Kevin, You have received exceptionally good advice and ideas from Roger, Leslie and Michael; one that is often overlooked is the outlet in the middle of the ceiling. While planning your lighting, when you are confident you have enough, add 50% more; one never has enough light. Roger’s 6ft outlet spacing may be a bit overkill but, like lighting, more is certainly better than not enough; definit

Mr. Ewaniki, You are obviously confused with your statement “The call for micro-measurements of guide alignment did not come from me. Check the first post on this topic.” Everyone knows that I am the OP and conducted the Casting Distance of Misaligned Guides. However, in your third post on this topic, you stated “Different lines: nylon, fluorocarbon, braid - are certain react differently to subs

Mike, Thanks for the reply. I can only assume the PacBay slip rings you speak of are the same as I referenced above. They certainly performed very well on my cork and it is nice to know that they apparently work as well on harder handle surfaces such as CF as well.

Hunter, While the foam-core / CF process has been employed for THs, consider doing a little more research, or hopefully others from this site will offer comments, on how well the hard shell works with slip rings (if you were planning on doing so). It seems to me that the majority of those using a CF handle use tape to secure the reel. I do not care for the tape approach but then I have not built

The benefits of a Tennessee handle (TH) are often overlooked if not ignored in favor of a conventional tube-type seat, be they 1-piece or split / skeleton. As with many others, I initially considered them a cheap, insecure way to mount a reel. But, contrary to the saying, ignorance is NOT bliss! Quite a few years ago, I was given a beautiful, if not historic, vintage (1950s?) Conolon Missilite“

I would like to extend the thank you to those who continue to reply to this thread, both on-site and my personal email as well. Most recently, most of the replies have been geared around the effects of different line types and ambient temperature when used. While I cannot disagree with Mr. Erickson in that Mr. Ewaniki poses more questions than providing proof from data, as he often expects from o

Phil, That is all fine and dandy but when can we all expect the results from your test? It will be a great benefit to everyone; all of us get to finally view hard data facts supplied by you while you get to learn how to actually conduct a test yourself rather than expecting and relying on someone else to do it for you. Sounds like a win-win to me. Try it, you’ll like it, I’m sure ALL the rest of

Ben, I am very curious to learn the nitty-gritty of questions. Vintage 1960s FG Conolon blank, 6ft, UL, fast action (extremely fast after telescoping), 4-piece, 12in Tennessee handle, Fuji KL16-H, 8-H, 5.5M, 5X KB5 runners, KB5 used as tip top (8 guides + 1 tip, all Alconite rings). Lew’s Speed Spin LSG 100 spooled with 4lb P-line Floroclear, .4oz casting bubble as weight.

There will be those such as Mike Ballard who will not benefit from a test like this one because they “I knew”. And then there will be others who demand hard data facts and figures such as Phil Ewaniki. The vast majority of commoners fall between the extremes. Hopefully the test was beneficial to some. Phil, Thank you for offering to expand my test to include different line types used at differe

Mike, With all due respect from one of the “newer builders” to a such veteran as you, you keep bringing-up the 10* which may be the reason you see no point of the test in the first place. Obviously no one, whether a newer builder or veteran, would build a rod with guides misaligned by 10*. The 10*, not to mention the even more profound 45*, were simply chosen as extremes to demonstrate the effec

Thanks for the post-test replies; hopefully more to come. Steven, You are welcome; it was a nasty job but someone had to do it lol!!! I could not resist ribbing people in other parts of the country by including the 85* weather presently here in LA LA Land within the test results. Admittedly, it is unseasonal even for us = 20* cooler in a few days. But the nighttime temps are still PLUMMETING i

Johnnie, While I whole-heartedly agree with Spencer’s statement “The guides we used are over engineered for our needs”, common sense would dictate not using a Fuji KT on a tuna stick or inversely a HB on an UL rod. Virtually all present guides are extremely strong for their respective minimal weight. As long as the guide is not grossly over or underrated for the application, you will be fine.

Paul, I will be the first to admit not being as in-tune to fly fishing as others. That said, your homeland CTS blanks are highly respected within the upper echelon of fly fishing. Your post is the first I have witnessed suggesting mix-matching different WT fly blank SECTIONS is even conceivable let alone practical. Unless built on the same, identical mandrel, with the same shape of the fabric fl

JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!! But before I reveal the outcome of the “Casting Distance of Misaligned Guides” (CDMG) test, allow me to bore you with how my new “Removable Guide Telescopic Rod” (RG Tele) performed. At the risk of sounding boastful, it performed flawlessly; none of the guides shifted from their seated positions and the 4-piece telescopic blank never loosened or moved. Granted < 50 casts

The squirrels ignored my casting bubble and I was able to conduct and conclude my “Casting Distance of Misaligned Guides” test. However, since so few of you accepted and replied to my request for predictions of the outcome, I am not telling anyone!!!

David, Thanks for your insightful reply. Joining the “Norman Miller camp” is ALWAYS a safe bet; I wonder what his predictions of tomorrow’s Super Bowl is lol!!!! Your observation of the amount of weight used for the test being heavier than what would be normally used with 4lb line is correct and I will certainly not disagree. The .4oz casting bubble was chosen to minimize wind influence and sim

Thanks for the replies although I was hoping for more requested predictions, just for fun. What’s to be scared of? I am glad I looked at the replies before going to the park for the test. Michael posed a good question; the spinning reel will be a Lew’s Laser Speed Spin LSG100 (quite new) spooled with 4lb P-Line Floroclear (mono/fluorocarbon hybrid) and a 2.5in teardrop casting bubble which weigh

Michael, Thanks for the reply; I can always count on you. The “included angle” is the total of both the “-” and “+” degrees from vertical; example, -10* from vertical to +10* from vertical = 20 included* total.

Allow me to add and verify that the tip top and butt guides will remain vertical with the others staggered at their specified angles.

While my “removable guide, telescopic rod” (RG Tele) may not be a milestone in rod building history or a trend-setting design, it accomplished its goal of producing a multi-piece pack rod which protected the fragile tip sections within the butt section while still affording PROPER guide placement as per 2-line static load testing for optimum performance; protection AND performance in one rod. John, Without a degree in chemistry, I will leave formulating epoxy recipes to those who do! They know what they are doing and we don’t. One might APPARENTLY get lucky thinning an epoxy but no one knows for certain what effect it has on the cured product without some type of professional analysis. Granted there are those who thin their epoxy with CLAIMED success and we aren’t building structural

Phil, Thanks for your veteran reply as well. While every rod builder or angler's ultimate goal is to catch fish, hopefully not a boot, the RG Tele project was more focused on the safe and convenient transportation and storage of the rod to afford the backpacker / angler a PROPER fishing tool once to their destination. Although those frequenting the roadside waters may not see the need or importa

David, Thanks for your reply. Give me a break, the epoxy isn’t even fully cured yet lol!!! While actually fishing the “RG Tele” will obviously be the ultimate test, the closest fishable waters to me are Pay-To-Play “settling basins” which I am not into. But I AM anxious to learn how it performs and may have to lower my standards. While flattered by your “serious craftsmanship involved there” co

Aaron, Thanks for the reply and complement. I was pleasantly surprised with the minimal weight of the CF tow base + thread + epoxy as well. I have no way to weight the CF separately but can guarantee it is infinitesimal = the weight of a RG is virtually identical to the guide being wrapped directly onto the blank. Wade, Thank you also. The RG fabrication process is fairly well explained withi

Chris and Steve, Thanks for the replies. Although possibly not a major break-through in rod building, the RG Tele is an example of how different approaches can solve different issues. We are all here to learn.
