I just want to mention that when you are talking about very light line, a softer, more moderate action will help protect that line if fighting a large fish. Some years ago we built some 10' "noodle" rods for a local fisherman who was bent on breaking the 2" record for Striper Bass. We both learned a lot about what works under those extreme conditions. Lots of guides, "t

If you find yourself short on winding checks or butt caps, consider the hardware store. There are sections that have specialty washers for instance. Or chair tips for buttt caps. Not as economical maybe as the real thing, but could work in a pinch. You may even find something that works better for you.

If you want something to toss those light 1/8 oz. or lighter lures, with a softer, more moderate action, a 2 or 3 weight fly blank is what I would use. If you like a more moderate action, it will be fun. If you want something a little faster with more backbone, than something in a 7' UL spin blank. Here is a link to Batson "Immortal" series; There are similar choices in low

If you want a rod that is better at being a fly rod and fair as a spin, use a fly blank, but something in the 4-6 wt range. If you want a better long light spin rod, consider a 1 or 2 power Steelhead blank. We have done both, the fly blank gives a nice moderate action, but the cast is more of a"lob". As Roger points out, if you like something a little more "snappy" in perfo

I think Tom was saying a wrap just in the space between guide feet on any 2 foot guide. That way you get the look without adding unnecessary weight. If that makes your custom rod special to you, do it. Just remember that you are adding a tad more weight and yes, it will slow down the action slightly. Some things we have done is White in the space between guide feet, Red guide wraps on a Blue

You might want even shorter then. The "SB" line are fast action, and have 3 pc blanks available. Here is a link; We also have one left of the SB845-3CG, 3/8-1 1/4 oz, 12-25#, 3 piece @ $ 60.00. I thought you were looking for longer blanks at first. I believe you are on the right track, shorter and lighter rod weight is better for all day jigging.

Sounds like some kind of contamination. Perhaps left on the blank from use, or maybe in the mixing container? I have had similar problems on repairs of well used rods, the cure was to wipe down any area I was coating with Lacquer Thinner.

You may want a larger butt guide, and/or higher frame. I would use 2 foot for the first 4 guides, butt and next 3 up, turning in 2 guides. Tape them all on and then mount the reel, run line thru, and put a load to the rod. The blank will bend almost to the handle under load, so you need the butt guide high enough to help keep line off the front grip (or hand). We like 2 ft. sz 16 butt, go

Occasionally you will get one that someone else worked on and replaced using 2 part epoxy. Unless it is "Quick-Cure", you may not be able to break the bond without damaging the blank. The only thing left is either cutting off that end of the blank, or trying the Dremel tool trick as John says.

I agree with herb. It is a lot easier to correct any mistake on reaming if you are dealing with just one bushing at a time.

A Batson Forecast 6' SPG721, or 5' SPG601 fibreglass works well for a stream rod. Roughly 1/16 of an ounce lure weight = 1 wt of fly line. Here is a link;

What line weight are you looking for? As Mick says, a spin blank can sometimes work very well for a "fast" fly blank. Roughly a 16th of an once in spin lure is about a 1 weight in fly line. 3/16 lure = 3/4 wt fly A 5/6 wt fly blank makes a nice soft action 1/8-3/8 oz lure spin blank. We made those up years ago for Nightcrawler fishing, unweighted. There was a book called "Lun

We like size 6 runners, and use size "D" or "E" wrapping thread to make our own stops. I found the mono too stiff for a stop, the edges always seem to catch. Using soft thread goes off the reel and thru the guides well, and a slightly longer tag end seems better. What that does is make a "cushion" that slides easier than a sharp edge. Try it and see how it works

Yes, that all sounds good. But, be sure to tape on the guides after mounting the reel seat and grips, with the reel and line you will be using and do a stress test under load.

A "turnover" is also called an "spiral wrap" among other names. It simply takes the line from the reel on top of the blank, and we do it in 2 guides, takes the line to the under side of the rod. It is especially helpful on a trolling rod, since it transfers the torque to the under side of the rod. We like the sz 16 stripper guide to help the line path. If you just want
