I think what these guys meant to say is that yes, *generally*, the line number printed on a rod describes the power of the rod. There is variation as to what exactly a '3 weight' means, but, that said, you won't find many 3wts that are more powerful than 6wts... or 6wts that are more powerful than 9wts... (simple is good too)

Only in 2pc, Michael. The 7'6" 4wt 5pc RX6, though, would be worth a serious look as that is one of the sweetest lightweight multipiece rods available for under $100.

It's not that much better for those with a lathe, unless you are willing to pay $5 a ring, and even that is a crapshoot

550 on a 10wt? Yikes. 300-350, ok...400 will overload most 10s. I don't know what TFO's response would be if you broke the blank while casting that much weight... #5 is standard for most 10wts, for what that's worth.

Very carefully wet-sanding with 2000 grit paper on a block has worked for me, although I overlay the sanded area with a decal so it hides some of the imperfections.

The Jacobs chucks from Harbor Freight ($9.99) will do fine for holding a 1/4" mandrel.

I don't really try to convince people either way...I do have two 6wts that are set up identically with the exception of the guides, helps demonstrate the differences in feel. But if someone's satisfied with wire guides, that's their choice...would rather have a customer sacrificing a minute potential performance gain and being happy with the rod overall than questioning the rod/guides all day, e

The SigV 9'9" that I was talking about is from his old SigV series...they were 3pc models and stiffer in the lower half than the current 4pc. Great, great rod. You'll have to pry my personal one from my cold dead hands. The new 4pc are more 'finesse'...softer in the mid and butt...kind of like the Scott G series. Real nice trout rods but not what I'd take to the surf. I don't partic

I have had pretty good luck with the standard Batson wire fly guides in chrome and TiCh (not the SS316), just by washing them off after every use in saltwater. I don't know if I'd use the black ones on a surf rod just for the abrasion factor-- the black chrome seems to be less durable than the other finishes. Might also consider #6 SF ceramic guides on that rod, the 1006-4 FT will carry the

LOL, I love it when that happens... the funny thing is, most of the SE MN & SW WI streams are so overpopulated, they need to have a bunch of fish in the 8-14" range taken out of them! 10,000 trout per mile is nice, but not when the average is 6"... I remember getting @#$%& out on Hay Creek in SE MN after whacking a couple of little browns... told the guy to explain to me why culli

The Forecast RX6 7'6" 4wt 5pc (764-5) would be a great rod for you. It's a very smooth, easy to cast little rod with a soft tip and reasonably stiff butt. The 5pc setup is a bonus...I just like the taper for small-stream trout. Match it with a WF4F and you're ready to go. Best part about it is that it'd only run you about $40 for the blank. I don't know what streams you are fishing bu

As yet another rural Oregonian, I am happy to let them have their silly little rodbuilding show as long as they stay away from our 365 days a year of quality fishing. They can have their carp, bass, catfish, snakeheads, whatever... :) That said, I went to the Charlotte show two years ago and it was an excellent setup. Learned a lot and got some great products. Didn't make it last year to ei

Sure, there's no physical reason not to. Now you might get made fun of by the FF purist crowd, but if it holds the reel and looks OK to you, who cares? The Batson / PacBay A5 style uplocking seat with hood is a traditional fly seat but weighs about half of what a comparable REC NS does. I believe it's .70oz vs. around 1.4-1.5oz

Although I am not a huge fan of the lightweight FTs, the 902-4 lined with a WF4F will work for what you described. I fished the 902-4 FT yesterday and was reminded that it's a pretty good overhand casting rod, but pretty atrocious when it comes to rollcasting or other 'detail' work. Went back to my 904-4V and 764-5 Rx6 today :).

Neat setup for sure! I was there in March a couple year ago and got the full behind the scenes tour as I was literally the ONLY person who visited all day. Some great deals in the "outlet store" as well, if I remember right.

What seat are you interested in using? Several of the 2" standard butts can be modified into a 4" or longer version. Cut a piece of scrap blank that fits just over the metal FB screw-in rod...epoxy it on. Ream out your cork rings and place over the blank. Use rubberized cork for the bottom end. Chuck it in a hand drill (or a lathe if you have one) and sand to shape. Not

I fished a couple days ago with a local fly shop owner and highly respected guide. He and I fished the same rod/reel setup (demo rods), a 7'6" prototype I've been working with. CC #s 2.8, 67. We played around with different lines, and I thought the rod fished great with a WF3 or WF4 weight. He liked it with a WF2 or DT1. We both really liked the rod and described the feel in similar ter

I don't know how they make money given their low prices as well as actual cost shipping. But I'm happy with what I've received from them!

Maybe a little off spec but the 9'6" 8wt RX6 is a very nice rod and would match well with a 7wt line.

For the price of one of the high end Renzetti units, you could buy a Amtak/PacBay/Batson wrapper AND a PSI Turncrafter. To me, the ability to have seperate dedicated machines would make this a no-brainer.

The WC 8/9/10 or even 9/10/11 will be a good match. The 1267-4 is a little powerhouse of a rod. I fish mine with a SA Short Head Spey, 56' head and 600 grains. It did not like any heads longer than 65' or so... could lift an Accelerator 7/8 (80' & 560) but it was struggle. I have not fished it with tips but I think it would be fine with the 8/9/10 tips system. I have cast it with a Delta

Dave's description is probably better, I was basing mine off of a couple of quick casts with it at the fly shop as well as the 'typical' A2 profile.

Good blanks, but for $125-150, there are several out there that are better from sponsors of this board (Batson RX8, Dan Craft, etc). If the name brand is important to you, they are a decent deal. Medium-fast action, nice stiff butt section, lots of flex in the mid and tip.

Don't try it with the SCIV, assuming it is the green matte finish. It's extremely fragile finish and no matter what you do, you WILL damage it.

I don' t have the numbers on hand but if I remember correctly it was about a 20% difference. If you use light wire large loops, however, they end up weighing about as much as the standard size loop with regular wire.

Just reread your post and from a casting instructor point of view, you're probably better off starting with a 9'0" 5wt or 6wt rod. Won't be much good for steelhead or salmon fishing but will get you in the right stroke. You could then use the 5/6 for smallmouth, panfish, walleye, etc...

The 9'6" 8wt RX6 is a nice blank and will handle just about any fish you find on the GL tribs. I've sold a couple of them out here in Oregon and they work great for bigger steelhead in bigger water. Can also handle medium-light salmon duty. I'd go with a #16 (at minimum) stripping guide, maybe even a #20. Ice is a problem on a lot of the winter days and a larger guide means longer time

Andy- I haven't called and haven't emailed in the past few days. And...as has become awfully typical in the rodbuilding industry lately, no response. This situation simply must be rectified immediately. When it comes right down to it, what I would really appreciate is more proactive customer service on your part. By which-- I mean a daily call to me, followed by a detailed presentation of

Hmm...looks like some good local advice there. The 907-4 FT might be a good one for you then (it's really more of an 8/9 wt, and I've caught some pretty gnarly fish with mine).
