Just a comment, do not go anywhere near a fishing rod with an open flame on the stove! Either a heat gun (carefully), or at most a candle in a candle holder, and again, very carefully. It would not take too much to over-heat the blank and cause much damage. That is why "boiling water" is a better way, since it cannot go past a certain temperature.

We have sold many of the SPG601, SPg720, and SPG721. Some use them for UL spin, but they also make up to a nice 2/3 wt fly rod. Their moderate action is very friendly to cast and fun to catch fish on. Here is a link;

We ran into something interesting years ago. I was working with a local fisherman that wanted to aim for the world record Striper on 2# test line. We were using Loomis 10' "noodle " rod blanks, Penn casting type reels They were wrapped in a "turnover" style, sz 5 running guides. I think we ended up with 15 or 16 guides total. With fewer, the line would make a fairly sharp

A Special word of caution when stripping old finish from a Bamboo rod. It is VERY important to not round of the edges, take too much and you may cause blank damage. Careful scraping is generally better, use a sanding block with GREAT care!

What size reel are you using? Tom's advice is spot on, may not be the set-up. I usually use a stripper guide that will take the line off the reel smoothly, so a sz 16 sounds about right. And, stripper on the 0 axis might work better. Maybe space out a little farther, and use the same size transition guides as the runners. Also, I like something like 6-7" between stripper and each transi

Just watch for "Voids" between arbors of any kind when dealing with a cork grip. I had a local builder years ago try to save time on a fly rod with too big a gap between tape arbors under the grip. It resulted in a void (possibly not enough epoxy under), which in the flexing of the blank during casting eventually cracked the cork. He ended up stripping the cork and reel seat, putting

Something that has worked well for us is a "drop-shot" style hook-keeper mounted up-stream from the first guide Simply incorporate it into the wrap holding the butt guide on. It is out of the way, nothing will grab the line because the butt guide has already captured it. All the set ups that mount near the grips have had complaints thru the years. Try it, you might like it.

We like Flex Coat Quick Cure liquid to assemble reel seat parts, then U-40 paste (or other good paste) to connect to rod blank. Sometimes a quick cure in paste form. Liquid seems to be better for tight fitting parts, paste for any gaps, like cork to blank. Watch out for those, especially pastes, that are "rigid", and not designed for the flexing of a fishing rod.
