out there is this size. pick you favorite maker and go.

FYI, I was at Jann's last Friday and there wer still a bunch of ice blanks in the bin in the corner. So they are probably still in stock if you went that route.

503. Re: mar krutz cork?
I emailed the guy back and asked for more info.
He sent me some sample shipping charge documents and I think the price of the actual cork is included in there.
I have not had a chance to actually look it over carefully.
I'd be happy to share these with anyone who want to see them and investigate this more.

I use the exact same blank as Bob for freshwater bonefish rods. I've even built it in a 7wt and used a 8 wt line.
single foot guides also.

I beg your pardon, that's a $25 reel, LOL.
I know what you mean. But that's what the customer wants so that's what it is.
Now that we know what kind of reel what about guides?

OK, so I'm getting a mental picture here. Short (7") rear grip, trigger seat, then some type of check or hosel to finish off the front of the seat.
I've thought about photo shopping the pictures from a catalog and pasting them together to look at a finished product. I may just have to try it with this one.

I haven't built a non-fly rod in years so I need some help here.
I've got an order for a casting rod.
The guy is using a Zebco 33 reel.
I'm thinking of using a custom builder 5'6" IS561L blank and a tcsm seat which is what is guy is looking for.
I'll probably use alconites for guides.
My question is on the grip. can I go with a straight rear and fore or should I think about
