ricky,
yes, i went left to right for the underwrap and right to left for the top. all size A thread, silver and green on the bottom and purple on top. i'm thinking the underwrap was too tight or not burnished enough.

ok guys, i thought i was ready to do my first build using a tiger wrap but the practice one i did looks like crap! i think i had too much spool tension when i did the underwrap. i burnished as per doc's video, cp, light build first coat and then a high build. i only used one sacrificial thread on the top wrap and there is NO pattern. is this most likely from the underwrap being too tight or from

roger,
the OD of the trim ring matches the OD of the grip and reel seat nicely. for some reason i ordered two of the trim rings so i still have one with a tenon. maybe i will try adam's suggestion. thanks for the help guys!

64. Re: first build
well, there was a tenon on the ring. i do not have a lathe to turn the eva to make a "mortise" for the tenon to fit in. the tenon would not mate with the reel seat either so i took the ring to my belt sanded and ground off the tenon so now i have a nice adonized "washer".

65. first build
first rod going together and i have a question. i am using a fuji SK2 split reel seat, EVA rear grip and an aluminum trim ring between the rear grip and reel seat. the trim ring ID is MUCH larger than the blank diameter. do i build an arbor for the trim ring, glue the ring to the reel seat, glue the ring to the rear grip or all three?
thanks,
mick

68. fisheyes
i put another coat of finish on last night, when i checked this morning there were a few spots, i guess fisheyes, where it looked like the epoxy "repelled". i was gonna put another coat on anyway; what do i need to do before the final coat? what did i do wrong to cause this? the finish is over pro wrap ncp and metallic if that helps and the wraps were first coated with chromaseal and

thank you guys!! all i have now is pro wrap, and in my limited experience it has been fine, the metallic is a little "springy" and i had trouble with it kinking while running it through the eyes on the thread carriage. phil, i agree that the color selection in the pro wrap kit @#$%&, no black or white even?! i ordered the madiera 30 spool kit to start practicing some of billy's bad a

maybe pro wrap or sulky in copper will meet your needs, sort of orange.

which one do most prefer? these two seem to be the most common (with guidbrod no longer available). i need get some more thread and will order a "kit" with different colors. mudhole sells kits with 40 spools of pro wrap or 30 spools of madeira, each comes with a box to store the spools; does anyone else sell thread in kits like this? all the websites i have seen just sell individual

thanks for the replies! sorry i did not get back sooner, this was a busy weekend! i wear a pair 1.5X cheaters from wal mart for reading, unfortunately, these do not work so well for packing dark thread on a dark blank. i did buy an off-brand opti-visor but i have to get within 6" of the thread before it is focused, that is why i do not love it!

thanks again gents!!
mr. wilson, are you from north carolina? reason i ask; my college roommate's dad was roger wilson, and he was an encyclopedia when it came to wood, wood-working and tools. the man could build anything from wood or sheet metal.

thank you gentlemen for all the replies!!!
i thought i had done enough research but i guess it's back to GOOGLE.
right now i am only planning to turn cork and EVA so i'll probably start with the grizzly or flex coat type. if the bug bites and i want a lathe i'll have something to hold me over until i can find the right one.

78. lathe questions
after the seminars about turning at the EXPO, i have decided that i need a lathe (on a tight budget). i found this on the harbor freight site will it do what i need for turning cork and EVA or should i save some more $ and get a better one down the road?
thanks,
mick

yep, that was me. i'll post pics as soon as i get something done but i don't think i'm in gonna answer many questions about rod building. i've read your book once, will read it again before i start and hopefully this weekend i'll have time to start putting down some thread.

80. thank you
i would like to thank all the vendors and speakers at the Expo. as a new rod builder and first time attendee, i was amazed at not only their ability but also their willingness to help and explain everything to a rookie. i would especially like to thank these gentlemen for their time and advice:

83. new guy question
i have been reading this forum and several other forums preparing for my first build (outside of class). one thing is confusing me; some people say use denatured alcohol for this, others say use isopropyl alcohol, others say use acetone and some say NEVER use acetone building rods. what do the majority of you use and in what way do you use it?
i've spent the last month searching for books and t
