Tony, I build fishing rods from components and if I say I am a custom rod builder I will offend, outrage or spark controversy. Therefore I will say that I assemble fishing rods from all types of components and when completed are different from factory rods and are totally functional. I do it for several reasons, 1) I am obsesed with Large mouth bass fishing 2) I like to fish with the

My guess is they developed the guide which was swaged on one side and named it minima 3. The natural course is to improve the product so both sides were swaged and was called minima 4. They may change the ring material and call it a minima 5. Who knows where it will end, but it always goes in the right direction. Consumer response will determine which type wins.

The ring on the minima 4 is double swaged (both sides). The ring on the minima 3 is single swaged (one dide).

I use PLIOBOND (contact cement) for stacking and bonding cork rings. I use a thin coat, stack the cork rings on a teflon rod and clamp for best results. For bonding the cork to the blank I use Loctite 0151, 2 part epoxy, but any 2 part epoxy should be acceptable.

I was trying to use the Fuji guide spacing program to set up the guides for a Shimano Stradic 2500. The results indicate the first guide should be 9.96 inches from the spool face and the running guides to be 4 or 5 mm. I think that the first guide is too cloce to the spool. When I watched the video it looks like the first guide is more than 10 inches and the guides look larger than 4 or 5 mm. Di

WOW! Rod or Pole never thought about it before, whenever I heard fishing rod or fishing pole I thought of fishing equipment. To me a fishing rod is built to accept a reel and have guides. A fishing pole is a long cylinder with a line attached to it. Now you guys have me wondering. I will have to move this higher on my courious priority list. I will place it up with why superman stand

How long is the seam leak? Yes aluminum can be welded. I used J-B weld to seal leaks around the rivits on my boat. Reguardless what adhesive or sealant you use you MUST properly prepare the surface. John

May be the guides are being wrapped too loose. The wrapps should be snug enough that the guide takes a some effort to move when making the final alignment. Addition of color preserative usually adds more stiffiness to guide. Guides prepared this way should be able to withstand some minor abuse and stay in alignment, But as Bill stated, be like a carpenter and check three times before adding the f

Could it be possible if the winding check is "overstretched" during installation it can produce stress cracks over time as the tension is relieved. I think if the winding check is just barely a snug fit, the cracking issue may not be a problem. John

915. Re: spine
I guess it all depends on who the King is. At one time if you did not build along the spine you were a heretic. I build on the straight axis and have not been hit by lightning yet. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Linus Cutting material off the butt end has less of an effect on the characteristics of the blank than cutting material from the tip. Cuting 6 inches off the butt of a 7 foot blank will not make a quantun leap change in the handeling of the blank. I would not hesitate to cut the blank and remake the rod. If you are still worried take Bills' advice and test the blank before you cut it. Jo

Dan I do it all the time. I cut back the tip enough (usually 1/4 to 1/2 inch) to clean up the factory termination. Sometimes I cut the tip back to get a better fit for the tip, sometimes to clean up blemishes. Cutting back the tip is no big thing. YES cutting some off the tip can effect the action, BUT in my opinion cutting off 1 to 2 inches of the tip is not significant it's like trying t

Here is my worm's eye opinion. The dictionary lists custom as "Made to personal order" ,"doing work only on order". When we assemble a rod from components to the specification of the user or buyer it then becomes a custom rod. Even if a buyer wants a number of rods assembled to the same specifications all those rods by definition are custom rods. I believe that o

For a CSV4CG20 and CSV4CG06 MIIMA 4 guide. The 20 and the 06 refer to the guide size in milimeters. Is this the measurement of the inside of the ring or the outside of the frame ring. I could not find any info. Anyone know? Thanks John

Jack You can turn off the dryer after 3 hours and the finish will not sag. However, you must be very careful not to touch or bump the finish until it is cured. Depending on the finish used, cure times range from 12 to 24 hours. john

Roger Depending how much epoxy you have, it would be worth mixing a small batch to see if it cures. I have used 2 part epoxy that was 10 years old without any problems. John

The minima 4 guides have a SS304 ring instead of a ceramic ring. I don't see a problem with the guides but the tip has me concerned. How will SS304 stand up against braided lines. Anyone have any experience with this. Thanks John

In my opinion, the blank will never know that the lenght of the butt has been reduced. Most blanks flex from tip to 2/3 down to the butt. From the point where the blank starts to flex to the tip the action does not change, the rest of the blank to the butt is pretty much dead. The only effect will be the moment arm changes from the tip to where your hand holds the blank becomes shorter. John
