I use three coats of finish on all of my guides. You don't need to scuff it up unless the first coat was done more than a week ago. If you need to scuff it up, use the grey colored scotch-brite pads.

If you live near me in NJ, an auto body shop will run you about 100 dollars. After telling them where to put their spray guns, I painted it myself. Not hard at all

I'm with Paul. I have put in three orders with them and I have nothing but good things to say about them. One suggestion is to buy the Hugos Amazing tape. It only sticks to itself. Just wrap it around the spool to keep the thread from unwinding.

67. Re: Spray Enamel
I picked up a two gallon compressor that hangs on the wall at Lowes this weekend and a Badger airbrush. The paint that I picked up is used for painting lexan bodies on RC cars so its very flexible. Only other question is, can Permagloss be sprayed?

Thanks, I'll have to see how this acrylic works(I need to justify buying an airbrush and compressor) If it doesn't look good, I'll look into the Fusion

I just started using Madiera and found that three coats of Flex Coat CP worked fine. Even using very light blue over a darker blue showed no signs of bleeding through.

Yeah, I tested and it melted. I found an Acrylic paint that flexes when dry. The only reason I wanted to use the spray enamel was because it was the perfect color(Hot Magenta) I don't think Plasticoat makes a hot pink (I don't see many hot pink cars rolling around..lol) Thanks for the heads up

Better yet, you can build two and tell her that it would look better as a matching set. Cheaters always win!

Personally, I would stick with the Alconites. Great guides at a reasonable price. My only question is, why build a few cheap rods? Just get the components for the rod you want, take your time and build it. If you mess up, cut it off and start over. You'll actually save money in the long run, and wind up with a rod that you will use over and over again.

73. Spray Enamel
I have a can of Testors spray enamel and was wondering if it would be good to paint a blank with and apply Permagloss over that. Will the Permagloss react with the enamel?, and will the enamel flex enough to prevent cracking?

If you take your time and prep the foot good enough, you should have no problem overwrapping the guide. I always use A underwraps and A overwraps with limited problems of the thread digging in to the underwrap. NCP needs no CP unless you are doing the overwrap with regular thread.

I mix 3cc of each all the time, and have enough to coat a 10 inch butt wrap, all the guides on a rod, and still have plenty left over. I use the leftover in the cup to check when it is tack free, and then stop turning the rod.

Go to home depot and but a roll of 2 inch wide double sided duct tape. This stuff is real sticky and will hold your threads fine.Just wrap something on the blank, under the tape so you can get it off easily

79. Re: Trim wraps
Lately, I have been doing my trim bands as part of the underwrap. I like doing this because I don't need to worry about a trim band with only one or two turns popping loose.

I use Flex Coat Hi-Build and normally let it turn overnight.

I use masking tape to hold down guides while wrapping, and I don't even worry about contamination

What I just tried this weekend is to put a coat of finish down, then write the name on a piece of scotch tape. After laying down the tape, I let it dry for 15 minutes and applied the next coat of finish. The good thing was that I messed it up three times, but since it was on the tape, no big deal.

Bic pens are good burnishing tools too. Just don't let your dog get a hold of it without you knowing first.

I started using a white out pen to layout my wraps. I just wrap over the dots and haven't had a problem
