Tom...I read that study. It decreases it by very little. They did 50 rods...25 on spine and 25 off. No blanks could be produced exactly the same (verbatim). I am really baffled that this is such a hot issue with some people. If you like building on the spine..do it. If you like to build the straightest axis..do that. I simply thought it would of interest to people to see how the "best"

That's fine Phil. I'm not in any way trying to sway builders one way or another. I build on a spine now but if I found most big name makers built solely on the straightest axis I would maybe consider changing. I'm not doing this to make any body mad but it seems some are getting that way and I am confused. This is a sight to learn and share ideas and techniques. If I were building for customers a

thanks Tom, I was waiting to hear back from them. Now just waiting for Loomis. I agree...to each his own. I would like to come to a solid conclusion on how and why the majority of the best makers do it. So far Sage and according to you, St. Croix don't spine their rods and Winston, CTS and Scott spine theirs. I like gathering the info and seeing who does what.

Just heard back from Scott. They do "backbone" (as he put it) their rods.

I just spoke with a guy from Winston yesterday. He was adamant that they spine their rods when building. Think his name was Sawer. Also got an email from co-owner of CTS..they spine their rods. She said they have a digital spiner. Waiting for Loomis and Scott and St. Croix. I'm pretty sure this won't make a difference to a lot of people but I am interested to find out how the best do it. Sage doe

I believe it was/is Roger Seiders or Seigers...something like that. He's from Texas. His kids started Yeti coolers. I have talked to him...very nice, pleasant guy.

I have emailed a few of the top rod building companies and heard back from one...Sage. I asked how they deal with the "spine" when building their rods. His answer was..."what spine? ;). He said they don't deal with it at all. They look down each section with some "well trained" eyes and determine the absolute straightest line and build on that. That's big for me...I have

Tom, I was not trying to argue with you. I don't know if that's why you didn't respond. That was a very sincere question. I love to learn and we learn by asking questions. Any body...considering the spine is the weakest area of a blank...If the straightest axis and the spine happen to be the same, where do you hang the guides so the rod is not weak? Also...if anyone already knows, how do the best

Here's a thought I just had regarding this issue. Does anybody know for sure how Loomis, Sage, Winston, CTS and others build? Do they build on the spine or straightest axis or just random. If I knew all or most of these builders built a certain way...I'd most likely change. When you know the best rod makers in the world are doing something...I most likely would follow. Any of you know what crite

That's interesting to me. Then what if the straightest axis and the spine match up? Where do you build? I would really have to read more than one study to be a believer. To see where the majority stands and even then figure out in my own mind. I mentioned I am an old nurse. Over 40 Years of working I have read many, many studies on medications, heart attacks, surgeries and I have seen total turn

I have found roadbuilding to be very individualized. Many builders have their "best way" to do the different steps of building. As far as finding or building on the spine or the straightest "axis" of the blank... this also seems to be very individualized. My opinion is based on mine as well as other peoples opinion. I build on the spine. The reason is, if there is a spine (and

When you all build a quality high end rod, what hook keeper do you tend to use? I am building a rod now and using REC titanium running guides and fuji titanium strippers with sic inserts. I also used a nickel silver winding check. I haven't been able to find a titanium or nickel keeper. REC has a titanium keeper but it is a single foot type with a ring. I realize it's not a big deal and perhaps a

Hi Guy, I feel your questions and confusion. I was self taught by using google and youtube. When I googled a question, more times than not, I was referred to this site. After many years of looking to roadbuilding.org I joined up. There is so much knowledge here and great, helpful people as well. I watched the flex coat video on mixing and applying epoxy. I have never had it fail by mixing and app

I don't know what you mean when you said you ," tie a small loop" in the thread. I just use a piece of thread and lay the natural loop that's form when I put both ends of the pull through thread together. There is no tying necessary. Maybe I am not understanding.

Personally, I like my tips tops to fit...not be sloppy. They should slip on the rod tip easily but not sloppy with a lot of spare room. I just sliver off some tip top glue, put the slivers in the tube, heat til the glue bubbles and then push and hold the tip top. Never lost a top yet. I would go with the 2.2mm if your rod tip measures 2mm. I almost always buy a tip top above and below the rod tip

Roger, the link of the picture of brushes you sent looks very similar to the flex coat brushes. I would for sure use those if there are no problems with chemicals such as silicone or other that would mess up the finish. Have you ever had an issue with your finishes while using these brushes? Thanks.

I agree with Roger and I haven't even used the fresh build I completed. I found a 7' 4wt, 4 piece S glass fly rod blank and built a spinning rod. It has a very sloppy feel to it and I haven't used it yet. It feels like it will be a very slow action. It looks real nice though. I will try it to see how it is but I'm betting one of my kids or grandkids will own it soon.

Mudhole has some gold guides with aconite inserts. I used some of their red guides on a spinning rod build and I liked them. I was wrong...just went to muddle site. They have ceramic inserts...Hialoy?. I used the red guides with zirconia inserts. They were nice but not in gold.
