I've been building a Northern Pike rod for my son; I offered to build him a spider web, but he wanted a plain cork grip. I couldn't give him just a plain grip so I made a couple of cork checkers out of flat cork stock to go in the grip. The blank is a St Croix Avid 3C70MHF with a St John's Cross from Billy's book. The colors were AJ's pick and I kind of like the look of it. The reel seat is a Fuj

I received a couple of parts from Marco in Brazil and thought that I'd put them to use on a Batson IP840. The thread wrap is a variation of a pinwheel and the grip is EVA. Thank you much for the pieces Marco I really appreciate it (also really like the look of them).

I had a 4wt Tiger Eye that was laying around and thought that I'd try a pinwheel from Billy's book. The colors are purple, neon green and black. The diameter of the blank was .330" and seven repeats.

I built a rod for myself for field testing. The blank is a MHX DS820 with mircro #4's to the tip with a #10 M-Style stripper guide. The St Johns Cross was wrapped on both the fore and aft areas at one time. The total time to wrap was 4 hours, I'm getting faster, but still have a way to go to catch Billy. It was a fun build and cast like a dream.

66. MHX 820
I've been having a couple of issues with my finish not laying flat like I wanted. I got a couple of pointers from Doc and can't beleive the difference. The blank used was a DS820 MHX with a 10mm stripper guide and #4 micros to the tip. A prototype built for my self to do some field testing.

I got a piece of wormy butternut from the guys at reelseatblanks.com and decided to fill the voids with turquoise. The grip was an experiment with epoxy and turquoise dust in the rear grip and super glue and turquoise dust in the fore grip. I found that I prefer CA as it sets up with less mess and it takes less sanding to get every thing back to level. The reel seat is a pen blank with a Batson s

A couple of simple tigers for my young nephews. It was a fun project on a shoe string budget. A couple of Mudhole blanks and some left overs total cost for both less than $50.

It's my second foray into an EVA grip. I like the results and the shape turned out fairly well. I need to work on segmenting some EVA.

The split section wrapped as Billy does. Both done at the same time and took 1/2 the time of the wraps individualy. It's amazing how that works, twice the work in 1/2 the time (lol). Billy you're a genius.

This is a photo of the blank before it was planed or turned. I made the rough blank long enough that I could get 6 grips out of one glue up. It is the rough blank for this grip .

I have been playing with casting resins. I imbedded a casting fly into imitation ivory and surrounded with walnut burl. The ramp is made with poly foam from a reel seat insert. The rod blank is a tiger eye 3wt.

85. Before
I should have paid closer attention to the back ground color. When I applied CP it turned to a copper brown and it should have been lighter brown in the back ground. Only 6 hours of work down the drain see the After photo.

86. After
I should have checked the colors before I finished the wrap. They wanted a lighter brown in the back ground 6 hours wasted. I get to start over now.
