Hi everyone, looking around for a different type of grips. I'm over hypalon, Eva, corks, leather and so on......even tried most types of golf grips, just after a material based rubber or something that looks real smart. happy to even get some custom made.. Anyone know of someone that i can chat to.?
cheers

Freshwater or saltwater grips?
Believe it or not, this is not intended as a smart-aleck remark. Try garden hose or automotive hose material.
If I wanted to be smart mouthed...I would suggest using a condom.
Another idea is to have an auto-glass shop make you a bead of silicone sealant in a length long enough to make your grips. I actually have some a friend of mine gave me with another intended purpose in mind.
Decoy anchor line could accomplish the same thing and it has a relatively small diameter. I would compare it to what is commonly sold as butt cord which is typically 1/16th inch.
With those alternate ideas out of the way,how about rattan strips? Rodmaker Magazine had a nice "How to" article some years back.

I do alot of leather grips for Saltwater, and believe it or not, salt water and leather are about the worst compatible pair so "Freshwater or Saltwater" is no difference all comes down to the angler and the care he wants to give to the rod
thanks for the info.

You might look at wood grips. I make fly grips from Maple Burl, Curly Maple, Spalted Maple and Spalted Tamarind. These are light enough so that weight is not a serious problem. I have also seen some of the acrylic esters that pen builders use to make grips. These come in a large variety of colors and patterns. My only concerns is the weight and the softness (easy scratching) of these plastics. I have used them for reel seat inserts and haven't had any complaints so far.

Wood and acrylic can both be cored with rigid urethane foam to keep the weight down.

How about the flock shrink tubing. They come in different colors and can be put over a preexisting grip, or a foam core. Could also use carbon fiber (or fiberglass) foam core grips. Mud hole sells some and so does Riley Rods. They come in different colors and look sharp. You can also make your own and get all the materials needed at Riley Rods.

I have thought of doing wood but it wouldn't really conform to the style I do. have used the shrink wrap flocking tube and once again don't really like it. (probably just being too fussy.) I know people can get custom golf grips made so I'll probably go down that road and see what happens..
Really appreciate the input.
Cheers

Golf grips are good, but I personally love seine twine wraps more. Then again, I'm Southern California brainwashed...
...and proud of it!
