Hi Brad - I'll chime in here not claiming any expertise but have pour a few cores. I used ounces as my unit of measurement, not CCs. Most measuring cups are graduated in oz. I started with 2oz of water then poured that into a dixie cup and made a mark. Made cups for part A and B. Mix them together and pour and at room temperature (72 degrees) that resulted in about a twelve inch core, for

Great, thanks for responding. On my next order I'll probably include carbon sleeves and give them a try. Thinking about tucking the sleeve in the hole, it recently dawned on me about the shape of the grip. All of the photos of fly grips have been full wells rather than cigar or reverse half wells. Last night I experimented with a casting rod fore grip, not thinking about the shape, and tape

"I don't care for the glass/carbon combination sleeves" - T.K. I'm dyin' to know, what is it about the glass/carbon that you don't like? Isn't the 50% carbon 50% fiberglass the recommend material. The material that RMM cover is next to on the Soller site. No doubt I'm confused but curious. Does one of the other fabrics finish at the ends better? I had a chance to do some grips t

I looked at Silver Tip Epoxy also but the data didn't mention any UV protection. If I recall correctly, UV protection was the reason for using 207. I just skinned my first grip this evening and waiting for the Resin Research epoxy to cure. I'd guess this is a new enough concept that we're all in the "wingin' it" mode but why I always have to learn the hard way? Mike

It was suggested to me to look at for C/F sleeves. The web site displays some different weave pattern color combos. Other than looking at the site I don't know anything about them. Maybe they only deal in industrial/large order quantities. On the other hand, I just received my first order from Soller and they were pleasant, informative and prompt to deal with. Maybe even Soller can do the

Eric, it seems that the common reply on this board when asking what size to get is to order the size that you think you need and then get the next size larger and the next size smaller. This way you'll for sure have size you need and build an inventory for your next rods. Are you going to spiral wrap? Don't forget about a double foot six for the bumper. Mike

It sounds like that I'm currently building a similar rod to what Bill Moschler described. Using a 2000 series reel with a 50mm spool. I'm using the Batson VS3 guides, sizes are 25, 12, 10 with SF fly 8's as running guides. It seems to static test well and I stood out in the snow this afternoon test casting and performed OK. My comments/questions are: It sounds like quite a jump going from 2

In the computer world there are several acronyms that immediately come to mind, the first RTFM - Read The Friggin' Manual - and the other is PEBKAC - Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair. A casual observation would reveal that this board doesn't utilize "handles" as identifiers, only first and last names. So it shouldn't be so tough to comply. I'm sure you're all aware, the fl

Just did a quick google, one of the results that came up was from Amazon.com. One reviewer writing about the lathe said he used a Nova 3G chuck. Sounds like it might cost more than the lathe itself. has the Nova 3g for $139. Wood turning and lathes are things that I don't know anything about but with time and money want to explore. Are third party chucks a universal fit on any brand lathe?

Why not have a syringe for every bottle. I buy them at a farm supply store for less than a buck for syringe and needle. I look for the largest gage needle that they have and tell the clerk that I have an elephant in the back yard that needs vaccinated. The blonde's usually believe me. Mike

This is a debate that has no end. You would have to live in a small town of, say, less than 15k -22k in a rural area to see what havoc Wal-Mart does to local retailers. I don't give a damn what Wal-Mart carries, I don't shop there. Period, end of story. Mike

In my limited experience, Andy is very good about calling back but I wish that he had a shopping cart on his web site. He is a wealth of information and dispenses it freely but you don't always need advise when ordering TM or cork. The new site is a big improvement now he just needs to take the next step and add a shopping cart. Mike

I just found a classified ad in the Portland Oregonian newspaper that Lamiglas is having a warehouse sale Saturday December 9th 8:00am to 3:00pm. The ad states over 3,000 rods at 20% to 80% off. I don't know if this includes rod blanks also. I would have called but didn't get home until after normal business hours today. I don't think that I'll make it because I live 4 to 5 hours away but y

I've never been totally satisfied with my quality of photos of guide wraps or, for that matter, the quality of my guide wraps but that's another story. I found this article at a while ago and felt like playing with it this evening. It seemed like all my RB photos had harsh lighting and/or shadows. Some had a distracting background or excessive glare. I'd solve one problem and another problem

Thank you to Raymond Adams for his excellent tutorial on trim bands. The document was written in Portable Document Format or PDF by Adobe. PDF is an almost universal format for document exchange. The Adobe program that converts your word processor doc to PDF is almost three hundred bucks. However, thankfully the folks in the open source movement have created similar programs for free. No thi

Thanks again for all of the input. Yes Eric all failures were close to and parallel to the guide foot of SF guides. The only way that I see the guides were stressed was possibly loose wraps and pressure from catching fish. Rod is stored in a fabric sock and tube. Built it last spring but first started using it a month ago. This evening I've stripped all of the guides off the rod. With onl

Thank you for the comments and ideas. Again, I'm sure it's poor technique and not a defective product(s) but why did things go so wrong this time. One thought about heat, I only flame as a last resort but don't recall if I flamed or not but certainly didn't flame every guide. However, in the mixing process I use syringes to extract TM out of the bottles and heat in the micro for ten seconds to

I've posted two pictures of a problem that I'm currently experiencing. The links are: Pictures are posted in the Miscellaneous section. The rod is 10'6" MH steelhead rod, bumper spiral wrapped. Bottom three guides, including the bumper, are double footed guides and the remainder are single foot. All SF guides were finished with a locking wrap. Threads were coated with Gudebro

Have you looked at paint.net? It's a free open source program created at Washington State University. Full of features and there are some additional plugins available. Photoshop is high dollar and overkill for this application. Go to to download the program. Mike

I haven't tried it yet but it was suggested to me to replace the running line with RIO's Slick Shooter. I just looked at RIO's web site and couldn't find it. Did a google and some shops show it in inventory. RIO is showing a Powerflex Core Shooting LIne probably same product with different marketing. I'm guessing that your wanting to replace the running line with mono for more reel capacity a

Spring projects, Bill? It's the first week of January. We've had rain, freezing rain and snow lately. Luckily today here in North Central Oregon it's nice enough for a short walk and I'll probably take down the Christmas lights. That's OK though, we'll brag in July when it's 85 degrees and 30% humidity. Temperature in the 70's does sound good, currently our temp is 38 slightly over cast.

Sounds correct, Jason. Tape or rubberband your bumper in place and run the line through the guides. The line should touch the bottom (the side with the guide foot) of the guide. There shouldn't be any stress on the bumper. It only acts as a spacer or as the name implies "bumper" to keep line from rubbing against the blank. Mike

I asked the same question a while back about guides for the same blank and got these responses . This rod is bumper wrapped but I used 12 & 10 BLNAG and finished with BLAG 8 for the rest of the guides. Tip top BFAT. The friend who received the rod has been impressed with it's performance. This thread has kind of stuck with me about not needing to progressively step down running guides

Robert, I have the Sony 5 mega pixel disc camera like Puter and has worked well. It's a couple of years old now, depending on your personal preference and by todays standard it's rather large. I've used the macro feature for close-ups as well as for fishing trip and family function photos. Great camera. We just bought my wife a Kodak Easyshare Z730. I know, Kodak sounds so old school but t

OK, you've built and set the grip and reel seat with great care, concentrated on making the thread wraps perfect, laid the epoxy silky smooth. What is the your last step before presenting the rod to the customer? What or how do you buff/polish the rod to glisten in the light? I don't build rods for profit but I want the rods that I build for friends to reflect the love and care that I put

I purchased some syringes at a hobby store that specializes in models and trains. Each syringe came with two ends. One is plastic that you cut depending on the size of opening that you want and the other is metal. I wouldn't called it a needle but it's that shape. I hadn't been using the "needle" and just sticking the plastic attachment into the jar. It's kind of messy but has work

I've started experimenting with Mettler Polysheen when I wanted a more brilliant white thread. I have since purchased more colors and have been very happy with the way that it packs tightly, accepts CP and epoxy. To this point I've only used it on a practice blank but will wrap a rod with it soon. I'm pretty sure that Polysheen is a relatively new product but a search of All Dates of Mettl
