One of my goals to my rod building hobby is not only to build very sharp looking eye catching rods but also to build rods that functionally superior to what I can get in a store. One of the biggest complaints that I always have with rods I buy in a store is that they don't balance out very well which makes them uncomfortable to fish all day long. As I have rough build a few rods I realized that

I agree with you guys that there are no shortcuts to learning and by no means am I looking for one, I like the practice and laying down threads. I guess what I meant by tricks and hints are those little things you a have learned along the way that have made a big difference in creating yur layouts or packing threads or what have you that took your wrapping from being either good to really good or

I have been doing a lot of practicing lately on my butt wraps and while I am starting to get things figured out with basic diamonds and chevrons. Not having anyone close to me that I know of to learn from has really steepened the learn curve on doing this and while Billy's book is good I am a firm believer in gathering as much info as possible. I am wondering if you guys would be willing to s

I don't know how well they would work on an open water rod but a product that I use on all my ice rod to hold my reels on is basically a thick "O" ring. It's made by Cold Snap.

Spent a few hours on this last night and it started really making sense and things were going well till I got to m last set of marks. It was at that point I realized that this design on a blank this small is not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced. Can it be done? I am sure it can. Can it be done by me, your dang right.....as soon as I a little better skilled with wraps haha. A big

Billy, I think your book is very clear, I think I just tried to make this way harder than it actually is and instead of stepping back and taking it word for word I was trying to do it all at once and ended up confusing myself (not that its hard to do haha). I will do my best to put up some pictures when I am done.

I have been working on trying a 3d box wrap for the past two weeks and am starting to get increadibly frustrated with it. I can't seem to get past my layout threads without it ending up all screwed up. I have Billy's book and have read it over and over and over again and done search after search on here and just cannot seem to wrap my head around it. Thankfully this is just practice so the only

Jim, That where I am really struggling. I have the picture I want trace on regular paper but transferring it to graph paper is kicking my tail. Everytime I do it it ends up looking like a giant dog turd and not a thing close to what it's suppose too. Is there a secret to doing the block diagram.

I am going to build a rod for my dad and I want to do a weave of his favorite football team. It would be much easier to build the left list using pic to weave but I don't own it nor do I believe it will work on a Mac computer. How does a person go about building a left list for a Multi layer weave without the use of any software.

I don't want to totally high jack this thread but I am planning on doing this wrap for my next one. This wrap calls for a underwrap of a lighter color before doing the chevrons. Do you then mark the cross points on the underwrap?

Russ, Thank you for a thought provoking post. My intent for this post was to gain information, as a very novice builder it is at times very confusing trying to digest all the info, claims and false claims that are out there. I have decided that this build is not going to be happening for awhile for a few reasons: the first being that I will be getting sent overseas in July for awhile so I wil

Roger, Wow thank you for a very thorough response being a complete newbie to this building thing I really appreciate it. It's very hard to swallow spending 100 bucks on a blank considering I have never in my life spent that much on a finished rod. I know that in the long run I will appreciate the better blank.

The 6" is to a huge deal and I can always cut 6" off the butt if its to long I suppose. I will look at the bastons and any others that someone might suggest. This is going to be a slow build a d I plan on making it fit the application perfectly so I am very open to any and all ideas and suggestions

I am planning my next build and I thought I had decided on a blank but today I found out that the MHX blank that I wanted is no longer available. This will be walleye rod for throwing jigs from anywhere from 1/16th to 5/8th at the absolute most and plastics using lines no heavier than 8lbs. I had originally planned on using the MHX High-Mod HM-SJ781-MHX. I would like to stay at the light to u
