Howdy peoples! I have a couple of questions concerning Minima guides, First a bit of history. I've only built two spinning rods, I used the KR Concept GPS to tell me the the size and type of guides to use. I absolutely love the way the rods I built using the KR Concept, perform. They cast beautifully. With that said, I looked at a friends rod today and it had Titanium colored Minima guides on

Lynn, going by Tom's description of the characteristics of the blank, (I've never handled one) I would think drop shot, and lighter wacky rigs. Something with a standard wire, or light wire exposed hook. I'm not disagreeing with Mike when he says jerkbaits, but I personally don't like soft tipped rods for jerkbaits. I fish jerkbaits a lot for smallmouth bass, and there are times when you rea

Mathew, while the weight of an extra guide and its accompanying thread and finish will have an affect on a rod's performance, it can also enhance its performance. If you look at the forum list there is a thread titled "Relative weight". If you haven't read it yet, you may want to give it a read. You'll see it has to do with what affect added weight, has on a rods performance. In it, me

As Phil said, it is not going to be easy removing the epoxy you used.. Personally I wouildn't even attempt removing it. Not on that blank. Mainly because it's painted. The chances of you getting that type of epoxy off without at least damaging the paint, is most likely going to be slim to none. If it's the stuff I am thinking about, that is some tough stuff. Chalk it up as a learning experienc

Welcome Matthew. And I couldn't agree more with what has been posted thus far. There are no stupid question. This is the best place you could have come to learn the art and craft of rod building. The members and owner of this site, as well as its sponsors, are second to none. The willingness they show in helping those new to the art and craft of building a fishing rod, is remarkable. I am

As Norm said, it's just cosmetic. I personally do a tip wrap just to keep the look all the way to the tip. If you'd rather not do a wrap there and are concerned about the change in diameter from blank to the tube of the tip top, just put a little thread wrap epoxy on it. The amount of weight it, or a wrap and epoxy are minimal. It isn't going to hurt the rods performance. It's more of an

IMO there are both absolutes, as well as, much ado about nothings. An example of an absolute is, a rod that has single foot #5 guides as its' running guides, is going to cast (perform) better than if that same rod were to have double foot #6 guides as its' running guides. I know this for a fact because I changed the guides on one of my factory rods. It had the #6 double foot guides I referred

I've built on the Rainshadow RX7 CB66MH. The Revelation series is an upgraded version of the RX7 series. They are really nice blanks. Of course if you already have yours in hand, you know that already. lol As far as the size 6 BLAG guides go, they'll be fine, but with that blank I don't know that 5 will be enough. I'm assuming you'll be using a 3 guide reduction train? 3 double foot guides th

Chris, thank you for the reply. I have watched that video a couple of times. Those guys were having fun and did a nice presentation. So good that I ordered one of the kits. lol I just came here because it left me with some questions, As usual ,the fine members of this site took care of a relative newbie. A special thank you to Phil Erickson. He was kind enough to help me with questions I

Update. I just got a call from Kevin. Great guy, he put me in touch with customer service and all is good with the world. As speculated by Chris, the NFC sale had them swamped. Understandable. I spoke to Helen in customer service, very nice lady and very apologetic. I certainly hope I didn't get anyone in trouble. I truly do believe they care about their customers. I'll without a doubt be

I've used green Scotch Brite to take the painted finish off of a blank. I actually found it out by accident. lol It worked well though, and the blank showed no sign of damage.

Thanks for the updates guys. I did get an e mail saying my order had shipped, but I don't know if it's just the items that were back ordered, or if was also a replacement item for a reel seat I have a problem with. If they are indeed going to exchange it? Micheal, thanks for the e mail link to Kevin. I think I'll take advantage of it. I have a couple of questions for him actually.

Tom, thank you for your response and providing the Rodmake Magazine information It is very much appreciated. I'm embarrassed to say that I am not yet a Rodmaker Magazine subscriber, but I plan to be very soon. I knew I would enjoy building rods when I started doing it, but I really didn't think I'd be interested in learning more of the ...... I guess finer points of rod building isn't the proper

I just received an order from Mud Hole ..... awesome customer service, and fast shipping .... as usual. Just thought I'd say that. Anyhow, part of that order was one of the CFX carbon fiber grip making kits. I'm hoping to get a couple of questions answered, and perhaps any tips those who are familiar with making these grips, may be kind enough to share. My first question is. Of course I pu

Norm, some day I hope to be able to get to the Expo. I am sure I would be like the proverbial, kid in a candy store. My problem is at my place of employment, our vacation time renews on the anniversary of our date of hire. For me that's March 11th. It would be hard for me to save vacation time. I'm due to be up to 3 weeks vacation year after this up coming year. Maybe then. I just checked, it

Norm .... again thank you for the excellent post. I am looking for a blank with more power than the QLSJ782. Figure I'll need it for longer casts. But I don't know if I want that much more power. Referring to the PB701MF. With the numbers you gave (excellent info!!) I'd probably go with the PB701MLF and count on the added rod length to move more line for me. Man I wish there was a place I co

lol Lynn .... luv ya too bro! And yeah, I figured that's what you were referring to when you mentioned hanging weight from the end. As far as you or I getting it ..... I don't know .... I just know that adding weight to the butt of my rods that it is appropriate for (and it isn't necessarily appropriate for all rods) make the rods less fatiguing to use, it without a doubt enhances bite detect

Norm, thanks for the post sir. Very much appreciated. I'll be looking to build a new shaky head rod this off season, and am definitely going to take a look at a Point Blank. I'm curious if you, or anyone else that has built on a Point Blank have built on the PB701MF blank? As I mentioned I'll be using it primarily to fish shaky head jigs in weights from 1/8 - 5/16 oz. I'm currently using a

I would say that's a no. Looking at the heights of the guide (Utmost shows a guide height chart for the minis) the 3 has a height of 4.18 mm, or .165 in. And the 4 has a height of 6.10 mm, or .240 in. While the rings are 1 mm different in OD, they are only .2 mm different in ID.

Oh I am just going off literature I read when the blanks were being newly introduced. I may be wrong but I sure thought it said a cat's tongue finish..... cat's tongues are pretty rough lol ..... evidently I misinterpreted it. So it's a smooth finish? Cool !!! Thanks guys!

Anyone else having a problem getting a response to e mails you've sent, or been able to get anyone in customer service to answer the phone? I've been trying to contact them for a couple of days, I'm wondering if they're having technical difficulties? Tom, if this isn't the proper type of question please feel free to delete the thread. I'm just wondering if they are having difficulties?

First let me say that I have only built 7 rods to date, so I don't have a lot of experience with the blanks of many different manufacturers. I have two NFC blanks from the Gen2 IM series that I will be starting builds on very soon, but they will be the first NFC blanks I've built on. They are very nice blanks. With that said, were it me I would build on the Immortal IMMC72MH, and take 2"

The shark skin ........ or as I think Point Blank calls it .... cat's tongue. I'm wondering if that finish can me removed with Scotch Brite, or would it need to be sanded? The only reason I haven't even considered one of the their blanks is because of that finish. Kind of like when the Eternity's were blue. I would consider one if I could get one with a smooth natural finish.

I agree with Lance on the balance point, although I actually like to have mine balance right on the hood that holds the front of the reel foot. I would caution you on moving the reel seat forward (towards the tip of the rod) just to get a good balance point. Too far and you could have a rod that is very difficult to cast and fish because the rear grip is too long. Take into account clothing t

A question for Terry Belinger, or really anyone that may be able to answer them. First. I am going to be using CFX grips on my next two builds. One build using a grip that I am going to build myself from one of the CFX kits available, and one build using pre-made grips available from Mud Hole. I'm going to be using the same laminating epoxy used to laminate the carbon fiber to the foam cor

They were in perfect condition, and as I expected, they are beautiful blanks. The natural raw finish on th

Phil Ewanicki .........you ask why a rod blank manufacturer wouldn't advertise the ability of their blanks to transmit vibrations (energy) How would you suggest a manufacturer advertise such information so that the average person could make sense of it? Lets say that there was an industry standard established, and that every manufacturer used the same amount of supplied energy to test their b
