Re: Spine or straightest axis? Posted by: Tom Kirkman (Moderator) Date: January 21, 2023 07:41AM "You cannot compare golf shafts to fishing rods in terms of what they do in actual use. Bending or flexing a rod by hand or via a mechanical device and finding the spine effect in no way replicates a real world fishing situation." I am not comparing them in use, but in how as tubes,

It depends on the value and performance of the blank you build on, the value and quality of the components, and your craftsmanship. Much of the differentiation or value in a custom rod is how you can "customize" it with components and wraps that the customer, or you, desire. I will speak to fly rods, as that is what I know. You can buy a good TFO fly rod, such as a Blue Ribbon, f

Golf shafts and fishing rod shafts have what is known as a "spine" due to the way they are produced, and one may think of it as they may. Here is an excellent video on the subject in regard to golf shafts: The golf shaft or fishing blank is not perfectly round and, thus, will have a stable plane, in golf called its FLO, for flat line oscillation, and can be determined by osci

While I am not advocating for it, I have seen the clear used on rod wraps in place of traditional epoxies. The only Gorilla Glue I have used is their two part epoxy, and I have used it in making golf clubs (adhering the shaft to the club head) and fly rods (adhering cork handle and real seat to the blank) without any issues, though I much prefer an epoxy with a longer set up time. bambo

You would want to use Clear Gorilla Glue, not the regular stuff.

"If you "sand" with a wet piece of scotchbrite they're isn't any dust." That you can see. Granted it will minimize things greatly. As Alex said of NFC: "We use a fully enclosed ventilation system and only wet sand."

I am building out an NFC LMX 9' 5wt rod currently. The look of the ridges does not bother me, in fact, I kind of like the look (I thought I might dislike it when buying on line.) And they only provide a minor difference in wrapping Size A thread, as it will slide a little less easy when starting a wrap and getting it lined up straight. After a few wraps you get it down. I don't think I co

Alex: What type of ferrule is on these blanks, if any? Or does one need to put on metal ferrules as on bamboo? Also, are these blanks finished in terms of a protective coating, or must some type of varnish be applied as in bamboo? Thanks.

Charging by task is a good idea: For labor you could charge by the: Wrap (including epoxying there of) -- more if their are additional colors and intricacies. I would consider double foot guides to have two wraps, and there is also a wrap at each end of 3 pieces of a 4 piece rod (though some combine guide). Wrap for hook keeper. Reel Seat -- for assembling and epoxying it on the blank

A recent high end blank I purchase was touted as 38 grams, my $30 kitchen digital scale measured it at 41. Close enough for me. If you paid more than $100 for the blank I would ask the blank maker or seller.

Herb: Thanks. I now see on their site that Recoil says sue the light weight for 0-4 weight rods. Do you find the Recoils to be noisy at all? Some say the hum a bit as the line zips through them.

Yes, if un-sanded such as the LMX fly rod I am now working on, you may want to lay down a layer of epoxy and put the decal on top of that.

More than 10% out of spec seems a bit high to me. I would ask the rod maker them how much variation they think is acceptable or they tolerate?

I am building a 9' 6wt fly rod from a very light blank. I wish to use Recoil single foot fly rod guides. Should I use the RSF (lightweight) or RSFX (standard/heavy duty/salt) guide. I read on one site that you should use the RSF (lightweight) only for rods up to 4wt. Thoughts or experiences?

I suggest you go to some shops and look at OEM rods and see what type of aesthetics you prefer in terms of reel seats, grip types and shapes, thread colors, etc. Of course costs can vary greatly for components, as can the component's weight. If you have never wrapped a fly rod before, I would not start with single foot guides but use double foot snake guides. There are more wraps but likel

I've never met a guide foot that hasn't needed some filing or shaping to make the task easier, especially those for used for the thinnest section of the rod. A vice is a great tool to have, but if you do not want to invest in that, some good needle nose pliers will work, or two of them. You can shape the foot cheaply with sand paper or emery cloth, but that takes a lot more time than a fine f

Yeah, if my reel is 5 ounces, that's 142 grams, so I guess 5 extra grams of real seat weight will not amount to much.

I am building a 9 ft. 6 wt. Epic fly rod -- the 690G. The blank is a mere 1.34 ounces, or 38 grams, so super light for a 6wt. I am wondering how much the weight of the reel seat will matter? I have a Struble real seat that weighs 21 grams, and an American Tackle real seat that weighs 28 grams, and another that weighs only 18 grams. I am not sure what the typical real seat for a 6 wt. rod we

I have guide foot adhesive I purchased from Mud Hole. I tried to use it on Pac Bay Ti Chrome single foot guides. I used a lighter to heat the guide foot, pressed it into the adhesive stick, and got zero results when trying to adhere it to an Batson Enternity2 fly blank. Multiple attempts failed. I wonder if it was my ineptness, the type of paint on the cobalt colored blank, or the Ti Chrome f

I live in Colorado and would recommend 9 ft length, and not 8' 6". There are many fine blanks, and it is a matter of what type of fishing you prefer and what type of rod action you like the most. You can get fine blanks from: North Fork Composites CTS Batson Rainshadow Winston Mud Hole Rod Geeks Epic to name a few.

I agree that many a Pac Bay offering is no longer available at a number or reputable on-line vendors. Either the supply chain issue has disproportionally hit them hard, they are revamping their business, or they are in overall trouble. They have not put out a new catalog since Oct. 23 of 2019.

One of the many social media ills (or evils) is that as a result of perceived distance (lack of face to face or direct dialog), anonymity or perceived personal opinion empowerment, a certain percentage of people feel enabled or emboldened to post uncivil or inappropriate statements or comments. It's really too bad and is one of the major drivers, in my opinion, of the divided and divisive state

I do not see it as cancel culture. Civil commentary, articulate criticism or level headed debate is one thing, vituperative language intended to be hurtful or slanderous is another.

Dirty laundry is best kept and dealt with in the washing machine, as far as I am concerned. I worked for a Fortune 1000 consumer products company for 30 years. The fact is that product defects can or do happen and once in a while can be missed by QC, but it is also a fact that some consumers are simply over the top, disrespectful and want to make public their grievance or anger, and blame the
