I never expected this to go five pages. WOW! Anyway, I finished the rod and got it in the hands of a very happy young man. Threw in a hand skirted flippin jig with a live rubber skirt to go with it. He requested some pro wrap metallic braid for trim. I have learned to hate working with that stuff. It is too wide. Managed to get the desired look he wanted though.

I have used NFC carbon soft touch and love them. They feel great. Very light and easy to work with as well. They have built in arbors that are easy to ream. Just ream carefully. It is easy to over ream.

Unless I have added a label or something that needs finished over I would only finish over the trim wraps.

And ideal builds with typical handles on high end rods are balanced without weight. This specific instance is about a high end light rod with a short customized handle. IMO the short handle is a mistake but the customer is always right. So how do I rectify the feel/balance? Add a touch of weight. Otherwise IMO it would not manipulate well in the hands of the angler who is also young and not fully

As the wave of vibration initiates down the glass it will be unaffected by the weight until it gets to the weights. Then the dampening will alter the frequency as it travels through the glass. The initial tap will still have an identical magnitude with or without weights when measuring at the stem where you would hold it.

If the wraps are tight against the grips you could marble the whole area and add wraps once dried. Then finish your wraps.

Joel, Thank you. The angler I am building for is very similar in stature to you. That is why this is the first one I have had to add a weight to. I have built 8 other flipping/pitching rods but all for me at 6'2" and two other anglers who are both over 6'. The tournament anglers are tough and great customers at the same time. Tough because they know exactly what they want and great b

If I balance my rod with a 3/8 jig on the end I will do so with my jig sitting on bottom. So yes a 3/8 oz jig tied on the line does not mean I am applying 3/8oz of weight to my tip. When the jig is free falling through the water column you are not supporting the weight with your rod because it is falling on slack line. Will there be weight when I move the bait? yes. But to try and balance for tha

On the cast you are always one hand. I personally have a finger touch the line and a finger on the rod but no foregrip. I just taper the reel seat down or use a unilock style hood. Pitching my off hand moves to the reel to reel up prior to the set. Flipping I will use it for the initial set and go straight to the reel. Neither of those scenarios to I hold any weight in my off hand. Just extra fee

Of all the builds I have made for this application I have never needed weight added. Due to angler needs for a short handle, as noted in OP, I determined in a mock up it was necessary for comfort. Weight is not always the enemy.

With big jigs and flipping plastics you don't want a full slack line fall. With jigs especially they will get hit on the fall. If it falls full slack and gets inhaled you are more likely to miss the bite. Experienced anglers will go for a hook set when the fall is taking too long. So controlling the line on the fall to keep it just shy of taught is what the pros are doing that make it look like t

Logically being balanced for pitching makes sense on gaining distance in casting because less effort is required to put speed in the tip. Accuracy, in flipping specifically, I find to be dependent upon comfort and decreased effort. The harder I work flipping the more I miss. And flipping success can be greatly impacted by missing 2" targets on the first attempt. So I can see the reasoning be

David, Thanks for the share. I was avoiding things that would make certain people turn this thread into an argument about accuracy and distance data. There are a lot of factors beyond weight distribution that balance effects for sure. Usually I am able to achieve the balance I personally prefer with just my standard length handle and no added weight. I may experiment though thanks to your pos

Phil, It is to reduce fatigue. Flipping and pitching is a constant cast retrieve technique. The casting can be quite awkward in some situations as well. You almost never have two hands on the rod during the various casts. It is very close quarters so distance is not a factor and accuracy is in the skill of the angler. For additional clarity flipping and pitching is summed up as underhand lo

The rod is a 7'4". I guided them toward this rod for balance. A normal grip length would likely work out well. They came by to test fit the mock up handle. The angler liked the shorter handle. So I thank you all for your valued inputs. I had a tungsten weight perfect for the job and it really worked perfectly. Thank you all so much.

Phil, I am not balancing for ad speak or marketing. As a custom rod builder I do not market stock rods and rarely market at all. The balance of a flipping rod is not a null balance centered on the hand as you refer to. Generally it is butt heavy and tip light as it will be fished prolonged amounts of time with heavy baits in one hand. Much like a jigging rod for salmon. I have used specific rods

Thank you all for the ideas. I normally would do a longer handle but the young man was set on a certain length. I think someone go into his ear about rods being too long and catching clothing. I tried to educate him that when flipping and pitching the rod does not get hung up like it would when working a jerkbait. But an order is an order. So an 8" handle is what he will get. I like the idea

What are some of the ways you have added weight to the butt of the rod without being conspicuous? I am building a flipping stick for a young man in the junior division and he needs a shorter handle. So I need to add weight but he does not want the adjustable weighted butt cap. Thank you in advance. Aaron Petersen

That is why I was asking. Line type, line weight, lure type, lure weight and other non rod factors play a big role.

Mo, The comparison of lighter blanks in the same line is not representing the ratio of "stiffness to weight." Lighter, or better said, lower CCS/AA numbered rods are not the same stiffness as the higher numbered CCS/AA rods in that same line. What is being discussed is two rods with identical CCS/AA numbers but one weighs 5oz and the other way 4oz. Same stiffness but different stiffn

All, I was planning on starting a spiral last weekend but should have known better. Family came first. I have decided to try a Cagey Hook first. Kent G, Thank you so much for all the info and guidance. I look forward to working with you through the process.

If only that was how it worked. Nothing is pushed in a cast on spinning/casting setup. Watch a slo mo of a cast, a hockey shot, or a golf swing. Same principal. The bait is not released when the rod is fully bent. The unbending (unloading) of the rod adds acceleration to the mass at the end of the line. When you free the line the bait pulls line from the reel. Nothing pushes.

Thank you for the answers. Currently I am leaning toward the Cagey Hook method due to being so well documented on the boards by Kent. Since I have three I may try that, Tom's, and Norm's style of spirals and see what feels best to me. I have never fished a spiral rod so I am excited.
