I am fixing to take the plunge and buy the complete renzetti lathe package. What I was wanting to know what other accessories would be recommended to go along with it? I plan only to do mainly wrapping on the renzetti with the possibility of doing some grip/handle touch ups. I really don't like doing cork or grip turning anywhere near my raw threads I am also looking at the jet midi lathe as wel

I kind of like the idea of a wrapping or rod building competition. I just don't think that it could be done in a day or two. I know that I put more time into a wrap that probably nessary but that's me. It would take some builders away from attending thier booths and giving quality time to show attendees. I would suggest that judging take place of rods built outside of the show and brought to the

I too stayed at the Atrium Inn with no problems other than having to drive a couple of block to get to the showplace. Next year I will be staying at the Radission to join in on the excitment there. As soon as Tom sets the show dates for 2008 I will be making my reservations. Thanks Tom for putting on a show of this caliber..and also for your time. Thad Peach Dutchman's Creek Tackle

maderia poly neon #40 has so many options in colors is why I think that it is used more often. And they are usually cheaper than regular rod building threads. You can use just about any threads just as long as you use poly (polyester)threads. Just make sure that it does not have any silicon lubricant added to the thread. The silicon will affect the epoxy thread finish. Also stay away from rayon i

I was planning on buying several internationals and I was trying to make my mind up using Avets. I guess that it is now made up don't want to take the chance. You get what you pay for and I don't mind paying extra for service.

You might look at some of the gaff blanks or rock cod blanks that are available. The center riggers that I use are of alluminum and have a I-bolt at both ends in which a glass ring is attached for the 400lb pull line and a release clip is attached to that.

Sounds like he was trying to salvage the wreck. Was he using spectra line? That is one of the culprits of using the super lines just no give. I used to work on head boats/party boats and I have seen a few rods break when they tried to pull the plug out of the ocean and high sticked the rod. The rod would break in several pieces and all were graphite rods. Most of them broke down the the shutoff p

I second the general fishing show. I build mostly saltwater rods and I do build saltwater fly rods also. I would think that a general fishing show would attract a larger number of people from all aspects of fishing. just my thoughts

I am only aware of aftco making "wind-on roller guides". The others that would accomadate the larger knots are more costly as you probably are aware of. The aftco sizes that you have listed only the 47 and 22 are wind-on guides the 32 is a shd model (super heavy duty). You can save yourself some cash by reducing the size of one of the 32s to a 22. You only need to get the line down to t

I believe they do this to skip the guide foot prep for the thread to climb up on and or give a background for the thread. I have seen colored tape as well as clear. Saves them time therfore cost. I don't see any benifit other than that and may be a problem with the guide foot moving under the thread and harming the blank if not underwrapped. I myself would not try to repeat it I have seen it a co

I pop the finish out because I can. I do let a little build up occur before I pop it off though.. makes it easier for it to come off at one time...

If you are using this rod on a longrange party boat and need to come out of your harness and work around other anglers the hypalon on a blank through construction will be eaiser to hold on to while going over and under other anglers. The uni-butts are harder to hold on to while doing this. Like Tom said they are designed to break down. They also make it eaiser for them to be removed from rod hold

I use clear glass ash trays. They have the slot to hold my brush and after any finish sets up peels right off. So I don't have to clean them with anything. I think that I have found the best use for the ash tray Since I don't smoke... I would think that any type of glass saucer would work. I did try some minature glass flower pots but they were hard to get the stuff to peel out. The larger ashtra

As Tom said bring your wives as well as your girl friends. They seemed to take the bulk of the give-a-ways at the last show...LOL... Keep up the good work Tom looking forward to the next show. Thad

If you order late in the day and request 2nd day air then your order may not be shipped until the following day which would delay an order. I usually use the 3 day service and sometimes I get it within two days. I always ask for a tracking number regardless. I can then see where and how my package is moving on the carriers website.

I just got through building myself a couple of Calstar rods one stand up and one 7' live bait rod. I took 8 dolphin (mahi mahi) and 7 king mackrel with that rod and so far it has not lost a fish yet. The dolphin were in the 15 to 20 lb range and the kings were in the just a little smaller. I have caught plenty of fish like these and larger on rods bought from a store but Its the satifaction of ma

I am looking for gimbal covers for my gimbals on my Calstar stand up rods that I am building. I have tried some of the rubber butt caps just a little smaller than the diameter of the gimbals and they were to hard to get off and a matter of fact I had to cut them off. The gimbals in question are AFTCO sizes AG2R and AG3R.

Don't forget about Uncle Sams Excise tax even if you only charge for just the cost of the parts the sportfishing excise tax has to be paid. Check out the back issue of Rodmaker Magazine volume 7 issue #3 page 24. Tom Kirkman also did a great seminar on the subject at the show in Charlotte this year I hope he will do another one next year. Thad

Good photo now I know exactly where it is. Wondered what that building was when I drove by. Guess I have it pretty good then I had the Charlotte show in my lap and now I will have to make a short worthwhile drive up to the northeast on a popular interstate. Keep up the good work Thad

Most of the time I take a deposit to cover some if not all the cost of components of building a rod just for insurance that the customer will come back to pick up the rod. I sometimes will forego the deposit if I have a returning customer that I have built a relationship with. I also have at the bottom of my build up sheet that I use to list what the customer wants a warning that any rods not pic
