I've already said I am a huge fan of older vintage stradics... but Shimano has been hiding a secret in plain sight for those who can see it... can you tell which one of these is the stradic and which one is not? The reason I am showing both schematics of 2 shimano spinning reels is because they show a Shimano production secret not well known or known at all outside of rod and reel shop

There is another issue with newer stradics and other Shimano spinners... today if you rust up a line roller bearing, you have to now replace the line roller and the bearing. It is now one part. In my older stradics, I could slide the bearing out of the line roller and just replace the bearing, but not any more. Now you can have a perfectly good line roller with a bad bearing and have to replace b

I'm not saying they are crappy. But when you sit at a bench Monday through Friday and sometimes Saturday and see a lot of newer stradics come across the bench needing the aluminum gear replaced to make it smooth again in reels less than 2 years old- and on a very regular almost daily basis, I'd have to say it is problematic at the least. Keep in mind we have guys who will buy a small stradic and

You can upgrade and install carbon fiber drag washers which will last in this mech. But it will still have soft aluminum main drive gear issue, so heavy load fishing will wear them out faster. Low load fishing will take longer. Keep in mind I saw these reels in the shop on a daily basis. When we stock those soft aluminum gears we bought them in large quantities like 20 or 30 or 40 at a time so we

Yes they are nice reels, but as a former Shimano reel tech I avoid the newer stradics because of the drag mech. My older stradic drag washers last forever. The newer ones can be chewed up in a year or so. Shi

So when trying to cast one, the level wind line guide is also moving from

I post this thread as a curiosity to see where custom rod building members of this forum stand on this issue. For me, I am nearly 60 years old so I have been fishing since the late 1960's and I have lived through many phases of the fishing tackle changes over the years and decades and I have seen things come and go and some stick around. And it is precisely all those years- my younger years

I love U.S. made Falcon rods... been using them for decades and thankfully I have never had one snap on me, but the following video haunts me! Though it is not on a hook set... But this rod snapping opens the door to blank design which has changed over the years. This Falcon Buccu series is what is known as a thin wall blank which were a warranty nightmare to rod companies. Today, thin wall bl

Tip guide takes all or most of that hook setting force. The guides down the blank do not experience side pulling loads like that tip does. The guide closest to the tip will experience the next highest load pull, but it is a mere fraction of what the tip experiences when setting the hook. And this loading force on the guides gets progressively less with each guide moving closer to the reel. If

Or, rotate middle section to 90 degree on either side and tip section to 180 degrees. This way he can have spiral wrap and conventional all in one rod.

You can spiral wrap any rod. The next question would be what method of spiral wrapping would you choose to go with? One thing I would be concerned about is consistent guide alignment, so I would mark the blank pieces in some way so that assembly can be more accurate every time.

Doing a search on this forum pulls a posted comment by Ralph O'Quinn who says it like this: Re: History of the Robert's Wrap... Posted by: Ralph O'Quinn (---.pstbbs.com) Date: May 04, 2003 06:36PM John S. Scanlan of Chicago patented the spiral wrap in 1909. It is the only patent of record. He/she... never met a 'he' named Joy! Ooops! But the point I was making was that Joy learned it from Chuck Roberts and coined it the Robert's wrap. Is this correct? Did this Joy Dunlap create his own method of spiral wrapping distinctly different or, was Joy's method one and the same as a Robert's wrap? I am not clear on this point. I keep reading across the web how this Joy Dunlap pers

And I greatly appreciate you adding it to the mix Tom! I am already getting calls and emails from across the country on it. It is gratifying to know that others see the merit of the results, and are wanting to build their own rods trying to achieve similar results for themselves. And Tom, I sure wish there was one single place where all of the various methods you mentioned could be viewed a

I have been asked in several emails how to construct a Cagey Hook Wrap, and all I can say is it is in the article. Ask Tom for a copy of the magazine or email me as I am presently working on a more detailed "technical manual" type of approach to this build. It is not something that can just be laid out or guides set at predetermined angles. This method follows straight path line flow

I may start some heated discussion on this, but basically there are 2 sides to custom rod building. There are custom rod builders who are into creating high performance fishing rods, and then there are custom rod builders who care more about looks and art than performance. And this subject of wrapping an entire rod falls into the latter category. To me it is a useless thing to do to a rod. Not on
