181. Re: ice rod help
I built a couple for my buddy in Chicago. They were 39" so I used 5 guides. What Roger said is what I would do on the 36". The reel seat needs some research. Ask your friend to send some pics of his ice rods with closeups of the seats. Seafoam and hot pink looks pretty nice for ice. Wrap the blank section just before the tip with 3/4" of hot pink for low light conditions. Gott

Thanks, John. Have you ever had the issue I described while testing your product? I applied the second coat on all three of those rods between 4 and 5 hours of applying the first coat. 72 degrees F indoors.

My theory is that the second coat on a nearly, but not fully cured first coat inhibits the exothermic reaction of first coat thus not allowing the gasses and heat energy to dissipate in order to complete the process. Exothermic reactions are technically an evaporation.
Billy, I became a believer in accurate epoxy measurements about a year ago so I don't think it could be that problem.

185. The Hard Way
Recently started having issues with curing the thread epoxy. After learning the hard way that you actually do need to be precise with the measurements of 2-part thread epoxy, I didn't have any issues for a long time.
Now I found out the hard way that the first coat needs to be totally cured before applying the finish coat. Had three rods in a row with sticky epoxy that just wouldn't cure 1

We need one of our mechanical engineer board members to create an "Iron Byron" similar to the contraption that the PGA uses to measure ball and club parameters. Maybe we could call it the "Phiberglass Phil" ;)

I just applied 2 different decals on the same rod. One decal was applied over black D thread on top of two coats of epoxy. The other was applied over a light blue/grey D thread over one coat of CP. Both came out great with no issues. I needed to find out which works best for me.
I have learned the hard way that using heat to smooth out the epoxy lifts the edges of the decals. Avoid this m

I bought two Black Hole 8' blanks for tuna. They build a rod with their specs. They gave me the build sheet upon request that included Fuji guide part numbers as well as the Fuji reel seat and the EVA grips. They sell their build for over $600. I've got under $350 in the same rod.
I used the guide spacing provided on the sheet and after seeing this post decided to test a smaller ring size

Heres one for you Phil. I tested 25# mono vs. 50# PowerPro. The guide spacing used was to mfg specs.
First test 25# mono with Fuji MN/alconite guides 40,30,25,30,16, 8 tip
Results: 108 feet.
First test 50# PowerPro same fuji guides and sizes
Results: 118 feet
Second test 25# mono with the fuji guides 30,20,16,12,10, 8 tip
Results: 105 feet
Second test 50# PowerPro same fuji

I love cork and use it on every build except for offshore rods. I haven't mustered up the nerve to go with carbon fiber yet.

Cork isn't always the best option. Its not very often that you'll see an offshore rod with cork. Its usually EVA. Very few of them are low dollar and cheaply made.

Thanks, Norm. I am building one 7'6 and the other 8'0. I will use the 40,30, 25,30,16 on the 7'6 and then the Kr starting with 25 on the 8'. We will see which one is actually the best.

I think you're right, Norm. Mine calls for five guides. 40 at 29" then 30, 25, 20, 16 then the tip. Mfg specs.

I'm building two tuna poppers also that called for mnsg guides. Couldn't find them so I emailed Fuji. They said they will no longer be making them.

Like golf clubs. I bought a nice set of Taylor Made irons and metal woods about 5 years ago after playing with knock offs for 20 years. Result.......I still suck.

Black Hole builds and sells this exact set up for experienced tuna fishermen around the world. No need to reinvent the wheel. These rods will be for a 38' Freeman fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. They target and land many pelagic species such as 800# blue marlin, 80# wahoo, 560# bluefin tuna, 600# mako shark, 300# grouper, and of course yellowfin tuna. The captain and crew have every type of blu

Thanks, Mark. I'm building the rod to Black Hole specs. The build sheet has a 20 seat as well as rear and fore grip sizes. It also has the guide spacing included. YFT up to 200#. but most likely 50-80# on a top water plug.

On the mock-up the blue trim ring looks soooo much better in the up locking position. I've always fished and built with the down locking position so I'll probably go with that. The 6500 spinning reel barely fits into the seat with the nut all the way up so when screwed down only about 3/4" of the thread is showing. The main reason for the question was that I was thinking the reel would b

Should I go uplocking or downlocking on the size 20 Fuji graphite spinning reel seat. Its going on a Black Hole 8' blank for large yellowfin tuna.

203. Re: Wrap strength
Ok, so I am building two Black Hole Nano tuna popping rods. They will be tested on 150# plus yellowfin and who knows what else these guys will put the rod through. Should I double wrap with A then D? Normally when I double wrap, I'll use A then a coat of Permagloss to help the D slide easily when packing. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Like Tim said, more flex and slower action paired with the stretch of mono makes it more difficult for a bass to pull off or throw the trebles during a jump.

Built for a Marine veteran buddy of mine. Its a LMX Delta MB-703-1 North Fork Fast/Medium blank with titanium guides and a few adornments. Dark red and gold threadwork. Small price for me to pay for the price of freedom.

When you slap at the worm are you actually making contact or is the pressure wave from the water movement moving the lure?
