I just finished a NFC CB Delta 7115 for this exact purpose. Have not used it for this task yet but first impression is good. Soft top 1/4 of the rod transitions nicely into a stout mid section and powerful bottom section. Caught several lake trout on it last weekend and it whipped them quickly

I bought a sj732 nearly 3 years ago anticipating a “light” action for the same technique your after. Needless to say the blank sat in the corner till this year when i built it in casting configuration to flatline troll crankbaits. It is rated very strange in my opinion as it almost seems to be a mag-bass taper with a lighter tip section. Definitely more backbone then the Sj703. I built a P702 hm

NFC x-ray SJ 703 is my go to for 1/4oz -3/8oz. It will handle up to 1/2oz in my experience. Great walleye rod and I believe they are currently on sale. Also have a SB-724. That one is suitable for 3/8-3/4oz jig/plastic or minnow

The 7ft NFC P702 HM would probably fit that bill. I built one recently for light jig/minnow applications for walleye. Seems about right to me for 1/8-maybe 1/4oz jigheads. I also have used a ML St. Croix 7ft scv for years. The P702 is approximately the same action maybe a touch faster but one level down in power

That sounds about right to me. Many people grip the stem of the spinning reel almost like a pencil. The split between the butt and grip rests in the crotch between the thumb and forefinger

Keep an eye on NFC’s website. They run major discounts sometimes. Their SJ-703 is an excellent walleye stick.

Scott If I could ask, what are the heaviest weights you have pulled with these blanks? Also what size tip top did you use? It is not listed on NFC’s site Thanks much Brian

Looking for recommendations on a NFC blank for dragging bottom bouncers with crawler harness for walleyes. Rod will be built in casting configuration but will be used for trolling, no casting. Bouncer weighs will be 1oz to possibly 3oz depending on depth. Trolling speed will be relatively slow 1.2-1.5 mph. Was considering a MB 736 or possibly MB 7108. I know sensitive is a relative word but look

I myself just received 2-SB 724’s that will be built in spinning configuration. Put one on my kitchen scale and it reads 1.5oz. Seems to be an incredibly light blank for the amount of power it seems to have

I have always held them in place and aligned them with the tiny rubber o rings from mudhole then put a tiny (really tiny) spot of super glue on the side of the guide foot. I will have to try the Flex Coat adhesive as it seems to eliminate some unnecessary steps

Hey Aleks any plans on a 703-1 with this material? The X-Ray version of this is an incredible walleye rod

I’d recommend the HS 7600 ( cut down to 7ft if you prefer). The X-ray 703 is also excellent in this application. DS 6101-1 has also performed well for me as a walleye rod.

This might be old school, but i actually prefer a “Tennessee “ style handle on my drift and float rods. Slip rings and a little electric tape and mount the reel wherever it balances the rod the way you prefer. I just finished a Northfork 964 (med power) for our Minnesota steelhead with this style handle and like it.

I have had good luck using the red bands from Mudhole. Once i get all the guides aligned and positioned, i apply a tiny drop of super glue. Let the glue dry 20 minutes or so, then slice bands off and trim excess glue away with an Exacto knife before wrapping. One other note, the red bands come attached to a rubber “holder”. Slide the band down the blank, pull out on the holder and insert the guid

St Croix used to make an 8ft ML fast action that made a great slip bobber rod. They are a 2pc though. I built one a year or two ago on their SCIV blank. I know they are no longer available, but if you could find one, I’d highly recommend it for that application. Long enough to pick up slack line at the hook set. Nice blue finish on them too. I built mine with Minimas with size 5 being the smalle

Phil In my experience, (I’m no pro but Ive only build walleye rods) a good jig blank is the lightest available and the most sensitive. I know sensitivity is subjective, but the with the right blank, balanced with the right reel, you can feel the light “tick” of a lethargic walleye bite on almost slack line. Sometimes they’re so “off” that you have to basically hold the weight of the jig up

Personally, I won’t use anything but graphite arbors. I glue them into the reel seat, let dry then ream to fit the blank tight. Granite to graphite to reel seat to hand enhances sensitivity in my opinion. At least in spinning applications

I have built on the Rainshadow 6’8”m in the eternity series and the NFC SJ 703 X-ray. The eternity series is no longer available but I think they have something comparable? In my experience, both blanks are exceptional for jigs in the 1/2oz range down to around 1/4 oz.

I just put the finish on one of these last night! I built it into a spinning rod for walleye jig fishing. Split grip. CRB LZR Guides. I went 20-12-10-6 then 6-6-5-5-5-5 running guides. Rod feels very light for how much back bone it has. Tip is light and and has a nice transition into a good back bone. I think 3/4 oz might be a little too heavy at least for jigging. I would rate it more 3/16–1/2 o

I have built 4 spinning rods on eternity blanks. All Have been exceptionally lightweight and sensitive. Also the straightest blanks that I have seen. Their ML does seem more like L to me when compared to a St Croix ML but still enough backbone to do the job. The Eternity M seems to be right on in their rating of 1/4-5/8oz. Hope this helps

I’d have to agree with Dean in this one. The St. Croix SC5 MLF are incredibly sensitive and lightweight with plenty of backbone for my application. By far the best blank for jigging/rigging walleye I’ve built on. The Rainshadow Eternity 2 6’8”M is a close second in my opinion
