272. 10 wt
Have never built a 10 wt. Assuming a person is good with their knots, what are the smallest runners one could comfortably use. Stripper size? Single foots with a good locking wrap ok?

Broke the tip top area about 3" down on my favorite fly rod. Too far down to do an easy fix. Are there any places out there anymore that do top piece replacement on older fly rods by sending them the butt section?

278. Re: Rod Building 101
Thanks guys. This post was more of a gentle, comic reminder to myself to, 'let the epoxy do what it is meant to do' . Roger, I know it's kinda like money .... if you have $15 dollars and you spend $16, you're in some trouble.

280. Re: 6' 2 pc blank
Joe, I have built on that blank many times and I agree it is a phenomenal gift rod. I have built 4 of them this spring for HS graduates. I'm looking to build up a cache of 2 pc rod blanks for kids builds as gifts and donations.

Learn the Static Guide Placement! It is not hard, it is super specific to your blank and it is kinda fun to see it all come together.

The more you build and actually fish with your rods, the more you will find that there is just a plethora of things in rod building that have minimal to squat influence on the fish-ability of your rods! My humble opinion after many years! ....... I caught several nice walleye and bass on my father's fiberglass rod from the 50's, last year in Minn. Built the same way today, it would be considere

What size guides are you using? Even with smaller guides I find that if I prep (Sand smooth to a flat point) the initial lay over wrap on the guide foot goes much easier. I also use a small tight wrap of VERY GOOD STICKY masking tape. Keep trying. You'll find a process that works for you.

285. Re: Opinion on Reels
I have personally and sadly come to the conclusion ( after 9 Shimano reels, ranging from Spirex to Stradic { I'm a slow learner}), that the spring that trips the bail is under-gunned for their reels. Not ONE of them worked well for any length of time last summer, even after cleaning and lubrication. I have tried to contact them about this but have had no luck.

286. Re: Fly Rods
Wow! What a double whammy you are in for. Learning to fly fish and going out and actually catching fish is joy enough in itself. Add to that the further pleasure of bonding a wish with your father is priceless. Enjoy, Enjoy Forrest!

I like Jay's answer. Experiment. Find the one you have the most consistency with, at a high quality level. That happens to be Thread Master for me.

289. Re: Mike Barkley
Mike has been a part of every rod I have built since the first time he responded to one of my 'newbie' questions years ago on this site. Then each time I met and watched him at the big show, my rod building skills and knowledge grew. He will continue to affect all my builds. We lost a great builder, teacher and American.

Where do guys order your Birch Bark for rod handles. My cache collected in the North Woods several years ago is almost gone. Thanks

So many fly rods I have cast feel just wonderful after a very short learning curve. Good casters make it all look so simple. And they can do that with a bevy of very different rods. An old soft, kinda heavy fiberglass, once you get used to it can be a blast for an hour or so. All day??!!?? Maybe not. "A man can't have enough fly rods!"

A 16, 8 and 4's as runners, set up to fit your reel, with a very light reel seat that perhaps you can even cut shorter to accommodate your reel foot...... will be unbelievably sweet, unique and custom. Wrap it in your favorite two color theme, one of those colors simply being short metallic trims wraps. Will be beautiful!

Good for you Michael. I simply do not feel good about decal signatures. 30 hours of hands, heart and brain working to build a one-of-kind 'Custom Made Rod' to the highest level a builder has evolved to and then slap a replica 'John Henry' on it. Just doesn't jive for me!

I still make my own microwave stripper mostly using a reg light frame 20 and a high frame light 6. I then experiment with one 'drop down' guide and the smallest runners that practice cast well with the rig. Only use mono and nothing larger than 8 lb. With a hybrid/custom variation of a Tenn. handle, created to fit a specific spinning reel, these rigs are unbelievably light, sensitive and sweet!
