I also build rods for friends and family. I build for the cost of the components and extras only. I add $20 for the misc. supplies - finish, cp, thread, adhesives, etc.

183. Re: Epoxy Mixers
I built my own variable speed epoxy mixer. I use small cups without ridges, and mix with a round steel ball/bearing (different size balls for different amounts of finish), and will never go back to mixing by hand. Mix thoroughly, pour epoxy onto cleaned lunch pie tins, and let stand for a minute or two. Absolutely no bubbles!!!

It seems to me a lot would depend on what end of the blank was cut off ??

I also use Sulky metallic threads (on about half of my builds) with no separation issues.

Do any of the RodBuilding.org sponsors carry the speed threaders? I have asked at Mudhole and Get Bit on a recent trip to Florida, and have looked for them in several big box store fishing departments with no luck. I wanted to buy around 8 of them to pass around to my fishing buddies!

I recently did a comparison of several colors (white, black, royal blue, candy apple, and goldenrod) ncp / nocp threads for a sports theme build I was doing. I tested FUJI nocp, PRO WRAP color fast, and some GUDEBROD that I had stashed. I also used cp on the ncp / nocp threads with Threadmaster Lite..................and chose the FUJI. Brighter colors and good consistent color. The rod

189. Re: NFL Logo decals
I used the white background because the decals had a lot of "clear" areas and the black blank would have shown throughand ruined the logo effect. If I remember correctly I got decals from Etsy and One Stop. I ordered some from Boston Nail Art but they never arrived.

Successful upload of decal photos in the thread art category. Not good pics - I just keep record photos if I need to duplicate the butt deco.

I just finished up a STEELERS themed rod and I used waterslide nail decals. I bought them from 2 different nail art suppliers on-line. They are sized well for use on smaller blank diameters (med-lt, & med fresh water)
and look pretty good to me when finished. This size would tend to be small on large rods. When using waterslide nail decals you will most likely want a white backgroun

192. Re: Colored Cork
I have purchased some colored fine burl cork rings from Custom Fly Grips (list to left) that I thought were very nice. I have also purchased some from Mudhole Tackle (list to left) that were also nice. I just liked the appearance of the CFG ones a hair better (it seemed as if the cork grains were a little finer) I don't know if both are supplied from the same source. I will purchase them again fr

I mix and match regular nylon and ncp nylon threads often, depending on the outcome I desire. I just finished up a rod that I used 4 different colors of ncp thread on (and 1 metallic) and it came out beautifully! The rod I am currently wrapping will have 1 regular nylon and 1 ncp thread on it (and 1 metallic plus some sulky holoshimmer) and so far it looks great. I have never (35 rods)

196. Re: 15th Anniversary
I'm looking forward to another year of using this wonderful resource to "up" my rodbuilding game! I am a hobby builder and have completed about 35 rods or so, and I think I am getting pretty darn good at it - and the majority of my building "chops" I can attribute to this website! Thanks for the first 15! (and to all of the contributors)

Check the decal background color before applying. Some of the decal colors may "disappear" into the blank color if the decal background is clear. May require a white or light background.

I store my many spinning reels (and a fly reel or two) on a section of 3/4" EMT conduit. I used a couple of stand-off clamps to hang the conduit from the floor joists in my basement, and then held the reel feet to the conduit with loose zip ties that can be slipped on or off of the reel feet. Works out very well for me. Keeps a bunch of reels from getting tangled up and keeps them v

I use a lot of CP on all types of thread, including Madeira, and have not had any problems with color washout or anything similar. I use several brands of CP including Flex Coat, U40 Color Loc, Chroma Seal, and Casons water based ( I have some Gudebrod 811 but it's so old I'm afraid to use it ! ). I also apply 2 good coats of CP and let each dry at least overnight - if not for 24hrs.

Currently I buy my most of my components and supplies from Mudhole, Get Bit, Rodgeeks, and Utmost Enterprises. I have never have had a problem with any of the above dealers that wasn't resolved quickly. In the past I have also used Anglers Workshop, Bingham Enterprises, Janns, and Midwest with no complaints. They all seem to be pretty good at what they do. I mostly use Mudhole and Get Bit

I have built about 8 or 9 rods for myself and friends using the Aero reel seats in both size 16 and 17. I have never noticed any problems with the reel loosening on any of my personal rods, and have not had any complaints from friends. Did you get the "comfort finish" version?

207. Re: Sizing guides
Matt
You did not say whether you are building spinning or casting rods, but the "New Guide Concept - Spinning Rods" article in the online library explains exactly the guide sizing and spacing info you are looking for. I use this method for all of my spinning rod builds and it works very well for me.
