In my first go-round building rods, I had acquired a Dream Reamer set - loved them. I gave up the craft for several years and sold my equipment awhile back. Now that I'm back into it, I bought the CRB reamer set. Let's just say that I will be picking up the Dream Reamer set again ASAP. The CRB set is going into the trash. I've also gone the rat tail file route in the past, but the tapers and d

I know the LW610 uses the same tape cartridges as the PX800, and has the same pixel count. I think the print options, fonts/images/etc are more limited due to the interface being App based rather than a standalone program. I've wondered the same as you, and have yet to pull the trigger on any label device. I do know that Larry Tobin at LRT is a super top shelf guy, he's highly regarded for sur

Acetone has no place in my workshop - I can ruin just about anything in short order with that stuff!!! Agree with the idea to put a very thin coat of rod finish on and call it good.

RG recently published a little blurb on their FB page, the Carbon 5 and Bass 3 are both made in Park Falls, the other RG blanks are made at the St. Croix factory in Mexico.

From a freshwater perspective - no braid has ever cut into a ss guide. It’s an old wives tale….

Gen 4 has much less 'aroma' to my nose than any other epoxy I've used.

I use a motorized mixer, Gen4 epoxy, and apply directly from the cup while it’s still rotating in the mixer. Bubbles are a complete non issue for me - on the very rare occasion I do get one on a rod, it releases from the Gen4 in a few seconds (with no heat applied). The best part of this system is how incredibly consistent my results are. Also, my carpal tunnel likes that I’m not mixing by han

Redfish aren't exactly finesse fishing, so the choice of a higher modulus graphite should be based on a desire to save weight/casting fatigue, rather than a sensitivity gain. Most inshore anglers prefer a moderate fast to fast action, MH power rod in that 7-7'6" range. Too fast of an action is a recipe for losing fish (redfish and snook both). I know you probably aren't looking for

Obviously a very specialized case. The guy is looking to absolutely limit weight on the upper portion of the blank as much as possible, while also making it a simple process to quickly replace a guide. A coat or two of CP seems like a great treatment in his case. Clearly not jamming the rod into a bass boat rod locker and careening 20 miles down the lake strapped to a 300hp motor, then yanking

Kind of puts a nail in the coffin of the 'I build for performance, not aesthetics' people who I've always thought just use that as an argument for generic rods because they don't like to (or can't) bling up a rod a bit lol! I don't go crazy with bling on my builds, but strongly believe that crafting a unique, visually appealing rod is a big part of what brings people to a custom builder. Thank

Thanks Tom - the Batson blank I’m looking at is labeled as a crank bait rod - I was thinking that would be a bit faster than a flipping rod, but honestly I haven’t built much for bass-technique specific rods, so I’m unsure as to how they would compare, and possibly be applicable for a walleye crank bait trolling application. I think I may be trying to put a square peg into a round hole, but I’m

Looking for a lighter weight telescopic blank for a customer - trying to match with a cheap Scheels trolling rod that actually is a wonderful action and weight for inland walleye trolling. It’s 8’6” extended. He even likes it on Green Bay (Lake Michigan). Telescopic trolling blanks are scarce - Batson has their RX6/Eglass 8’0 blank. It seems to spec as too heavy in weight compared to the rod I’m

I don't do any geometric decorative wraps myself - I would think a chevron would be quick and easy. I much prefer the Throop/Tiger/Holo wraps. The time invested in one isn't bad at all - except you do have to account for more layers of finish than a standard wrap takes. You can lay down a base 2 color wrap in a few minutes, then put 2-3 coats of finish on it - then come back with the top wrap

not really a 'neon' blue - but the MH brand blue metallic is a really nice color. I agree - a true neon blue would be a really cool color to have!

I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that whatever the material is or way it's described, it's clearly the most important, game changing, revolutionary material ever developed for the fishing industry. Most of these materials were either used on a space shuttle or handed down by the Greek Gods themselves (or both)....

I just picked up two carbon 4 blanks from Rod Geeks at the factory in Park Falls (I live 30 minutes away). The blanks did not come with decals. Not a concern for me, as I always get a Decal Connection custom decal anyways - I don't want a factory decal look. The blanks themselves are great - top notch quality.

I know - and I actually get it on discount, and can drive 30 minutes to the St. Croix factory to pick it up with no shipping charges. I'm curious about trying an NFC blank though - and that's an action/power/length I'd be interested in

For people who have built on this SCV and are familiar with the NFC blanks - which model, if any, is very close to the SCV576MLXF?

I should have noted that I do the same as Roger on the bottom of the guide feet. I use a diamond hone, but same concept. Making sure that are no burrs to scratch the rod blank.

I use a dremel with stone grinding wheels. Works very well, and I find it much easier to use than my 1" belt sander. For small guides, I clamp onto the guide foot near the ring with a small hemostat for safety/access/grip. I've heard of people using the Work Sharp hand held mini belt sander with good results as well.

Hmm - may have to try this with the InstaPot! Seat should be nice and tender, and much faster than the oven.
