I put line on my spinning reels the same way I put line on my casting reels. The only exception is that for spinning reels I have the line coming off the bottom of the spool, and for casting reels it comes off the top of the spool. This whole lay the the spool flat on the floor or make sure the line goes this way or that, has never worked for me. I actually get less twist doing it the way I d

Can't help on the dark spot, but you are going to love the rod you build on that blank. I use the rod I built on the same blank, for flipping and pitching for largemouth bass. It is one awesome rod. I am sorry to hear that they are no longer sanding the IM blanks. I purchased my blank last year about this time, and it was sanded from the factory. If you ask me they are doing a disservice by not

If you were using fluorocarbon or regular nylon mono filament as the main line, then I'd say line twist like others have said. But you said braid, which makes me think there are factors other than line twist in play. Yes braided line twists, but its extreme suppleness means that it takes a lot of twist before it starts showing up as twist induced tangles. Personally I don't use braid on spinn

I'm with Grant here. My first endeavor into working on rods was replacing the guides on 3 of my factory rods. They actually turned out very well, except that they looked like footballs, and the single foot guides had finish running up the legs. When I joined this site I spent a lot of time on the photo section, looking at the work of others. The finish on their wraps was nice and flat. I wanted m

I've trimmed the MVT casting seats threads with zero problems. It cuts like any other "graphite" reel seat. Personally I use a copping saw with a very fine tooth blade. It works great. As far as something to cap off the end of the reel seat goes ... you might want to consider something that I do, and make a little nub (for lack of a better word) that is turned down to the same OD as

Colby, as this man has helped you out in such a kind way, I can certainly understand you wanting to build this rod for him. Knowing this, I would do the same. I will say that I don't envy you in this endeavor. Not because he has a problem breaking rods, but because based on him wanting a "broomstick", it may be tough finding a blank that isn't overly tip heavy. You bass fish, so you kn

I've been following this thread and I could be wrong, but here is what I think ....... no way is this guy breaking rods on the hook set, and if he is he has done something to damage the blank prior to it breaking on a hook set. And my guess is that he has high sticked it either in trying to free a hung up bait, perhaps trying to pull a fish out of cover, or by boat flipping a fish the wrong way,

Below is a link to one of the spinning rods I've built using a reverse mounted fore grip as the part of a split rear grip. If it looks like amine blush on the rear grip and the butt grip, it's because there was. Everything was just dry fitted when I took the picture. I've since sanded and re-coated the grips to get rid of the blush, eliminated the trim ring and little carbon sleeved fore

I've built 5 spinning rods so far and other than one that has a full length carbon fiber rear grip, every one of them is a split grip that uses a fore grip for the rear grip against the reel seat., I prefer it because of the way you (or at least me and most people I have seen) hold a spinning rod, you don't need a long rear grip. I use a 2 1/4 - 2 1/2" fore grip mounted backwards. My butt gr

lol ..... ok Phil, you win. Throughout history the Trebuchet is the only type of catapult ever used. And an unloading rod blank won't propel a weight. perched on its tip. As far as my armchair goes ... I need one that's more comfy. I've been experiencing some irritating pain in a certain region of my body of late. I thought it may be my advancing age. Turns out it's something entirely unrelated

I'm not touching the 1/8 oz jig versus the 1/2 oz jig falling thing. Gravity is a constant, but outside of a vacuum there are other forces that come into play..If I go up on my snow covered roof and drop a 1/2 oz fishing weight, and an 1/8 oz feather, the rock is hitting the ground before the feather. As far as the original post of the thread goes ....... huh? If I reel my bait tight to m

Larry, that's the great thing about CCS #s. You don't have that whole manufacturer X's medium light fishes like a medium from brand Y. If you know how the numbers relate, then you can know what to expect from the various blanks. As far as the Immortal blanks and Rainshadow's named powers go, they're kind of here and there. Some of there named ratings and lure weight ranges match that of other ma

Tom, agreed. Edit for addition. Larry, I see you were doing your post at the same time I was replying to Tom. I can't really speak to the longer blanks you're talking about, but I can share some CCS #s for an Immortal blank that I built on that might fit the bill. I absolutely love the Immortal blanks. I've only built on two different models thus far, but as you have experience with them, you

Correct me if my thinking is wrong here, but casting distance is related to rod tip speed. The reason a longer rod casts further, is because its tip moves faster. If you move a 6' rod from 90 - 0 degrees, its tip travels 9.42'. If you move a 7' rod from 90 - 0 degrees, its tip travels 11' in the same amount of time. You don't actually have to move the rod faster, as the added length multiplie

Hi Lynn ....... yes, I'm watching, and you're doing a bang up job !! lol And Phil, you got it........ and to be sure of how you do this, just go back and read this thread over again. Or read any of the other threads that deal with rod and reel balance. There's a bunch of them.

I certainly can't speak to every situation, but I can speak to my personal experience. To begin, I only build rods for myself, and they are all rods that will be used for freshwater bass fishing. I also only balance the rods that I will be using for slack, or semi slack line techniques. With that said, the longest rod I've built thus far has been 7'3" long. The most weight I have had to a

First off ......... lol Ron, good one !!! Having a fish on is definitely the objective. As far as the more obvious topic of the thread goes ......... some questions first? Dale? You are balancing the rod and reel combination, and not just the rod itself, correct? Also, you do have the guides at least taped on in their approximate locations, correct? Additionally, you have the reel full of lin

I'm lucky in that I have an entire room in my house that I use for fishing related items. The room is 10' x 11'. I have a power wrapper set up on an 8' long table along one wall. I keep most of my supplies in Plano 3700 boxes that I keep on the table itself. Other supplies (sandpapers, clamps, heat guns n such I keep in a 3 drawer filing cabinet in the room. I have a small 10 rod, rod rack that I

Sounds like you're describing fishing a weight forward spinner, like the Erie Dearie. The head has a single French style blade behind it, followed by a single sproat style. It is fished using the count down method, and then starting your retrieve when you've counted down to the depth the fish are at, or just above. You don't want the bait to go below the level of the fish because suspended walle

IMO there are different ways of looking at performance. Performance in its purest sense, and performance based on how you feel about a certain object. I love my truck. It performs the same whether it's dirty, or clean. But when it's clean and waxed all nice and shiny .... oh baby. I really love my truck then. And even though I know it isn't true, my pride in it's appearance has be feeling tha

I built a drop shot rod on the Eternity version of that blank. I did a KR concept guide train using Fuji T2 guides, which are the dark grey titanium with the slim SIC inserts. I absolutely love them. The rod has a 8.75" CFX rear grip, a Forecast size 17 skeleton reel seat with woven graphite insert, Alps TRS and TRB trim rings with an EVA butt cap. It weighs in a 3.65 oz. ...

I've only built on one Hydra blank. A SJ 2 from their NG series. It's a nice blank, I'd say more middle of the road compared to other blanks I've built on. I am selling the rod I built on it to a buddy of mine. He likes it, and says it's about the same as his G Loomis E6X as far as sensitivity goes. I will say that Hyrda's customer service is outstanding. If you have a problem with one of th

Lynn, I probably shouldn't have said ridges, it's a texture though. I seriously doubt that it would affect wrapping, which is why I mentioned that I'll probably leave it as is. It was just unexpected. I do know at the time I bought the rod, it was Shimano's top of the line freshwater spinning rod. At that time they were labeling their rods by what type of technique it was intended for. Not sp

If I am reading your dimensions properly, it looks like you have a guide 2" from the tip? Or 2.75" from the tip on the Duckett rod? And that each successive guide's location is being measured from the tip as well? If that is the case it means that on 2 of the rods you have 2 guides withing 4" of the tip of the tip of the rod. I would be pretty confident in saying that you wouldn't

I made an interesting discovery over the weekend .... I have an old Shimano Scabbard spinning rod that I have been wanting to redo. It has a painted blank, so I figured I'd give the ideas put forth in this thread, a try. To make a long story short, the Citri Strip did a pretty good job, and the edge of a dull razor blade and a grey 3M Scotch Brite pad do a pretty good job of getting paint off

Phil, and why does hauling a fly line increase the line's speed? Is it because the haul loads the rod more? And if so, why would a loaded rod add speed to the line above and beyond the speed a human hand can move the rod? Edit for addition: I can agree with that Tom. Spinning reels and fly reels do not shoot line.

Phil, in your above scenario of course the fishing rod didn't act like a bow and arrow. Because it isn't one, and your above description didn't describe it as one. Your description was that of a catapult. And catapults work. Need proof? Open a history book and look up the Middle Ages. A catapult shoots a projectile. Fishing rods shoot a projectile. Attach a line to either projectile and the p

Laurent, thank you for the reply, it is very much appreciated. I hope I didn't make it sound as if I thought the Testament blanks may be sub par by quoting part of the Batson e mail I received. That certainly wasn't my intentions. Personally, my focal point of that sentence is that they couldn't get them produced on a large scale. Actually, before I started this thread, I should have put an e mai
