When wrapping in bands, how do u keep the threads from twisting around each other and wrapping in "ropes"? I seem to have this problem when trying to keep tension on just two threads. As I pinch the threads all that twist gets backed up down toward the spools , thread gets all wound around each other and I suppose it's too entangled to flatten out as it passes thru my fingers . How do

I built a batson SUR1508. cut 3" off top and bottom to make it 12' even. It is stiff and fairly fast. By the way you describe it, i think this would work for what you are trying to do.

I am tyring to find one of these. This is an 11'6" fiberglass 1 piece blank, comes in Honey and Black.
I believe it is discontinued, and they only make the lighter 3M version now.
Does anyone know where I might be able to find one? Closeout somewhere? Someone's closet?
They do make a 13"6" version, that is heavy, but I am just not sure I want to cut TWO FEET off a blank. That

Ya know, i gotta say, I complain as much as anyone about shipping costs. Here in Houston, we have a terrific rod building supply store, Fishing Tackle Unlimited. But houston is big. and many of us live 20+ miles away. It's about 20 miles from Galveston too. It has occurred to me that at 20mpg, it takes $6 in gas alone to get there and back. I have to take a toll road, which is another $5 total.

I started not too long ago. The flexcoat startup kit got me started, it cost maybe $150. It has all the epoxy, hand wrapper with thread tensioner, DVD, book, etc etc. . One thing I wish i had purchased early on: the Madeira 30 spool assortment for $98 from Mudhole. This is a real bargain at ~$3 per 1100 yard spool. This is used for the decorative cross wraps on the fore grip or butt section of s

OK, John, Thank you. I did this wrap single thread at a time, and it did not take me that long. I am not in a race! It is 35 degrees outside!
But i understand exactly what you are saying, and I will think about this next wrap. I will also keep my eyes out in pics of other wraps and see if i can see this effect you are talking about at the seams. Thanks. Jim

"You could also go out as far as you want with the wrap and place the first guide on top of the wrap."
Yeah, i sort of thought of this... after the fact. I already laid down and put epoxy onto my underwraps. I have not wrapped the guides though.
The multiaxis wrap is another good way to get more images in that little space. "scales" as suggested by Mark is the leader r

I see where people wrap "background" in bands when doing closed wraps. I'm not sure what constitutes "background" though, for, let's say a spider. Is the background everything on the "box out" plus 1 wrap? Let's say I'm on the 3rd pass on box out plus 1, creating the background that the spider legs sit on top of. would i wrap a single band of 3 threads out on all 4

I am building a shark rod, 40-100lb 7 ft. Not much room for decorative wrap with the long foregrip and 8 guides. I have 119 mm between 1st And 2nd guide wraps. Base circumference at 1st guide is 51 mm and tip is 46. A square wrap would have 2 repeats before tie off? I would rather do a compressed spacing to get more images in that space. Diamond would work of course, but what else ? I never see

OK, I think you are both right. I went back after the CP had dried, and the threads had tightened back up considerably. amazingly, actually. Can't believe how much the CP caused them to loosen. anyway, i checked carefully that the wrap threads were still being anchored by the base wrap. very carefully. They did seem to be. I applied the high build finish, and packed those threads in a little a

I had a disaster happen, and i would like to avoid this in the future, and see if there is a miraculous way to salvage my wrap.
I did an open wrap, with 2 chevrons pointing toward each other on a surf rod above the fore grip. There were 4 of these images where the 2 chevrons met up and were pointed in at each other on the top side of the rod. on the under side, there were two full images, and i

I am going to attempt to wrap a Maltese cross (as described by BD Ehler in his tutorial) on the butt or fore grip area of a surf rod (so it's fairly large diameter). I understand the basic layout and wrapping sequence. What i do not know is how big to make the diamond wrap over the middle "cross" layout thread, and then how big to make the "box" layout thread around the diamon
