Thank for all of your feedback. I didn't apply what I've read about poly Sulky/Maderia over to metallics but makes sense as both kinds are to be used in a sewing machine. I didn't know that it would require four feet of thread to "neutralize" the silicone, thanks for that one Mark. I probably would have used four inches.
All is well now. I've stripped off the lumpy under wrap, CP

Tom, I knew the poly thread was treated but I guess hadn't given any thought to metallics. Won't make that mistake again.

Last night I laid a metallic under wrap on one guide repair job then applied epoxy and went to bed. This morning it was a lumpy mess. The thread was Sulky. I know it's been asked many times about CP and metallics. The common answer is no you don't need CP for color retention but it helps to eliminate bubbles. That answer is probably correct for dedicated brands such as Gudebrod or ProWrap.

Bill, thanks for the suggestions.
Tom, now you mention it, I do recall that article. I'll refer to my library. Thanks.

36. Factory CF Tubes
I was able to obtain some factory CF tubes at a very good price. I knew at the time of purchase they were prone to chipping with rough handling. I'm thinking of scuffing the surface and spraying with Spar Urethane. Another thought was a light coat of FG resin sanded smooth then a coat of Urethane. Before doing any experimenting I wanted to ask about other ideas. Not sure my PG or Lumiseal sk

Brian and John, what do you think of the unsanded look? I have an opportunity to buy some but wasn't sure of the looks.

I'd reconsider my brand of rod holder first. The hottest holder in the Pacific Northwest is Folbe brand. You do the Google. It's a clam shell design rather than slide in/out.

Thank you for the ideas. The owner is an older fellow who doesn't fish much anymore, so we'll see if he wants to do anything.

I have a Harrington rod in for a guide repair and notice that it has quite a bend in the first three or four feet, apparently, from improper storage. Is there a way to straighten the rod? The rod has some sentimental value to the owner, his Dad had it custom built years ago.

Google paint.net. Full featured, good online support and free.

I'd be interested in some larger cores, too. I've noticed in the past that Mike, I think, uses rubber molds rather than PVC so they not exactly concentric with the hole.

Don't forget the epoxy ramp. Everyone can be a different size, shape an color. All it takes is Rod Bond, thread and epoxy.

You might generically explain the problem and I'd bet that someone will have a solution if possible. If it's crystallized epoxy you can microwave it to a liquid form.

How does this move affect the long term nature of the Expo? It seems that each year you're apprehensive about the following year. I will be a newly minted retiree in 2014 and had plans for the Expo to be a retirement gift to myself.

Darn it, still too far to commute. Billy is doing some neat things in New York, at least we're in the state. Northeast Oregon to Southwest Oregon is a big trip.
If anyone is reasonably close they should jump on it.
Thanks for the offer.

I was hoping this thread would generate more discussion before it slips to the bottom of the page. I have a friend who wants an 11' foot rod to roll cast sinking lines to steelhead. I have yet looked up the article that TK referred to tho.

That's a great write up Mike, and the photos really sealed the deal. Thank you.

I installed 9.5 inch Tour Star grip that I received from Lance and I like them. It went on a walleye rod, haven't used it yet but will shortly.
To feel the lightest micro bite, wouldn't that signal be felt through the exposed reel primarily and not so much through the grip?

Thanks Tom, someone had mentioned that here prior to the Expo and that got me thinking. I was hoping that a retail sponsor had them so I didn't have to pay $10 S&H for one $3 item. Thinking, again (dangerous) was it mentioned that he had foam cores too at the Expo? That would be enough to combine S&H. I'll send him an email.

Do any of our sponsors carry the small 1/4 pint paint cans for PG or Lumiseal? They are available online but you have to purchase by the case. I have searched locally at hobby and craft stores with no luck.

Josh, the utmost advise that I could give you is to call Carol at Utmost Enterprises. They have a warehouse full of closeouts and discontinued blanks. I wish they had them cataloged or databased so we knew what's in stock but you won't be disappointed by making the call.

56. Rod Repair
Has anyone been able to track their rod repair success ratio? I've repaired a few rods, fished them a time or two and caught fish then gave the rods away to a kid or needy person. So when it's all said and done I really have no way to track the long term success ratio to see if the fix lasts.
The reason I'm asking is that our local tackle shop has given me some broken warranty rods to repair

I was just at our local tackle shop and they just recently accepted on consignment a dozen "custom" made rods. The makers marketing gig was spiral wrapped rods except the butt guide was placed at 90 the next was 120 (about 3 - 4 inches from the 90) then 180. I realize it doesn't really matter how you get down to 180 but this was a configuration the I hadn't seen before.
They were g

Thanks for your feedback. I'm getting into the decorative wraps in a big way. I'm learning something new with every wrap but it seems that I cut more off than those that get to the finished stage. Thanks.
