Use contact cement it is much more heat resistant than epoxy. The first reamers I made, way back when, I used and old blank peice that I coated in paste epoxy and rolled in coarse grit. These reamers worked fine as long as I reamed by hand. When I used them in a hand drill all the grit came off because of the heat of friction. Since then used sand paper strips applied with contact cement, no pro

I like to used a diamond fingernail file. It gives you a lot of control and does an excellent job especially on smaller guides including micros. Gives a nice smooth finish that allows your wrap to pack gap free. Norm

Steel rods of various diameters can be used or different sized bolts with the heads cut off work well. These can be fit inside the blank by using masking tape as bushings and glued in place with epoxy. Reinforce the end of the blank wth winding tread and coat it with epoxy. This should give you something that can be chucked into a drill. If you cannot find a steel rod to fit inside the blank bec

Joe- I agree with John the flex coat 36 grit paper is the way to go. You can make a reamer of any length and diameter you want by using various pieces of blanks. I like solid fiberglass just because it holds up very well, but any broken blank pieces can be used (the thicker the wall the better). These reamers can be used by hand or chucked into a hand drill, or a lathe (if you have one). Use co

I received my new 2016 Mudhole catalog yesterday and all the new minima 4 guides were listed. However, they were not present in their on-line site. I assume they will be out very shortly. I am sure if you call mudhole they will tell you exactly when they will be available.

With a 16 I follow with either a 10 or an 8, followed by a 6 or 5, this depends on the action of the rod and reel used; lighter smaller. My preference is 16, 8, & 5 with a 1000 series reel. Runners can be 5, 4, or 3 depending on your preference; i use 4s mostly because like to use leaders. These minima4 M & F set ups cast extremely well and feel very light in the hand. The very first rod

I have recently been using the minima 4 guides based on the good reviews I have read in this forum; and so far have been pleasantly surprised with their performance. For spinning rods I like the minima 4 M guides as stripper and transition guides for the reduction train and the F guides as runners. This is similar to the Fuji KR setup. If you are using mono I would opt for a 25 or 20 stripper us

Phil - never tried that with a rec tip top but do not see why it would not work. Could also use one of rec single ft guides as a tip top. If you have an old fly rod remove the tip top and wrap on the rec tip top minus the tube or a single ft guide and see how it works. Might be pleasantly surprised, if not you can easily cut it off and put the other tip back on the rod. I remember the old Aetna

TheTi-black tip tops are stainless with a Ti-black PVD coating; they match the titanium Ti-black guides but are not titanium. It appears that no company makes a true titanium tip top. Some may have titanium frames (Fuji &SeaGuide) but the tube is always stainless. As Tom mentons above, if you want a titanium tip top you can always wrap on a running guide at the tip. I have done this before in

Did not see solid titanium minima tip tops in the catalog. They have the Ti-black tip tops but they do not have a solid titanium frame. If you like the ZV try the match guides (M) they are even higher and are just as light if not lighter.

Was looking at the 2016 PAC Bay catalog and they will be offering minima 4 guides with a solid titanium frame in a Ti-black color in a number of different frame styles. The minima4 frame models include ZV, SV, M, F, T, & N. Have not yet seen them for sale anywhere. Still no solid titanium minima tip tops. Looking forward to trying these when they become available. Maybe we will see them at th

Checked my stash of old salvage guides this morning and found something similar to what you show. They are old stainless steel Fuji guides with a black shock ring containing aluminum oxide inserts. They have the ring size and Fuji stamped on their feet. I have 2 size 8, a 10, and a 12. They are used but in good usable shape. You can have them if you want them. Hope this helps. Norm

Round-nose pliers will work well for this. I use them to make Alabama rigs & spinners and for a variety of other things that require bending and forming wire. You can buy them online or at any good hobby store.

I have an old original Fuji aluminum oxide fold down size 50 surf guide. You can have it if you want it. Only problem is that the frame is black stainless and the shock ring is green fluorescent. It is in very good (almost new) condition. These were quite common 30+ years ago. If interested send me an E-mail and I can send you a picture of it. I will have to check, but I think I may have some o

Do not have measurements, but Northeast Rod Builders (NERBs) sells Matagi painted PTS seats in gloss black with carbon insert. I think they are the only ones selling these in the US.

Popping rods are traditionally used for throwing and working a popping cork , or a jig when fishing for inshore species such as speckled trout or red fish. However, many freshwater fishermen have found that they make great rods for topwater plugs, jerk baits, jigs and crankbaits. Some will also use them as finese rods. These rods have an extra fast tip which are forgiving but have plenty of bac

How about the MHX P884 popping rod blank. Has an extra fast tip which is softer than a spin/jig blank of similar specs but has a lot of backbone. I have built a number of these; it makes up into a very nice spin or cast rod. Norm

I think the kvd rods use Alps guides, than its an Alps F guide if a size 6 or larger. If it is smaller than a size 6 than it is an Alps mini guide (pmk).

I have found that the original Fuji GPS program, for the new guide concept, not to be very helpful or accurate. As Roger stated above you are better off using the 27x method for placing standard spinning guides. If you want to use a KR spinning guide system the Fuji KR GPS program works very well. For example, if you have a 7' rod with a 9" total rear grip and a 4000 reel with 15 -20 braid,

Michael I am not dismissing the effects that guides have on casting because well placed and properly sized guides make a big difference in rod perfomance. What I am saying is that the microwave casting guides do not offer an advantage when compared to other brands of guides that are well placed and appropriately sized. I know that line coming from a casting reel does show some chaos, but you have

I am not saying that microwave casting guides do not cast well, they just do not offer an advantage over other well placed and sized guides from other manufacturers, including other American tackle guides. Norm

I have done several comparative casting tests using matched rods and reels and have seen very little, if any, advantage using the microwave casting guides. The line guide on the casting reel controls the line immediately as it comes off the spool, so the need to control it at the stripper guide is much less as compared to spinning. On the other hand, the microwave spinning guides do offer a very
