The new slate eternity isn't as fast and it doesn't have as much power as the blue series. I would say that it closer resembles a point blank, with more sensitivity and lighter weight. The blue series is a better jig rod, the new rod is a better worm rod. Simply put Nick

Hi Wayne, 17mm might be cutting it close as you might need an 18mm seat for those blanks depending on where you cut, and there are more factors to consider. Phenix 909... abyss? axis? black diamond? And you will be cutting 6" from the bottom, top, or a combination of top and bottom? How far out do you want the reel seat from the butt? You can ream 1-2mm out of those reel seats to get a

For a 7' bass rod, a 9" handle should be fine, I usually measure out 14"-14.5" from the butt to the top of the reel seat. Im assuming casting, not spinning.

Starts with knowing what kind of rod you want, and if it is appropriate for what you are fishing for. Some rods benefit from the crispness of great sensitivity, while others benefit from softness and strength. Be clear on the application for what you want to build the rod for first. Next look at the materials of the blank. The combination of graphite, carbon fiber, and fiberglass are most com

Hi Denham, Best way to cleanly remove finish and guides for me takes elements from the above with a few added steps. Heat up the epoxy carefully and cut a portion of the end of the wrap so you can unravel the thread the opposite direction that you wrapped it. Heat the epoxy (I use a heat gun) carefully from time to time so the thread will pull the rest of the epoxy off. Once all the thread

Whats up guys, I was recently asked to put together a couple custom fly rods. Problem is, I don't fly fish, nor have I built any fly rods before. I usually only build rods for applications for which I have fished, because the experience allows me to put together a well thought out product. That being said, I've built almost every type of rod out there except a fly rod. For you fly rod buil

I tried it specifically for that reason and admittedly it did look cleaner. I do regret it however, because it might not last as long for my buddy who I built the rod for. But, in any case, it might be worth talking to the fella about both options so he can make an informed decision on what to do.

Probably braid, 40#. I ended up ordering the KWs for a 30 stripper, 3 guide reduction, and size 7 runners. This guy is a brute and I decided to keep to the double foots for the user durability, though personally I would have been comfortable with single foot guides. You guys rock, I'm gonna play around with this one for a bit. Heavy spinning is a little outside my comfort zone. Guess its tim

Whats up all, I rarely build any spinning rods for the salt, but Im gonna put one together for a buddy. I already have an RCLB79L picked out for the blank, and he's going to fish multipurpose saltwater for it on the west coast. Question I have is, what size stripper you guys use, and what guides to use in general. I figure the running guides will be the same BLNAGs I usually use, but was ho

Rainshadow has a very niche socal following, with some heavy recognition amongst some of the most devout salt guys. It's not as mainstream as phenix, though it definitely has it's mark. As for a 9' blank, I would look at the United Composites CE900 series. For Calstar look at the composite BTG690J, 900M, and glass 690J. The Seeker pinhead series is an awesome rod too and they have some 9' bla

No sweat Mark. I think before picking you should think about your application though. Do you want to fish live bait, yoyo, or surface iron? Also, did you want something stronger, lighter, parabolic, or faster? Most importantly, it's less about what is "better" or "best" and more about what is best for you and the type of fishing. The Calstar 270-8 or the 270H is a brute r

Depends on what you want I guess. IMHO rainshadow>phenix but thats just me. But a 10-40lb rod, calstar 270H is a really nice blank.

You could do it if you like. As spencer said, even a well wrapped single foot guide could withstand that type of fishing, and titanium frames are plenty strong. Though I wonder if it is worth the money. The performance of basic ceramic guides are able to withstand heavy braid fishing, let alone high-end ceramic or torzite guides. It makes more sense for spinning guides, since the frames and r

Heat changes the viscosity of the finish, and if you have the need to change the viscosity then you always have that option. It will hasten polymerization, speed the absorption into the threads, and remove air bubbles (keep in mind with a good mix these things will happen on their own pretty easily anyway). Nevertheless, you will always hear about using caution with heat, whether it be from a l

Hi Larry, I recently built a Point Blank PB761MF as a senko stick and I really love it. Sensitive enough, light weight with the responsiveness for good hooksets and casts. Everyone has really good input, so I figure I'll add a couple cents to the cup. I've not tried the carbon fiber grips, though I probably will in the future. They boast sensitivity, but I palm the reels and keep my in

I've used a 7'6 Point Blank casting, 7'6 Phenix Ultra MBX casting, 7'6 Rainshadow Immortal casting, and a 7'6 High-mod MHX spinning all on my float tube where the positioning isn't optimal for bringing fish in. I've used the Phenix without any problems for several years, and so far this year the Point Blank, Rainshadow, and MHX have given me zero problems. I am, however, ultra conscious of the
