With shop space being at a premium I've been utilizing my american tackle wrapper as my grip lathe. It does the job fine but I'd like to upgrade to the tailstock they offer for safety. Has anyone used the tailstock available from american tackle through various retailers that can attest to it's worth? Right now i'm using a rod support to keep my mandrel centered but I'm not to excited about it's

Thanks guys that is my larger concern. I see on hobbylobby and even @#$%& that there are companies selling sheet stock at great prices but I wasn't sure of the density compared to say a product marketed by rod building supply houses.

In looking for the different colors of EVA available I stumbled across hobbylobby. They carry sheets of eva material in different thicknesses. Is there any particular difference in density of eva material that one should be aware of? Anything special to say Mudholes EVA sheets compared to something you'd get from amazon or the like. Just trying to expand the color options.

Is there a way to view the older articles?

I was looking around for some good articles on construction/design of custom eva grips or cork grips. Would anybody have old articles saved that they could pass along?

In searching online I see that places like Hobbylobby and the like sell eva sheet material. Is it of a different density then the eva used for grip making or am I missing something?

After looking at the pricing of the matagi seats i decided to try my hand at painting my own. I was wanting to go with a pearl white. Has anyone had luck sourcing a paint? Doesn't look like testors makes a pearl white color.

David Thanks for the info on blanks. Honestly the majority of our fishing is done with a simple popping cork with live bait that is thrown out and occasionally popped. Every once in a while the rod would be used for jigging a 1/8-1/4oz jighead off the bottom or faster for trout. He isn't a topwater guy. The sp843 that i recently built on does great with topwater baits. I would probably make i

So don't use recoil guides on an acidwrap period? not even the single and double foot normal style?

I was going to try out some different materials on my next build to expand knowledge. One area was on guides. I was looking at putting on the recoil snake series of guides in an acidwrap configuration. The rod will obviously be baitcaster in the 7' range and be used for topwater and popping cork applications for inshore species. What seems to be the general consensus on them? do they limit ca

opps you know your right. Thats what I get for trying to read. here are the specs SP843 Clear Gloss 7'0" 1 8-14lb. 1/4-5/8oz. 0.478 5.0 MOD-F M 1.8oz. All purpoes Trout/Redfish/Inshore/Popping corks I would buy this blank to attempt a 6'6" in the same range with a little faster tip. SB782 Clear Gloss 6'6" 1 8-14lb. 1/4-5/8oz. 0.495 4.5 F M 2.3oz. Smallmouth Bass/Walleye

Ah okay I didn't take the model number to mean much as to the blank specs. I was just going by the specs on the batson site. learn something new.

I guess let me clarify. It doesn't have to be an exact match to the 843. he just fished with it one day and said the setup fishes well but he thought he would like a little stiffer tip and likes to fish with shorter bait caster rods. Something with not as much whip when wiggled ya know. Again why I thought the 781 seemed viable. Same power rating but faster tip Mod-F to F.

Thats why i was leaning toward the 781. It has the same specs except a faster tip and is 6" shorter But I'm still a newb ya know

I've built a couple rods off of the batson sp843 series of blank. I really like the performance for the money. I've chatted with my brother in law about building him a custom baitcaster and he likes the way the sp843 works but would like a little shorter and a little stiffer blank. In looking at batsons website the SB781 seems like it fits the bill exactly but. I haven't built a lot of rods so ca

I've thought of making some grips for my next rod but can't seem to source out all the cool colors of cork and eva that everyone seems to find. Where are some good sources? also all of the thin sheet material and what looks like pieces of ivory etc. Thanks Adam

Roger thanks. I do indeed use tape to hold the colors down on the blank. Sometimes they just get in the way ya know.

Simple question but for a new builder and finding all the great info on the net on adding and removing thread into a wrap I thought it might be usefull to understand what the old salty dogs do. Here is the question. Your about to make a guide wrap. your gunna run 10 wraps of black followed by 2 wraps of metallic then 4 wraps of a accent color then 2 wraps of metallic again followed by black to

I did in fact find it easier to pack everything at the end but they still would move slightly .

Hindsight being what it is I should have underwrapped black A under the wrap. It would of helped to hide any errors i'm sure.

Ah okay so you want less tension the longer the pattern? makes sense because your right the outer threads with no other threads pinning them down where the worst ones.

This being my third build I figured I would try a simple diamond pattern crosswrap. The design and colors came out great but i had wicked trouble getting the threads to pack together. In the end after finish I noticed more gaps then I would like. Hopefully I either did something wrong or there is a technique i'm missing. Here was my process. 1. After roughly determining the length I wanted I

Does anyone use like a scratch awl or somthing to scratch a tiny mark on the blank?

Might seem like a silly question but I was curious as to the answers out there. What does everyone seem to use for layout marks? There is the obvious grease pen but that is a little course when laying out marks for chevrons and the like. What has everyone found to work well and not leave to much of a mark so that it doesn't show after a wrap is complete.

I stumbled across a couple youtube videos where an electronic foot pedal was used as a replacement for a mechanical one on old sewing machines. The added control seems awesome. Has anyone upgraded their foot pedal for finer control? Anything i would need to be aware of when purchasing one?
