Ok, thanks Phil. What is it that is bad about rayon on rods? What about the polyester?

242. Madeira Thread
I know many of you have wrapped with Madeira Thread. Have you used the Polyester or The Rayon? I know you need to use cp with them. What are your thoughts? Thanks

Perhaps 'contrast' and the two guide rings NOT matching was the desire. And all the hack experimentation and fun I have done with these has really focused on getting them centered. Trying and tweaking the wonderful stuff in your great mag and this forum is the core of its value, as is open, respectful discussion. Ex., " That's mine. Everything matches, which at least helps with the look&quo

Swampland, is that the name of a person? Well, "Swampland', where in my quote did I use the word 'only'? Shocked at your interpretation of the theme of my post. Unbelievable!

Thank you Larry! Custom rod building is a wonderfully creative venture. Fish don't split hairs as much as many of the 'boot-step/ $ is king' builders do!

Ah, 'cashing in on the market'! Of the 245 words you wrote to explain your opinion, ( over thinking?) those appear to be in neon. But as always, after meeting you several times, I appreciate your opinion and your blunt honesty Billy!

NOT joking at all Bill. I pride myself in doing them. Loved them from the first day Tom posted the idea/picture. Took me a little time to perfect the skill but I have it down nicely now and it does take my old hands about two hours to prep and tie in. My customers love them. Coming from someone as creative and free-spirited as Mr V, I was rather shocked at his opinion.

Quite contrary to what the renowned Mr V gave you as his opinion, putting two guides together to make a MW stripper is very 'custom' and very handsome. Works wonderfully and allows you to do custom inlay. And when you are done and it all works perfectly. You realize and take pride that it is one more thing on that fishing stick that was NOT made/done by a machine!

I love it if a guide comes out on the ferrule. That means a little less weight on the whole rod, since I always do a little ferrule wrap for strength and looks.

David I often test a new set guides on my various fly rods in the summer and I only attach them by a simple wrap, a Forhan locking wrap on single foots and I coat them with ONE coat of color preserver. If I'm not rough on them they hold up all summer!

Perhaps a bit corny but.....' Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. Do the absolute best you can do with any technique you have mastered in Rod Building. Put it into your current build knowing it represents the best you can do at this time. The more it involves sophisticated electrical, digital, power equipment ..... the more you have to give credit to modern machinery other than your 'hands/eye

263. Re: Why?
The satisfaction I derived as a young man, when I caught a trout on a fly I made, was simply exhilarating. That grew into making lures, jigs, plugs and poppers. Same exhilaration. A friend who owned a small bait shop and did reel and rod repair, sold some of my flies as I got better. I asked him about rod repair and building and he told me my fly tying skills would easily transfer to rod building

The more electronic, digital, big motor, expensive equipment you buy, use and master to build your rod, the less truly 'hand crafted 'it becomes. I would highly recommend that you start out with a hand wrapper and basic, sufficient, simple tools. Jump in and get your feet wet, with some slow, live & learn, elbow grease, truly custom builds to the best of your newbie ability. Be sure to keep t

266. Re: Shimano Spinning
I currently have 7 Shimanos ranging from Stradic to Spirex. NOT ONE has a spring click that is strong after a couple months of use. Several belonged to my boys and were close to new. They are fine for Walleye trolling, drifting and jigging. Where serious, pinpoint casting is involved they have failed me too many times. I have had several cleaned by pros and cleaned a few myself. I have tried to c

I fish private ponds mostly in Central Iowa. About 90% of this is fly fishing, from small boat to shore. I make all my own flies and rods.. Will also spin fish a little. When the opportunity arises, I go to Canada/Minn. for Walleye fishing and out West to streams in Idaho, WY., Montana, CO for trout fishing. I consider the Bluegill a fun and wonderful pursuit. However, I rarely refuse strikes fro
