Do most of you CP on decorative wraps while the end tape is still on? I'm thinking the CP will hold everything in place when cutting off the tape, trimming threads and putting on the end wraps.

I noticed Jelinek Cork Group, are you working with them to become a sponsor? The corkstore dot com site shows "Cork Ring Super Quality" .88-1.11 per ring. If I don't buy some first, I'd like to hear reports from the show of their quality.

I've found some shotgun shell brass with "Made in USA" stamped on the end. Western tack and saddle shops have conchos of various sizes that are quit decorative. These would be recessed in cork like the button or coin ideas, previously mentioned, covered with casting resin.

I too followed the link and it seems to me that your only problem is the guy that you see in the mirror. I see two things that you need to do at this point, man-up Buckwheat and write a sincere apology and then learn how to use the search engines to follow the links and investigate. You're right about one thing though, you need some professional legal advise for "libelous claims" be

Okay thank you. Actually the first try I flood coated and the thread stretched/overlapped and looked ugly. Second coat I babied with dabbs of CP and same results. Must be not enough tension. At least I'm getting lots of practice and getting faster at laying the bands, just need find the right tension. Thanks for the help.

I've just had two do over wraps because of applying CP. Just starting play with decorative wraps and doing a simple diamond. I'm happy with the lay out and how the threads are packed to form a ribbon look. When applying the CP it seems that some of the threads pop out. I'm applying drops of CP with a bodkin so not to flood coat. I'm guessing it has to do with improper tension. Any ideas?

Funny, on a personal level, I was just wondering the other day what Andy was doing. Strange that he wouldn't be in the industry. Never met him but talked with him on the phone. I gathered that Andy never had short phone conversations. After a couple of minutes he was warm and charming and felt like you were talking to your new best friend. I'm sure he'll be successful at whatever path he

Don't be too hard on the offender. He is a famous book author, popular magazine author, prolific rod building forum contributor and an all around asset when someone needs help. Hint, hint. I went back and reread the previous post and maybe misunderstood. It appears that wide signature messages don't wrap properly and scroll beyond the edges making a wide message on my screen. However, m

I'm using red for my base wrap (the wrap that binds down the decorative wrap) but some of the darker threads show through. Should I/can I lay down a second layer? I've practiced some decorative wraps but haven't finished them off but this one is for real. Thanks

Thank you for all of your input. This man killer rod is way outside the parameters of all of my previous builds so I wanted to be sure I had all of my bases covered. BTW, this rod is for a coworker/friend who said the rod was previously custom wrapped, I just didn't realize how custom! The grips were pipe insulation duct taped on. The reel seat is a good one. The guides were wrapped with w

I'm refurbing an eleven foot one piece fiberglass rod that will be used for sturgeon fishing from the bank on the Columbia River in Oregon. I don't know the make or model. They usually to cast eight to ten ounces of lead and distance is a premium. A Diawa casting reel will be used and I want to spiral. No shock leaders or knots will pass through guides. I'm thinking this setup compares to

I have several CRSD reel seats to install that I haven't done before. Do you commonly glue them up off rod then glue on to the arbor as one piece? Or glue up all pieces on the rod? I'd guess the answer is it doesn't matter but was hoping someone would offer some insight on what has worked well for them. Thanks for your help. Mike

I'd say considering the investment of travel from MN to OR go with a guide and use his equipment. Besides that fishing from a boat will be much more productive - BIG river. Maybe even find a guide who will do combo trips of salmon/steelhead/sturgeon. If your dad insists on a self guided trip go to to study and ask questions about Columbia River bank fishing. Ifish.net is probably one of the

Probably most any craft store will carry the needles needed. I found Wright's #13 needle 2 in a package for about $1.50. The bag needle mentioned in the article probably isn't widely available in the states. I went to a farm/ag store asking for a bag needle thinking it was used for field sewing bags of wool, potatoes or onions (crops that are common in our area) but they sent me to the craft s

Thank you for bringing my attention to Riley Rods and the fact they have foam and c/f sleaves. To answer Justin's question Google sollar composites for sleaves and US composites. Neither of these companies are board sponsors which why I'm happy to see Riley Rods carry these type of products. However I do have a couple of questions for Mike Pedersen. First question is about the foam and w

I agree with Justin Keithly and paint.net. It's free with lots of support. Do a google on "paint.net tutorial". Another open source Photoshop compatible is GIMP, again lots of tuts.

For the last several years I've been a volunteer webmaster for a non profit organization. Due to an upcoming building/expansion project, the Director wanted to increase exposure to the web site. The down side of this is that it has limited my rod building time since Christmas, but anyway I want to share some tools and ideas with rod builders that have web sites. OK you have a web site but is

Definitely some kind of plastic pipe. Recently sent some rods UPS and had a chance to talk to the folks at our local terminal. They said fishing rods are one of their main problems because of their slender length and conveyor belts that they travel on at the major hubs. When the rod encounters a curve in conveyor then sticks out and catches a support then next comes a large package then someth

I can't complain with size A NCP white with CP (Chromaseal) on a dark blank without under paint. Burnish/pack threads tight. Maybe size D presents other problems that someone else can address.

I don't think the color changes at all. Black is black, period. I've been using Chromaseal and it seems to coat the thread to give it a continuous "tape" look rather than seeing each individual thread. Some like that look others don't. Chromaseal when applied to black doesn't leave any white flakey residue as others do.

No doubt that they are flawless. I have a few grips under my belt now and trying to improve from functional (darn nice) to flawless. I've noticed that the spar in a can is getting expensive (8 bucks). I'm getting 2 or 3 14" grips and fore grips per can. A quart can is about 12 dollars +/-. What would you think of air brushing spar on. Here's a link that says you can thin spar with m

Thanks for the replies. I've used the Lamar rings and using those as an example, MH grips would be a tad heavier too. Not really a problem in our application. It look like they'd be easy to work with and add a little character with the burl strips. Thanks again.

I just noticed the Mudhole Exotic Burl Cork block. . Is this a composite material or actual burl cork? From the color combos I'd guess composite. Most of our fishing is done from a boat with the rod in a holder, the composite would hold up well while the actual burl wouldn't. Correct me if I'm wrong. There's no reference to it being a Lamar product, too bad. They do have some nice ph
