Quick basic question - What's the differences between the Fuji KTTG and KBTG? I am having trouble telling. Thanks.

Interesting thread. I just did a quick read. I can't explain everything but recently, I've been exploring/examining Japanese UL rods and conclude that they are far more advanced in their analysis and manufacture than US rod manufacturers. I may be wrong but that's my take. Here's a sample page of the details they get into by just one of the manufacturers. Possibly goobledy gook? (I don't m

Blanks can take up to boiling temperature. At sea level, water maxes out at 212 F or 100C. So that is your safe temperature controlled method. Much higher, I think the blanks may start to unravel. Good youtube link Tom. I take pleasure in pulling the thread off by unrolling it so I nick one end on one thread, and then unroll the rest. Kinda like popping bubble wrap in the pleasure....:) I kn

Bruce, can you email me? your email is not visible. By the way, just did the math and realize that the TR56 and TR60 have tips below your specification. Thanks.

The TR 74 has .82mm solid tips. If you want thinner, you can also look at TR56 and TR60 with .73mm and .77mm tip respectively. The former is extra ultralight in power.

This query may be a bit obscure....but if there's anyplace on this planet to get an answer, I figure it has to be on this forum. Years ago, I saw a photo of a bar blank where someone put a weight at its end to show the action and power. However, instead of taping the weight on it as I have been doing, it was a thin sleeve of some material (maybe rubber?) where the person simply put it on the

Greetings Everyone- THANKS for all the responses. As usual, much much grateful! Question - what is a 'brick foam' arbor that Tom Kirkman mentioned? And what are 'composite' arbors? Are there arbors hard to the touch like plastic/carbon fiber or are the more like dense foam? Can you tell - I've never used an arbor before....:)

I'm looking for rigid arbors that is as light possible for maximum sensitivity - to mate between the blank and reel seats. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Yes - for a primer and paint - but note that these are VERY lightweight UL blanks I'm talking about. So the precentage of the paint to blank weight is higher than higher powered blanks. For salt water blanks, i would guess the percentage of weight can easily drop to 2-3% of the blank. Basically the paint weighs a LOT more than the guides and wraps put together - whcih is far too much for me un

Thanks. The deal with paint is that the lighter the blank, the greater its impact on performance as the paint weighs a higher percentage of the blank's weight. For a heavy powered and weight blank, I would guess that the impact is much less.

Yes to all - and particularly Tom. You got it. Wanted to know what is the lightest option if opaque paint is desired. Thanks

I recently experimented with stripping painted blanks. These are all high modulus ultralight blanks. To my surprise, the paint weighed about 12-15% of the blank weight! They are professional from the blank factory and they used a white primer and then painted on top. To me, that is a huge percentage of the weight. The blanks became noticeably more sensitive after the paint removal. Now I

129 views and no response so I assume that there is nothing out there like it available to the rod builder. Maybe I just need to make one myself - or get it made....

What is the weight of the spinners you make? What lbs test are you using? And what size fish? Email me if you wish. For guides, I would suggest the Fuji T-AT series.

Thanks Thomas. Very generous. Not sure if I should take you on your offer without paying you. I've never seen a 2.0 and am curious how tiny they must be. Smallest I ever went was 3.0. But it sounds like 3.0 pitches further for you. Is that the sweet spot or did not compare with even larger sizes like 4.0? I build for 2 to 4 lbs mono/fluoro. At most, 6 lbs and that is rarely.

Thanks everyone for the conversation. Much appreciated. So it seems that the advantages of the 5.0 and 5.5 are primarily for ease of wrapping, public acceptance, ease of threading line for older eyes? (I too have older eyes....:) and possibly passing knots through. Is there are distance detriment to using 3.0 over 5.0? If I recall Billy, you are fishing for bass and use something like 1

I really like what Fenwick did on the reel seats of their River Runner Elite trout rods. Does anyone manufacture reel seats similar to that? I can shape the cork myself - just need the plastic/carbon fiber parts. It's a beautifully simple and comfortable design. Thanks.

I remember when micro guides first came out years ago, there were some guys (Billy?) who were touting it to the skeptics and using guides as small as 2.5 if I remember. Angler's resource were carrying SICs down to 3.0, again if I remember correctly. However, Angler's Resource now only go down to 4.0 and I'm reading a number of 'micro' guide users going larger than 4. Is there a reason wh

Quite a few years ago, I ordered about half a dozen custom length mandrels from a gentleman on this forum. The price was reasonable, the quality was excellent, and the service impeccable.....:) The problem is that I forgot who it was and how to reach the gentleman. Does anyone know who makes a custom mandrels for cork turning? Thanks!

I've been 'chasing' UL rods for a while. While I am sure there are many here who have far more experience than I, my thoughts include: 1. Get the lightest blank you can for a particular power/action. I'm a big believer that the blank is the heart of a rod. 2. Build for lightweight. 3. Build for balance with reel mounted on the rod. Presumably you are using a spinning reel? 4. Build for

I hope this question is OK. It's basic but I can't the the info online. Does Fuji provide a specification sheet that gives the ID (inner diameter - or actual opening size) and not just the OD of its titanium framed SIC rings? Thanks! Mo

Thanks Matthew & Tom. That Taig sure looks like a quality precision tool and small. I dropped them an inquiry though they do seem $$$. They do look like they will last a lifetime and turn many thousands of handles. A bit of an overkill but beautiful looking. Will check out all the options. Thanks.

The lathe I use for my cork grips is one of those heavy cast metal affair. It's a bit of a paint to use as I have to drag it outside on a metal cart to avoid dust all over my work space. (Yes, I don't have a good vacuum system.) All I need is to turn grips up at 5 inches long. So my lathe can be very short - say up to 5.5" is enough. (If I need longer, I can just turn two parts and join
