Definitely clarify what water he is fishing there and his techniques. Last trip I nymphed in the rhododendrons and then used the NFC 4 wt glass and Gamma Alpha. All smaller water The GA is much more moderate and smooth casting to me than the GB or classic. I am going to order a couple rodgeeks blanks to try.

Thanks for the links. Ordered volume 21.3 for use as a reference It seems most Florida party boats are recommending 8’ rods in order to use the rail and keep the line off the boat. I did see one company advertise a SPJ rod that can use the rail for fighting. The rail and the sumo squat is helpful to us old folks. I have never fished the head boats as opposed to a 6 pack. Have a couple fam

The Batson extreme do get some love on the tuna forums. There is a recent video of a west coast shop comparing bends on a couple entry rods followed by the rainshadow (I think the build on it for shop rods) and then US composites and a Calstar(?). Lifting a 25lb weight. There are some other comparisons of bend profiles of seeker, UC, calstar. A bit of lightness vs durability, graphite vs composi

Have a request for deep drop jig and slow jig rods from a relative for head boat trips (pulley ridge, Yankee Captain etc) Rail fishing. 30-60 lbs classes. Slow pitch jigs are 2-400 grams. Depths from 200-1000. Typically fish 6-10oz weights for bait. Initial thought is a Calstar 800H or MH for standard jig and bait. For slow pitch, not too many longer blanks out there aa the Capt recommend

As a consumer, would you accept a custom build on an obviously crooked blank and as a builder would you even offer it? Those are always my thoughts when getting blanks that veer from the path.

The older Rainshadow Inshore Popping series are pretty fun blanks for BFS. They have ultralight to MH. Getting more fond of the softer graphite as I age. If you have good casting reels, try a roro bfs spool. I put one in my Zillion and it has become my go to light inshore with 10lb braid.

Thanks guys. picked up an extra 12 and a 10 from voodoo and will do some test casting. On a side note, while playing with the lengths, I took an NFC APFG 710-1 and cut a whopping 2’ off it. My wife came through and promptly claimed it for trout. Back to the drawing board we go. :)

Sorry Roger, was making a joke about the damage a youngster can cause. Should have said a 4 year old tornado;) Agree on weather, many moons ago, we beached the boat due to a huge thunderstorm that came in. Way to rough to attempt the launch. As we hit the beach towards the tree line, a bolt hit, knocking us off our feet. My ears rang for a year. Thanks Spencer,I had never heard of an under

Looking at building a few 5’ UL for the next gen. My question is how low can you go on guides as they are going back and forth from spinning and spin casting at this age. And trying to get guide height as low as possible to minimize damage from tornados. Panfish and trout. How much distance is lost going from a 16h to something like a 12 or even a 12 casting guide to runners. Not trying t

I use the RV6 unless it is a large diameter blank (or budget build) as it looks funky to me. Then I will use KW 10,8, 8(6) to size 5 kb and kt runners.

For 6’s and under, I just go with a DT line anymore. Longer leader for dries. The line specialization has gone nuts and with the prices it is tough to experiment. If you have a good shop that will let you test cast lines, go for it. I use SA frequency or 406 fly lines.

6-6” is fine. I fish a 6-8 for bfs style in the kayak often. Throwing zman trd on a 1/32 or 1/16 bonefish jig. Diawa Zillion (bfs spool added) with 8/10 braid to spooky redfish. The lighter spools are money. I stay with 5-5.5 torzites, upsize one for regular.

Most of the popping blanks are in the ML-M and typically MF-F. In a yak, I like a more mod (not XF) for ease of landing. Just need a stiff enough top to not drive you nuts working the lure. I slow roll spoons, so it isn’t a factor. AmTac matrix 6-12 or 8-14 NFC P704 Point Blank ML To name just a few.

Don’t disagree. But it is what he likes…. I sent him 6wt Gamma Alpha, Beta and Classic for eval. I haven’t built any lighter FAF blanks other than ESN.

Had a relative ask for a couple fly builds similar to Recons. I’ve never fished a recon and wondered if anyone had any guidance? Thanks, Tim Edit: never mind, I just shipped him some different 6wts to compare. The old fashioned approach:)

12-8-1’s is what I have been using on 5/6 lately . If using fuji style stripper, I like 12-6-1’s. Just finished a 5wt Gamma Beta with 12-8-6 cerecoils to the tip. Casts nice but we will see on durability

Haven’t fished wahoo in a few years. My old rod was a Connely and it was 7’. Tip was fairly sensitive and I believe it was an 80lb rod for planers. Ended up selling it so I can’t get the specs from the label.

I’ve used the Fuji gunsmoke SIC for a couple recent builds. Pretty nice and cost savings. The AT tiForged are reasonable but I don’t have any long term tests with them. I just did a SJ804 with KW 10-8- 6’s to tip and a 6.5 tip. 30lb braid to 30 leader with an older Komodo 364. It is a nice setup. I really like the tactile feel of the NFC solftouch grips. I really hope they expand the line.
