Prokote though marketed as a medium finish is pretty light build, which means it will more easily spread to the most distal portions of your wrap (the guide feet) in this example. It would get even worse with thinner finishes, or if you heated the finish where it thinned too much. You can either put on much thinner coats and more of them, or you can switch to a high build finish and see how it

Hey Roger, Same boat. Most of the time rods break, its because of user error. MHX is fine, even "abused" the ones I have built have lasted well. Nick

So many questions... What reel did you decide on? What species and # line / drag will you be fishing? How long of a rod? Also, what is your question? Nick

Thanks guys, that was a fun video to edit. The fish eye does distort the action a little bit and the rod takes a little getting used to. The blank itself is probably one of the lightest in class that I have built. I would compare the action close to the new slate rainshadow eternity blanks, but lighter. The old blue eternity blanks were still the fastest blanks Ive ever pulled on. There is a

Hi all, Looking to build a spinning rod for trout fishing 2lb test. New Concept suggests size 6 choke and runners, but I want to go as small as possible. Will smaller sizes, say 5 or 5.5 hinder casting distance? Thanks, Nick

Like sandbags on a diving board... On a serious note though, the heavier the rod the less it matters comparatively speaking. Nick

Seeker CJBF80H or XH (both in E class or S glass which is more expensive) Calstar Grafighter 800H Calstar 6480 (both in E glass and graphite composite) Rainshadow RCLB79MH or RCLB80M All good blanks, just a starting point. Personally, I try not to think in terms of "top of the line," since rod building is all about finding a blank that has the specific action, sensitivity (or la

I prefer no coating at all. Finish and gloss flake and scratch off in pieces when covering a relatively soft material such as cord. The sign of use on tightly wrapped cord wears nicely. Also, I prefer Atwood cord and tarred seine twine over paracord, but to each their own though. Nick

Comparatively speaking, spinning guides are much larger and heavier than casting guides, so achieving balance is much more difficult especially with lighter spinning rods. They almost always end up being top heavy, so I just work on making the lightest rod possible. The reel usually helps to offset the weight as well. I also don't like adding weight to rods as a personal thing unless I know th

ProKote is the softest finish on the market, and also takes much longer than flex coat to fully cure. Even fully cured, its still softer than other finishes. Not necessarily a bad thing, as it is more resistant to cracking and it doesn't yellow as fast. It depends on what your needs are. Good luck, Nick

Trim the thread before you pull the thread puller, instead of pulling the thread all the way through. Or use a lighter to clean up the frays. Best of luck Nick

Use a wooden popsicle stick to abrade the finger prints after some gentle heat. Once its broken down, denatured alcohol should soak in and clean it right off after a few repetitions. good luck

I used rubber cement for the initial application, which the hypalon didn't bond to the blank well because of it. This might have been why it split. That and it was so easy to apply that I might have been a little aggressive on the stretch, almost 1.5 to double the ID of the hypalon.

Whats up all, Was hoping to get some suggestions on how to repair/replace a rear grip for a saltwater rod. The grip has a 4" split that fully exposes the blank near the butt. I am considering cork tape shrink wrap but don't like the weight of it all. Any way to slip fresh hypalon on? Thanks, Nick

Agreed you're going to have a ton of different ways people do it. Everyone else has really good input, but I don't use any other tools personally. For me, - I secure the reel seat first (according to the spine if you like). - After that has bonded, I tape and wrap the guides and top in rough alignment. - Then put a reel in the reel seat and adjust the stripper guide precisely to the ree
