I found the video I was talking about. He was building a freshwater casting rod with a Shimano SLX.

I heard recently that you are not supposed to grind the guide feet on Fujis, as this will mess up the anti corrosion coating on them. This supposedly includes BC grey amd CC silver coatings. Do anyone knows if this is true? And is grinding them necessary?

I saw a video recently where someone added weights to the butt of a rod to make it more balanced. He inserted some cylindrical weights to the butt end of the blank secured with pro kote paste. He inserted a 3/8 oz and 1 oz weights in the video. What are your thoughts on this method? Is this a legitimate thing?

What do you think of the idea of anodizing titanium materials in rodbuilding? Titanium guide frames, reel seats, etc? Anodizing can be done with a number of 9v batteries energizing the part in a solution. You can achieve different colors depending on the number of batteries used. I have no plans of doing this (no titanium parts), but I thought it might be an idea for other rod builders.

The placement is good enough. I had one that is further up away from the fore grip and on the side of the rod. Sometimes the line gets caught in it and it is a annoying hassle. I would fix that by moving it closer to the reel seat/ foregrip and positioned either on the top or bottom of the rod, not on the side. Which you seems to have done correctly in the picture. Also, it wouldn't be too c

For finishing rod guide wraps, can silicone brush be used sufficiently? Or will there be more harm than good?

Go to a retail store that sells fishing rods. Look for some Abu Garcia rods on sale, they should have a tag attached to them. They usually have a description about the guide type and material. I was at a Walmart the other day and looked at some. Some stated ring material either as titanium oxide or zirconium, if not aluminum oxide. Maybe you can find a Veritas rod on sale with the tag to find out

I had some rods with black guides. They are matted color black, not shiny. Including inside the ring. Ring material is non ceramic. After using them a while, they showed wear on the rings. The line wore out the black coating and the silvery metal underneath the coating is showing. They sucked and caused greater line wear and are very noticeably not smooth, which affected casting distance and on m

I see mentions of permagloss going off in the bottle. Does that means they have a limited shelf life and the unused portion can go bad?

I was able to find some motors that I had somewhere. 2 9v DC motors salvaged from a printer was rigged to a plastic gearbox that have 48:1 reduction gears. The output wheel now spins slowly enough to serve as a rod dryer. The torque is also quite solid. I now have to figure out how to connect the rod butt to it somehow, like a chuck. I will have to figure out how to make the other motor work as

Thanks for the info, Chris. I never heard of this concept before. Where can I find the Scotchbrite you mention? I've only seen the dark green pads for dishwashing in stores.

How would I go about using permagloss for rod finishing? The blanks are already painted and some old rods could use some refinishing. Do I clean them and apply directly, or is pre sanding with fine grit sandpaper required? Does the rod needs to turning for application and/or drying? How many rods will a 1 ounce bottle coat?

I removed the threads and guides and not only there was epoxy residue but also thead residue. I used a razor and scraped it up and down. I found the trick is to use zero downward pressure, only up and down in the thread area. Some, but tiny amounts, of the paint got chipped off either due to scraping or removing the guide foot. They are barely noticeable and may blend in with the other scrat

Don't dead lift it. Just fish with it and also bring a backup rod. The rod may or may not break. If it does, that just means the damage is irreversible and nothing can be done to fix it.

Also, how many thread wraps or rods would 2 oz bottles last for? Would it be enough for 5 rods with 8-9 guides?

When I started out, I did only repairs. I would salvage old guides from broken rods and wrap them on. Instead of wrapping with rod thread, I used old braided line. And finished them with JB weld 5 minutes epoxy. Before all that, that, I would use sewing thread and sloppily wrap home made wire guides and secured the wraps with some half hitches. Then used nail polish on the threads. It may not be

What is the difference between high build and low build? I am deciding between flex coat or U40 duragloss LS Supreme for thread finishing. Which is most preferred by builders? Since I don't have a drying motor, which epoxy would set the fastest? I think I will apply the thread finish and leave the rod turning on the finishing motor until it set well enough that I can take the rod off an

One of my rods have some coating or clear coat that is separating from the paint in some places. What is the best way to remove the coating without hurting the paint underneath? Scraping?

What is the best way to remove epoxy without damaging the paint underneath? I need to relocate some guides and they are not going back on the same place they were on. I would rather not have to repaint the rod.

I'm working on a 6 foot 4 medium heavy baitcaster. I'm trying to decide on guide sizes using Fuji LN and L frames. My options are: 6 (x4), 7, 8, 10, 12 6 (x4), 7, 8, 10, 16 6 (x3), 7, 8, 10, 12, 16 This decision would be much easier if a size 14 do exist. I know I am being too particular with this, but it can't be helped. What are your opinions or experiences on baitcasting guide siz

It took a while, but they finally responded: "The only other information for the guides is "smoke titanium colored frame with TiO2 insert". No vendor specified. You might try finding them online at places such as Mudhole, Jann's Net Craft and other rod component companies."

I never tried painting blanks like this before. But the first thing that comes to mind is a baby bottle. The nipple for the baby to feed on is like silicone or something strechy and durable. That might be a idea to test out. I seen The Fishing Hobby on YT use a baby bottle in a diy rod turning tutorial.

I am planning to use LN and L frame Fuji alconite guides for 2 baitcasting rods. I will need to find some alconite tip top for them as well. I looked on Get Bit Outdoors website and found a Fuji LG tip top that also comes in alconite. But looking at the picture, the ring seems to be a bit high. I want the guides to line up appropriately and I hope this tip doesn't cause a offset to the layout
